While the Tropical Vinyasa studio just opened in September, founder Amy Dannheim and teacher Paul Toliuszis have been favorites amongst Miami yogis for some time. It's no wonder that this studio is getting so much buzz.I had the opportunity to join Jake Ferree (who recently joined the crew from Los Angeles) for their signature one-hour Pineapple Express class one Friday afternoon at 12pm (other top classes include ‘Tropical Flow’ and the weekly ‘Yoga Church’).

Despite the class being held during the middle of the day, the room was completely packed with focused students, which speaks volumes about both teacher and studio. Jake's class was a perfect blend of challenging asana, a little bit of sweat, upbeat music and teacher-generated zeal.

The airy atmosphere at Tropical Vinyasa adds to the experience. A stroll down an artsy Sunset Harbor alley (with a Juice Lab next door!) led me to this beautiful studio, which lends itself to uplifting flow and beats. The space itself is light and minimalist with a hint of sunny cheerfulness that happens to match the teacher's energy to a T.Practice at Tropical Vinyasa is a must for locals and visitors alike. They also offer workshops and a 200 hr. yoga teacher training for the yogi looking to deepen their practice. Find out more and view their schedule at: http://www.tropicalvinyasa.com/.

Whether you are a hard-core yogi or just getting started and looking for a spot to zen out and power up, Anuttara Yoga Deerfield + Delray Beach is the place for you.Classes are held all day everyday with both heated and unheated yoga options – including a vinyasa barre (highly recommended).I have been taking classes at Anattura Yoga off and on for years and can say that the instructors never disappoint. Most recently, I had the pleasure of taking Cliff’s 4:30PM class Anuttara Vinyasa on Sunday, and I tell ya, that hour and a half was work work work, all the way through.Cliff is the real deal; his Sanskrit is on point and technique is even better!“No Shavasana before the final Shavasana,” Cliff tells one student as he lies on his yoga mat trying to recoup. – love it!This class was a hot vinyasa. Oh, yes- sweat on my friends. What I enjoy most about the heated classes at Anuttara Yoga is that they know how to heat it up without making the room a humid steamy mess.

The studio is massive. Two yoga rooms are more like yoga halls, and the entire “studio” is really a yogi sanctuary where they also have a yoga teacher training course. Most recently, they’ve added the Ahisma cafe with a floor to ceiling bookshelf vegan offerings and kombucha on tap to cool down with after class.Make sure you get to class early, bring extra towels and hydrate. You won’t want to miss a minute of anything Anuttara Yoga has to offer.New client special. RESET Cryotherapy believes in the physical and emotional benefits of Whole Body Cryotherapy and are passionate about their clients' wellbeing.
I spent the morning with RESET Cryotherapy owners Whitney Oakes and Jess Scott, who are like nuclear physicists you'd want to go drinking with! Not only did they provide me with a mind-blowingly detailed account of the origins and theory behind Whole Body Cryotherapy (WBC), BUT they also made freezing fun! And we 305'ers know that's a rather arduous task! The term "cryotherapy" comes from the Greek cryo meaning cold and therapy meaning cure. But at RESET, is a bit more complicated than simply slapping an ice pack on a swollen ankle or soaking an aching body in an ice cube-filled tub!Developed in Japan in the 1970s, WBC first came to the US in 2009. Clients strip down to their skivvies - or birthday suits depending on one's inhibition level - and step into a chamber called a 'Cryosauna' (so deceptive - don't be fooled)! For 2-3 minutes, you're engulfed from the neck downward in gasiform nitrogen that is several hundred degrees fahrenheit BELOW zero... so basically colder than the coldest temperature recorded on Earth...EVER!What happens in those 2-3 minutes?Scientifically, the extreme cold causes your body to go through vasoconstriction (blood vessel reduction or tightening) until you exit the chamber and your body goes through vasodilation (the opening or expanding of blood vessels).Emotionally, your brain's regulatory functions are saying "FML!" And this is exactly what Reset Cryotherapy wants ... for you to Feel Better, Move Better, Look Better!... oh, you thought I meant ... well yah, that too!The methodology is based on the belief that the cold provides an analgesic or numbing effect, and that the speed at which nerves fire is slowed. From there, blood flowing through arteries and veins is constricted, leading to a reduction of inflammation (amongst many other reported benefits we'll get to shortly).https://www.instagram.com/p/BP01zh0jAVd/?taken-by=resetfmlFor those like me who are worried about the possibility of freezing to death (admit it, the thought crossed your mind too); I've been assured that you're only lowering your skin's surface temperature. So while thoughts of getting hypothermia in Miami do conjure up utmost irony, your core body temperature, tissues, muscles and organs aren't 'actually' freezing. The experience feels lightning fast as Whitney and Jess play your favorite tunes and encourage you to move and dance around. You also feel super calm because you've been fully briefed on what to expect not just during the freeze, but in the minutes, hours and days after you've frozen! Now for those doing their due diligence, you may have come across articles where skepticism is high, particularly because Cryotherapy is not FDA approved. For me personally, this is far from a red-flag. (I spent 10 years living in London and always found it incredible that tons of funky chemicals - viewed as nothing short of toxins in Europe - find their way into American supermarkets thanks to the FDA's approval).Whitney and Jess offered the below comment when asked about Cryotherapy's FDA status in the US:
"More research on Whole Body Cryotherapy in the United States absolutely needs to be done. There is a lot of research out of Europe. Research on Cryotherapy is interesting, because you can't do a double blind study; if you're receiving the cryotherapy treatment, you would know! It's not like taking a pill where one would be a placebo and the other would be the actual medicine. People have been using various cold therapy modalities for thousands of years; it's a well known principle that cold reduces inflammation. We are excited for more research to be done on Whole Body Cryotherapy in the United States; and if that leads to FDA approval, awesome! And if not, we are confident that most people who do use whole body cryo and see the benefits will continue to do so with or without the FDA approval."
We also spoke heavily about safety, as there was a widely publicised incident in 2015 whereby a Cryotherapy employee in Nevada passed away from nitrogen asphyxiation."This was a very unfortunate happening and we are confident that had safety protocols been in place and enforced, the outcome would have been different," says RESET's owners who were only too happy to tell me about their Juka Cryosauna and how they specifically selected it for its reliability and safety features. They noted that an operator must operate the machine while someone is receiving a treatment, so clients, as well as employees and owners cannot operate the machine themselves. There is no lock on the door to the cryosauna and the flow of nitrogen is immediately haulted upon opening the door. Inside of the sauna is an elevator, so regardless of one's height, their entire face can be elevated above the flow of nitrogen and exposed to oxygen.https://www.instagram.com/p/BPibjvvDLLp/?taken-by=resetfmlWhitney and Jess also highlighted 3 different air detection mechanisms; (1) an oxygen sensor at the height of clients' mouths, so if, for some reason, the nitrogen rises and limits one's oxygen, the operator is immediately aware and the session will end, (2) the JUKA machine's ventilation system which acts like a constant vacuum, sucking nitrogen away from the face and (3) an oxygen sensor that continuously monitors the oxygen level in the facility whereby the release of 100% fresh air is triggered in the event that nitrogen is approaching an unsafe level in the facility.RESET Cryotherapy truly believes in the physical and emotional benefits of WBC and are passionate about their clients' wellbeing and experience. They are wholeheartedly excited to be a part of the Miami community and to facilitate the process of clients embarking on a new adventure with widely reported benefits! So relax, strip off your clothes and freeze your way to ....

The first of 77 locations nationwide in Miami, CKO Kickboxing Brickell delivers an action packed workout that is sure to leave you sweaty.
I got to visit one of Brickell's newest sweat zones- CKO Kickboxing Miami. The first of 77 locations nationwide in Miami, CKO Kickboxing Brickell delivers an action packed workout that is sure to leave you sweaty. Their website explains that participants use real gloves and heavy bags with basic punches to keep the focus on fitness and classes open for all levels.I've done kickboxing a couple of times before at different places, but no one took the time to show me anything before class. It was more of a "here are your gloves- have a great class" kind of experience. When I got to CKO Kickboxing Brickell, they sized me for gloves and one of the instructors (Rodney) took about 15 minutes to go over the different punches, kicks and terms that I would hear in class. Awesome, right? When it was time for class to start the instructor made sure to introduce himself (my instructor was Sebastian) and we all warmed up with a few minutes of jumping rope. Next we eased into our workout with some light punching. We started doing a combination of punches and body weight moves. Then the fun started. We did a combination of punches for a few intervals, and separately, punches and kicks. Sebastian demonstrated everything and took time to walk around the class and make modifications to help everyone move properly. The "round" was topped of with an "attack" where you go at the bag with whatever you want for a short period of time while the instructors encourage you. Whew! Talk about an intense few seconds!
Afterwards we got resistance bands and did a creative and challenging circuit of resistance training. Just when I thought my muscles couldn't do another rep it was back to the bag! This time the class took turns using the battle ropes while working on angles with the bag to help better simulate an actual fight. We did a few more combos of punches and another attack before taking it to the floor for some core work. Once everything was said and done we were lead through some stretches before our workout was complete.Final thoughts on the whole experience? It was awesome. I had fun, I was challenged and at the end of the hour I felt like I had gotten a great workout in- and even gotten some aggression out with all the punching and kicking. A couple of key takeaways:
Sign up for your free class at CKO Kickboxing Brickell here, and go have fun. Ask questions if you have them. Maybe I will even see you at the bag beside of you!Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ckomiami/

As your first class at Fierce Fit Miami is completely FREE you have nothing to lose by giving it a try - you won’t be disappointed.
My favorite types of gyms are those with vast empty spaces. It’s the infinite possibility of dynamic, intense and creative workouts that can be made and changed in these very spaces, on a daily basis that I find most thrilling.Fierce Fit Miami is my kind of gym. Despite its minimalistic appearance, the workouts will have you training at maximum capacity!Owner, Michelle Bertran, has created high energy training programs that combine elements of high intensity interval training (HIIT), metabolic conditioning, boot camp and plyometric training. These one-hour, full body workouts, change everyday so you continue to challenge yourself! To break it down, Fierce Fit Miami focuses on helping you do effective workouts using your own bodyweight. I really encourage anyone looking at incorporating a new workout regime into their lives to start with being able to manage their own bodyweight first. The session I tackled was a 30-minute circuit, broken down into 5-minute intervals. Every 5 minutes I had 3 exercises to do repeatedly, for example; 15 overhead lunges, 10 burpees and a 30 second plank. 10 burpees may sound very manageable but it’s a different story when you’re doing them for 5 minutes!
Bodyweight workouts help you build and gain functional strength, flexibility and endurance. It’s a very good way of getting fit and is excellent for all levels as exercises can be easily modified for anyone.Michelle has a varied cliental that don’t have age, preference or experience in common, but they do all share the same workout space and are ALL seeing the results!During your 1-hour session, in addition to a dynamic warm up, cool down and a killer workout (which I absolutely loved and hated simultaneously), you can count on encouragement and support from Michelle who does NOT stop cheering for you!According to a study published in Psychology of Sport and Exercise, an important factor that was found to create long-term health and fitness success is having a good support system. A lot of people overlook this factor when seeking out new gyms but it can really elevate your workout. If that isn’t enough, devoted owner Michelle gives her number out to clients just incase they need any guidance outside of the gym. As an example, clients will message her in the grocery store when they are looking for healthy food options.I’m sure we can all relate to occasions where we’ve planned to go to a gym class but something crops up and we don’t end up prioritizing a workout.Well, Fierce Fit Miami has a clever app that you can download free of charge. The app allows you to pay, check-in and create a schedule for the sessions you want to attend each week. This is an effective tool for holding members accountable to their schedules. This strategy will definitely make you think twice before cancelling a session at Fierce Fit Miami because Michelle will follow up with your absence! As your first class at Fierce Fit Miami is completely FREE you have nothing to lose by giving it a try - you won’t be disappointed. Once you consider signing up I would suggest the “Boot Camp” package for $100 a month which includes unlimited monthly classes. If you could manage 12 sessions a month, the equivalent of 3 sessions a week you would be paying $8.30 a session and that’s fantastic value for money! For more information, visit http://www.fiercefitmiami.com/.
JetSet Pilates has created a high-intensity, cardio workout that is sure to give even the fittest fitness enthusiasts a run for their money!
Type 'Joseph Pilates' into Google and you'll find side-by-side photographs of its creator at ages 57 and 82. Astoundingly, though a quarter of a century has passed between the two photos, Pilates' incredibly toned body looks virtually identical! #FountainOfYouth!?! Let's start with a bit of background to understand what the Pilates method is all about and how he seemingly managed to defy age... because we want IN!Pilates - A (Very) Brief HistoryJoseph Pilates was a rather sickly child, suffering from a plethora of ailments. He believed that the modern lifestyle, coupled with poor posture and inefficient breathing, lay at the roots of his malaise. He couldn't find what he considered to be a suitable solution to improving his health and fitness, so decided to take matters into his own hands.Pilates created a series of exercises that focused on breathing awareness and the strengthening of deep torso abdominal muscles. He believed that improvement in these two areas would help keep the body balanced, while simultaneously providing support to the spine and improving its alignment and flexibility. He also conceptualised and built various pieces of equipment to effectively practice, and ultimately teach, his method.
JetSet PilatesFast forward a few decades and welcome JetSet Pilates, who have built upon their namesake's traditional methods and created a high-intensity, cardio workout that is sure to give even the fittest fitness enthusiasts a run for their money! The classes center around JetSet's souped-up version of the traditional Pilates Reformer. In a nutshell, there's a carriage that moves back and forth along tracks within a frame. The resistance is provided by the exerciser's body weight and by a set of springs attached to both the moving carriage and a stationary platform. The difficulty level is dependent upon spring tension (or lack thereof) which varies from exercise to exercise. Classes are broken up into segments, some as short as 30 seconds and others well over a minute long. During these intervals the exerciser fatigues a particular muscle by pulling, pushing, holding, pulsing or squeezing, often to the point of physical shaking! (I've been assured "shaking is good!")But what sets JetSet Pilates apart from other reformer studios? Well, A LOT! The pace is rigorous, the difficulty level is incredibly high and they have an elite team of experienced instructors guiding and motivating clients throughout the entire class. Oh, and let's not forget to mention some seriously booming tunes that will reverberate throughout your entire body!
While JetSet's instructors may seem like drill sergeants in leggings, this is not a boot-camp class where you have to worry about the destruction of your joints. JetSet's classes feel incredibly safe for the body, as their traditions are rooted in improving health and fitness and rehabilitating injuries or weaknesses. In fact, prior to the start of each class clients are asked if they have any injuries or concerns so that modifications can be provided. For those who want an added challenge, check out instructor Elisa Miller's focused "Abs and Arms" class. It is quite possibly the hardest and most effective way to sculpt and tone those areas and she is one kick-ass, talented instructor!Make no mistake; JetSet's classes aren't for you if you're looking to chant meditating "omms," spend precious class time stretching or have instructors call frequent water breaks. You'll leave JetSet's 50-minute classes feeling exhausted, exhilarated and desperate for a shower! It's hard AF!! ... but as the adage goes, 'Sweat like a pig to look like a fox!'For more info on JetSet Pilates, visit www.jetsetpilates.com. JetSet Pilates as locations in Coral Gables, Miami Beach (SoFi), Miami Beach (Sunset), North Miami and Wynwood.
A new year provides an excellent opportunity for a fresh start. Exercise is often included in our resolutions, yet many of us find ourselves lacking motivation after a few short weeks or months. The key is to break up the monotony and to find something you actually enjoy doing. If you've never tried stand up paddle-boarding (SUP), it is a welcomed change from staring at a gym wall and gliding (seemingly forever) on an elliptical. Unlike surfing, you'll be able to stand up pretty much right away, making it accessible to novices. Not only does SUP work virtually every major muscle group in your body (core and legs for stability and your arms, shoulders and back through paddling), it also allows you to disconnect from your phone and switch off. Remember, exercise isn't just about the body, it's about the mind too! There are two great Paddle Board Spots in Miami - SoSUP on Key Biscayne and MiamiBeachPaddleboard on South Beach.Miami Beach PaddleboardMiami Beach Paddleboard offers a "Neon Tour" at sunset which is nothing short of EPIC! Boards are equipped with LED lights that illuminate 5 feet under water and 15 feet around the board, allowing you to see fish below and ensuring you don't lose sight of others once the sun sets. You'll be paddling through Sunset Islands channels where you can scope out some uber-lux homes, and hey, let's face it, we're all a bit nosy!A group tour tends to set a more rigorous pace and your body will certainly feel it the following morning! Groups also provide a fantastic opportunity to meet like-minded people with similar interests. For more info, visit: www.miamibeachpaddleboard.com[caption id="attachment_1563" align="alignnone" width="1000"]
SoSUP Key Biscayne[/caption]SoSUPIf you're after tranquility, SoSUP is the place for you. Here you can take out a board without an instructor. But don't worry if it's your first time, the staff will happily provide a brief tutorial so you know which way the paddle faces! You can go at your own pace, taking in the breathtaking turquoise water and white sandy beaches. The water is normally fairly calm and if you're lucky you may spot a manatee or dolphin in the distance. It's a nice solo activity if you need a bit of R&R, or go with a friend and chat while rowing side-by-side; it certainly beats catching up at a sidewalk cafe with cars whizzing by!For more info, visit: www.sosupkeybiscayne.comSo grab a swimsuit and get paddling!
WaterBiking Studio has all the makings of a normal indoor cycling class, except for the added twist of the bikes being submerged underwater.
Located in the heart of Coral Gables, WaterBiking Studio offers a unique experience where body and mind connect in a fun and hyped environment. WaterBiking Studio has all the makings of a normal indoor cycling class, except for the added twist of the bikes being submerged underwater.Read: Where to Spin in the 305 in 2017The temperature-regulated pool is warm and inviting enough for you to jump right in, yet cool enough to keep you fresh and chilled. Next come the biking shoes which are available for rent ($2), and just as you hop on the submerged bike, the lights flick off and the music starts blasting! Before you know it you’re working your quads, calves and butt in a way that your body has never experienced before.
Apart from the leg workout you’re definitely going to feel, this water cycling class works your arms and core, as the instructors switch between different exercises that combine Pilates and ab work. The ad-on benefit is that because you’re under water, the movements are more gentle, making it easier for your joints and giving you the feeling that you´re not tired at all. Don’t be fooled – you can burn up to 500 calories in a 45-minute class! And because you’re under water, the lack of sweat (more like the perception), makes it easier to push as hard as you want through the whole session. This class is recommended for anyone and everyone. You can book in advance, or if you’re lucky you may be able to squeeze in as a walk-in, but don't take your chances, as bikes are limited. Just make sure to bring a spare change of dry clothes, a towel and toiletries in case you want to shower. WaterBiking Studio is truly a unique experience that leaves you with a great post-workout feeling, but also with an amazing vibe!More details at http://www.waterbikingstudio.com/.

Whether you’re competing with yourself or with others in class, the TechPacks on every bike help you track your resistance, RPMs, and the work your putting out in every class. Opt in to the TorqBoard, to see where you rank in class and live stats. Your stats are stored after each class, so you can work towards tangible goals and new personal bests.
SoulCycleSoulCycle is another big name in the indoor cycling world and one of the OGs of spin classes as we know them today. High cardio and focused on fat-burning, these classes are like a cross between a dance party with pumping music and a spa with candles burning as you ride. Riders pedal to the beat of the music and choreography and hand weights are used to target your core and arms.
This is place you go for a full immersion experience. Want to ride the streets of Miami without having to worry about sharing the road with cars? This is the place for you. VirtuRide is a unique concept in that bikes are placed in front of giant screen, where custom ride videos are projected as you ride. Bikes are on a platform that moves with topography of the “road” as you ride. Fans make it feel like the wind is blowing in your face and the resistance changes (you can also manually adjust it) as you ride up and down bridges and hills in the ride videos. Videos combine not just the video of the street, but are also combined with fun music videos that keep your energy up and a smile on your face. Heart rate monitors link up with the leader board in front of class and to an app on your phone so you can see the calories you’ve burned and your heart rate.
WynWheelsLocated within the same studio space as Crossfit Wynwood, WynWheels is a boutique indoor cycling studio with a tight-knit family feel. The studio has just 15 bikes, and because of this, instructors are able to give students more one-on-one attention. High-energy music and motivational instructors get you in the zone and sweating in no time. This studio prides itself on being a “no-frills” type of studio and on being one of the most affordable studios in town.
Speed HouseSpeedhouse is a brand new, state-of-the-art smart indoor cycling studio located in the heart of Downtown Miami. This is another studio that is great for people who get motivated by a little competition. Live leader boards show real time stats and riders can track their results and improvement overtime.

The striking river view provides a unique backdrop and continuous fresh breeze that is both uplifting and inspiring, keeping you moving during a workout.
Tucked quietly away on the Miami River sits Ferrino Sports Fitness Club, the site of my latest assignment. Originally from Recife, Brazil, Eduardo Ferrino grew up an athlete in Track and Field, Olympic Weight Lifting, Muay Thai and was a World Champion Shot Putter.Ferrino chose the South River location in 2014, because he wanted a unique space that fit his vision away from the usual corporate gym concept. Mission accomplished.
This beautiful airy space enables clientele to connect with nature and get away from the city atmosphere. The striking river view provides a unique backdrop and continuous fresh breeze that is both uplifting and inspiring, keeping you moving during a workout. If the space looks familiar, it's because you may have spotted it during an episode of Ballers, with Miami's own, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson.Driving to the facility was an adventure in itself. Passing the historic shipyards, buildings and cargo ships sailing through the river, I finally found Ferrino Sports Fitness Club, where I met Kate Hastings, trainer and group fitness class leader.Clients are offered comprehensive tests, advised to take blood tests and are trained carefully from the foundation up. Aside from the group fitness class, the facility boasts an Olympic Weightlifting area, 65-yard artificial turf, boxing and Muay-Thai area and a massage/chiropractic room.
But I was there for their daily bootcamp class, Ferrino’s Fit Camp. Kate’s coaching technique was encouraging and enthusiastic. She kept us moving the whole time putting us through various drills. Her focus for us in class was to set reachable goals, to stay inspired and develop strength & agility through functional movements. It’s important for her to encourage everyone participating in the class to act as a team and create a flowing energy.Ferrino Sports Fitness Club is open Mon thru Sat with Ferrino’s Fit Camp offered Monday - Thursday at 7:00pm and Saturday at 10:00am. Aventura welcomes RedBike Studios, the new high-end indoor cycling studio that has taken Brickell by storm.
South Florida’s coveted indoor cycling studio, RedBike, is scheduled to open its second location this January.
