Salt Miami Wellness is set to open October 14 in North Miami Beach, offering South Florida residents a home for an important part of any health and wellness routines. There are three rooms – adult, VIP and children’s – that have 20,000 lbs of Himalayan salt between them.

Salt Miami Wellness

The owner, Anna Scasa, opened Salt Miami Wellness as a means to bring a widely practiced and accepted health regimen from her home country, Russia, to South Florida. She says salt therapy has endless benefits for the general population, those with chronic and long-term illnesses and athletes. An athlete herself (CrossFit specifically) she has always incorporated salt therapy in her routine as it helps her maintain endurance and lung function while working out. Some of the things Salt Therapy can help with:

  1. Lung function & capacity
  2. Skincare, exfoliation
  3. Common cold
  4. Allergies
  5. Sleeping
  6. Ear infections
  7. COPD, bronchitis and other lung issues
  8. Muscle soreness
  9. Post-surgery recovery

“Salt Therapy is something that should be added to everyone’s health regimen, similar to working out or eating healthy,” says Scasa. "Multiple sessions help to build up salt in your system over time. Each session is 45 minutes and is equivalent to going to the beach for 3 days. Most customers dose off and end up staying for two sessions or 90 minutes.”Athletes are encouraged to go for a 45-minute Salt Therapy session followed by a 45-minute Infrared Sauna session to achieve maximum benefits and wellness.

Planet Fitness Inks Lease in Little Havana

Planet Fitness is coming to East Little Havana. The New Hampshire-based gym franchise inked a 14,800-square-foot lease at 775 Southwest 8th Street, which was previously home to a Walgreens site. The gym tenant plans to convert the building into a workout facility.Arnaldo Cantero III, a principal at BGRS Commercial Real Estate Advisory, represented the landlord, Robert Wollberg, who is listed as the trustee of the Ortega Jr. Children’s Trust. Records show the trust paid $1.8 million for the site in 2001.Planet Fitness is currently in the permitting process, Cantero said. The gym signed a long-term lease at the site, which spans a little more than an acre. Nearby are attractions such as Azucar Ice Cream Company and the Ball & Chain nightclub.Walgreens moved to a newly built facility just across the street. “It’s very hard to get a retail location in ‘Calle Ocho’ this big because land values are so expensive,” Cantero said. The area is hot with boutique multifamily construction, which will likely bring more residents into the neighborhood, he added.Health clubs and gyms that were often overlooked in previous years by landlords flush with other options are emerging as favorable tenants amid the nationwide retail slump. Other rapidly growing health club chains in South Florida include Orangetheory and Club Pilates.*This article was originally published by The Real Deal here.

It's National Relaxation Day - Here's How to Observe It

August 15 is National Relaxation Day and we are here for it! The STAY FIT 305 community goes so hard day after day to achieve fitness goals and the successful ones will tell you that rest, recovery and relaxation need to be a part of your regimen. We caught up with Dr. Elizabeth Trattner, Acupuncturist, Chinese & Integrative Medicine Expert based here in the 305 and asked her "how does one relax?" Here's what she had to say:

  1. Get Outdoors - Plenty of us are outside getting in a bike ride or a run, but there's a way to incorporate the outdoors into your recovery and relaxation as well."Plan a day trip somewhere outdoors you know with bad cell phone reception, or take all apps off your phone and restore them after the trip," says Dr. Trattner. "In 2010, Dr. Todd Braver, a neuroscientist and neuropsychologist at Washington University, went into nature with four other colleagues to understand how the brain is overtaxed by heavy use of technology. These scientists found that being outside in nature can refresh the brain and also increase attention and focus."
  2. Acupuncture - Acupuncture may seem intimidating with all those needles, but the benefits are endless, including improving moving, relieving pain, improving sleep and more. Dr. Trattner says, "acupuncture is performed using very fine needles, which are appropriately applied to promote healing. Deficiencies are tonified and excesses will be dispersed and reduced. Energy, or Qi, flows up and down the meridians or pathways. Sometimes the energy is blocked, deficient, excessive or unbalanced. This puts the body out of balance and in turn, causes illness. Acupuncture restores homeostasis and encourages healing."
  3. Salt Soak - From salt baths to salt lamps, salt is very trendy right now, but there's many reasons why. Dr. Trattner says, "the beach is an incredible place to relax. The combination of nature and salt water has a positive effect on the mind and body. If you can’t make it to the beach, I highly recommend soaking in salt baths."
  4. Keep a Journal - We're always running our bodies through the ringer, so why not work on mental fitness?"Journaling is a way to engage the creative spirit within you and get out what is called 'free flowing anxiety,'" says Dr. Trattner. "You do not need to be a world class writer to journal. In fact, I keep a picture journal instead. Keeping a journal helps free your mind. You can write, use imagery and if you’re really talented keep many thoughts in your journal. I use this type of journaling to channel what is deep in my subconscious mind."
  5. Swim - Swimming is not only one of the best workouts you can do, but it's yet another way to relax. Dr. Trattner says, "swimming in the ocean is harder than a traditional swimming pool, as there are currents and waves that make you use your abdominal muscles (and all your muscles) even more. The ocean is the very best meditative place you could possibly be on National Relaxation Day. Saltwater induces relaxation, resets your physiology, regulates stress hormones, increases concentration and reduces tension."

5 Workout Braids Anyone Can Do

Going to one of our STAY FIT 305 events means two things: 1) you're going to SWEAT... hard. And 2) you're going to leave with your hair braided by Elle Air Beauty Bar. We want you to enjoy those fly ass workout braids any time you want so we worked with Elle Air to put together 5 easy braids you can do at home before your workout, guaranteeing you're looking good while you're working out.A few tips before getting started...

  1. Use dry shampoo before your workout so it's working while you're working! It'll absorb sweat and oil as your hair releases it vs. trying to fix it after your workout. Pick one up for $5 at your local pharmacy.
  2. Use small elastic bands instead of the traditional pony holder - clear for Blondes, black for Brunettes, colorful to jazz it up!
  3. Every time you finish a braid, lightly pull it apart as you go down so it looks extra voluminous

Now onto the braids, done by Elle Air stylist Shannon Atily, (@inthenameof_hair):

  1. Dutch Braids
  1. Part your hair from the crown of your head, between your eyebrows, to the base of your neck - this will create two even sections of hair on the left and right sides of your head. Section one off with an elastic band. With the other section, start at the top by grabbing a small section of hair toward the front of your part and part that into three. Start to braid, left section under the middle, right section under the middle, and grab a finger’s width worth of hair each time you braid sections under each other. Fasten on end with elastic. Repeat on other side. Braiding under is what gives you that raised braid look - and what makes it Dutch vs. French!
  2. Fit Space Buns
  1. Part your hair from the crown of your head, between your eyebrows, to the base of your neck - this will create two even sections of hair on the left and right sides of your head. Secure on section with an elastic. With other section, part from the top middle part to the top of your hair each ear to section off the front piece. Start at the top by grabbing a small section of hair toward the front of your part and part that into three. Start to braid, left section over the middle, right section over the middle, and grab a finger’s width worth of hair each time you braid sections over each other. Braid to the top, back of your head. Grab bottom section of unbraided hair and bring up to the braided hair to create a bun. Repeat with other section.
  2. Quick Crown Dutch Braid
  1. Part your hair from the crown of your head, between your eyebrows, to the base of your neck - this will create two even sections of hair on the left and right sides of your head. Section one off with an elastic band. With the other, starting at the ear, section into 3 sections and braid the left over the middle, the right over the middle, down to the bottom. Secure with elastic band and repeat on other side. This will be two simple braids toward the back of your head. Take one braid and flip it out and up to fasten at the top, middle of your head with a bobby pin, being sure to run the bobby pin through the elastic to make it more secure. Repeat with other side.
  2. Lazy French Braid
  1. Brush hair back, away from the forehead and face. Part top and bottom evenly into two sections. Secure bottom with elastic. With top section, part into two sections vertically, and tie as you would a knot - this makes the braid secure at the top. Untie bottom of hair and part separately into three sections. With the top left section, grab the bottom left section and pull over the bottom middle section. Repeat the same process on the right side. Braid down to the bottom and secure with elastic band.
  2. Half Up, Half Down

Part your hair from the crown of your head, between your eyebrows, to the back top of your head. Part both sides to the top of the each ear to section off the front pieces. Brush front part back, away from the face. After your ear, part section into three and braid the “legs” of that section of hair to the bottom. Fasten braid with a small elastic band. Repeat on other side. Cross two braids in the back and secure with another elastic band or a bobby pin.You can get your hair braided by Elle Air at any time, starting at $25. They also are a full-service hair salon, offering color, cut, blow outs and more. Elle Air is located at 9480 Harding Avenue, Surfside, FL 33154.

David Grutman is Transforming the South Beach Firestone Into a Food and Beverage Complex

There seems to be no stopping David Grutman and his hospitality group, Groot Hospitality. It was announced that the club and restaurant mogul is going to debut three new food and beverage spots where the former Firestone on South Beach used to reside at 1569 Alton Road, along with a retail concept. The spaces will debut in fall of 2019 according to representatives, but no other details have been revealed.

This isn’t the first announced food and beverage plan for the space. Roughly two years ago, another big player in the South Florida hospitality world, Menin Hospitality, announced plans for an all-day diner in the space. Those plans have since fallen through.

And this unnamed spot is just the latest addition to the Groot Hospitality portfolio that includes OTL, Planta, Komodo, and the upcoming Swan and Bar Bevy with Pharrell Williams, along with nightclubs Story and LIV. Stay tuned for more developments.

Meatless Monday/Always? Check Out These 5 Vegan Spots in Miami

Whether it's just another Meatless Monday, a committed vegan lifestyle or something you've been thinking about trying, going/being vegan can be a challenge when it comes to eating out. Worry not, we get it, and we're here to help. We've put together a list of our Top Miami Vegan Spots:

  1. The vShops - Did you know the world's first vegan food hall is located right here in South Florida? Nestled in Coconut Grove, the Miami Vegan Food Hall features some top vegan regulars like Choices Cafe, but also includes pizza at Next Generation Pizza, sweet treats at Ice Dream Parlor and healthy, organic smoothies at Neo's Blender. They also just announced the latest opening - a BBQ joint. Follow along on social or check back online to see this vegan haven grow to ten all vegan spots by the end of the year.
  2. Soul Tavern - This spot in Sunset Harbor has been recommended and approved by locals who weren't particularly looking for a meatless spot. Soul Tavern's menus (brunch, lunch, dinner) were inspired by the Five Elements, an ancient method for balancing the mind, body and spirit, and include items like a Fried Green Tomato Benedict for Sunday brunch or the housemade gnocchi with cherry tomatoes, garlic, basil, chilies, shishito peppers, macadamia nut crema for dinner.
  3. Planta - Planta opened in South Beach this year under Chef David Lee "with the purpose of creating delicious food that promotes environmental sustainability," meaning ingredients are ethically sourced and there is no use of animal products. Serving dinner, sushi, brunch and more, menu items include a "Frenchie" pizza with mushrooms, squash, arugula, cashew mozzarella, almond parmesean and truffle vinaigrette and a tofu scramble with zucchini cream, charred tomatoes, shoots
  4. Full Bloom - Imagine riding your bike across the Venetian Causeway one evening and pulling over halfway through to pop into this joint that arguably has one of the best views in greater Miami to watch the sunset over some delicious food. These 5 Healthy Lunch Spots in Miami Have Multiple Locations

At STAY FIT 305, it’s no secret we love getting our sweat on, but let’s be real - we sweat so we can eat. In Miami, we’re blessed with an array of mouth watering options, from croquetas at Sergios to fried chicken at Yard Bird, it’s easy to indulge for cheat meals on the weekends, but when it come to grabbing a quick, healthy lunch, you should always have a solid list of go-tos around town to keep your body feeling and looking good all summer long.We created this list of healthy eats that have multiple locations so you truly have no excuses. Here are our recommendations:

  1. DIRT - with the tagline “Eat Clean” and a couple locations throughout Miami, DIRT rises to the top of our go-tos. From protein and veggie packed salads and bowls to deliciously topped toasts and flavorful wraps, their menu is diverse and unique. What’s more? They have a menu key that designates which options are vegan, paleo, gluten free, seasonal and spicy, so truly, if you can’t find something here, you’re just too picky of an eater to be going out anyway. DIRT changes their menu seasonally, but my go to is the steak bowl when I have a hankering for a cheesesteak.
  2. Jimmy’z Kitchen - Salads have a bad rap - let’s just admit it. But once you find a really good salad, you can’t help but go back again and again and talk about it like it’s a crush, because not only does it taste good, but you feel good after you eat it. How’s that for hype!? Jimmy’z Kitchen is a solid salad spot! They are sure to impress with their diverse flavor portfolios, with ample amounts of freshly grilled protein on top. My go to is the Jamaican Jerked Salad for when I want a filling salad with a kick. Jimmy’z Kitchen has three locations in Brickell, Wynwood, South Beach.
  3. GreenLife Organic Bistro - The name alone says it all! GreenLife built its menu by using ingredients free of genetically modified organisms, pesticides, hormones, and anything that doesn’t belong in our food much less in our bodies. 90% of GreenLife’s ingredients are organic, seasonal or locally sourced. Proteins are all natural, antibiotic free, hormone free. From acai and pitaya bowls to vegan soups and protein bowls, GreenLife has an expansive menu that’ll speak healthy to you. They have locations in Brickell, South Beach and Coral Gables.
  4. Raw Juce - Sometimes we’re on the go and just need to grab something we know will fill us up without sacrificing nutritional value. This is where the juicing trend comes in handy. Not only does juicing have health benefits like bone health and immune support, but it’s an easy way to pack in nutrients in a quick, drinkable form. Raw Juce offers fresh, diverse, organic, cold-pressed juices, both pre-packaged and made to order in stores. They have locations in Brickell, Coral Gables, Boca Raton, South Beach, Weston, Palm Beach and Miami.
  5. Dr. Smood - “Smart Food for a Good Mood.” What else need we say? Dr. Smood will get you filled up on coffee, juice and nutritious lunch options. Pop by and grab something pre-made out of the fridge or get a table and something made to order. You choose your juice or meal based on your mood - power, beauty, immunity, detox, energy and health. Options include eggplant jerky, wild caught salmon panini, espresso brownie bites and more. They have locations in Brickell, South Miami, Sunset Harbour, Aventura and Wynwood.

This Total Body Workout is Miami Dolphins Cheerleaders Approved

Hey Fins Fans, want to know how the Miami Dolphins Cheerleaders stay fit all year long? Katie Ann Martinez did us a solid by putting together this work-out that you can do, that helps keep her ready for her Game Day duties as a Miami Dolphins Cheerleader.

This particular workout includes cheer/sideline practice, as well as full-body based exercises. Since our time on the field requires the maintenance of stamina and endurance throughout a four-hour game, I incorporated our sideline cheers into our overall workout in order to get the maximum results. Not only are we practicing our dances, we are exercising our memory, we are testing our endurance in the way it will be challenged on game day, and we are making our “workout time” fun and team-oriented!Workout Format:

  • Warm-up
  • Eight stations
  • One minute spent at each station – transition as quickly as possible (no more than 30 seconds)
  • Total – three rounds of completing all eight stations

Example Body-Weight Exercises:On every other station we're usually calling sidelines, but for the purposes of a workout for you guys, any cardio based exercise works here:

  • Station 1: Pop jacks
  • Station 2: Jumping Jacks
  • Station 3: Walk-out to 2 plank jacks
  • Station 4: Jump Squats
  • Station 5: Sit-ups to alternating punches
  • Station 6: Box Jumps
  • Station 7: Reverse Lunges
  • Station 8: Ski Hops

Example Resistance-Training Exercises:This resistance training workout uses a loop band.

  • Station 1: Squat jacks– band around the ankles
  • Station 2: Jumping Jacks
  • Station 3: Lateral Step-outs– band around the ankles
  • Station 4: Plank Jacks
  • Station 5: Arm Step-outs (Push-up position)– band around the wrists
  • Station 6: Step-Ups
  • Station 7: Glute Bridges to Abduction– band above the knees
  • Station 8: Pop Jacks

Workout Extras:

  • My odd number stations will differ – sometimes they’ll be solely body-weight – sometimes they’ll be solely resistance training – sometimes I will combine them.
  • I do not always incorporate sideline cheers – sometimes every station will consist of exercises for whatever muscle group I aim to focus on for that day (examples: upper body, lower body, core work/stability, full-body, etc.)

Cool-Down:

  • After our workout, we smoothly transition to our stretching time. Due to our bodies being warm and appropriately challenged, this gives us the ability to get the most out of our flexibility. It also helps our muscles recover and prepare for the rest of practice.
