Ready to cut your environmental impact and improve your health along the way? Follow these steps to put it into action.
Remember, the planetary health diet emphasizes consuming mostly plant foods and limited amounts of animal proteins, so if you can't fathom giving up your Sunday morning bacon, don't sweat it. "We're not saying you can never eat a cheeseburger again, but the goal is to try to reduce your consumption of red meat to maybe once a week," says KC Wright M.S., R.D.N., a nutritionist and sustainability advocate. And on that note...
Before you try to overhaul your diet, understand that you're not going to have the healthiest, most eco-friendly diet right from the get-go, and slowly making changes is the key to preventing yourself from feeling overwhelmed, says Wright. If you make a chili, swap your meat for a variety of beans, or use mushrooms and lentils in place of ground beef in tacos, suggests Wright. "If, right now, you're consuming meat 12 times a week, then can you get it under 10, then five, then maybe down to three times a week?" she adds. "Know that it's not perfection, but it's practice, and anything is better than nothing.
ICYMI, cattle production is one of the largest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions, and noshing on red meat every day can also have serious health impacts for your personally. Poultry, however, doesn't require as much water, feed, or land to raise, so it's a slightly more eco-friendly choice if you really can't give up meat a couple times a week, says Jessica Fanzo, PHD. "Poultry is also much lower in saturated fat than red meat," adds Wright. "The quality of fat in the skin of poultry is not as saturated as the fat in a hamburger or trimming off a piece of steak. It's high in calories but not necessarily going to clog your arteries."
The planetary health diet also advises eaters to keep seafood consumption minimal, so if you're going to add a helping to your plate, Fanzo suggests checking out online sustainable seafood guides, such as the Monterey Bay Aquarium's Seafood Watch. These guidebooks will tell you the specific seafoods that are caught or farmed responsibly, the amount of waste and chemicals the farms release into the environment, the impact the farms have on natural habitat, and more. "You can also eat lower on the food chain, such as shelled seafoods like mussels and clams," she adds. "These are a more sustainable source of seafood as opposed to large fish."
For the most part, though, you'll want to stick to plant-based sources of protein, such as whole grains, nuts, seeds, beans, and soy foods, says Wright. "As much as possible, I encourage people to consume the whole form, not super-highly processed, smoked barbecue-flavored tempeh, for example," she explains. Those products may contain added sodium, which can increase the risk of developing blood pressure when consumed in high amounts, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Plus, choosing foods that don't have the plastic packaging can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and cut down on the amount of plastic entering landfills, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
Since carbon footprint doesn't always give the full picture of a food's environmental impact, Fanzo recommends thinking about its water footprint (how much water it requires to produce) as well. A single avocado, for example, uses 60 gallons of water to produce, so if you care about water resources, consider cutting back on your avocado toast intake, she suggests. The same goes for water-intensive California almonds, which require 3.2 gallons of H2O per nut.
If you grew up in a "meat and potatoes'' kind of family, figuring out how to concoct delicious plant-focused meals can be a challenge. That's why Fanzo recommends looking to cuisines that are predominantly vegetarian — such as Thai, Ethiopian, and Indian — for recipes that will help you fuel up without requiring you to soul-search for your inner Amanda Cohen right from the get-go. You can also sign up for a plant-based meal delivery service to take out the work while your taste buds get acquainted with the tastes and textures.

The Miami Beach City Commission unanimously adopted a resolution on Wednesday declaring climate change to be caused by “human activity” and pledging to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
“Climate change is a global problem that requires global solutions,” observed Miami Beach City Vice Mayor Michael Góngora, who sponsored the measure. “Our pledge to attain net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 goes a long way to backing up our words with meaningful action.”
The vote coincides with the 2021 Earth Day celebration on April 22. Miami Beach is also developing a Climate Action Plan that that will guide actions that need to be taken to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
“Miami Beach is ground zero for sea level rise,” added Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gelber. “We can’t afford to wait any longer while our city suffers the consequences of decades of inaction with regard to carbon emissions.”
Cities and urban areas like Miami Beach are uniquely positioned to combat climate change because they account for 70% of climate-changing greenhouse gas emissions around the world.
“Action on climate becomes more urgent every passing day,” noted Global Climate Action Manager Niclas Svenningsen with the United Nations.
“All stakeholders need to contribute to the solutions now, but in order to do that, they need to see the leadership and the right policies from national and local authorities to be able to implement an effective response,” Svenningsen explained. “For this reason, we are proud to count Miami Beach as a participant in our Climate Neutral Now initiative. Their commitment sets an example for other authorities and for every stakeholder in their county. We look forward to collaborating in accelerating the transition to the climate neutral, net-zero society that we need by 2050.”
The City of Miami Beach joins City of Miami and Miami-Dade County in pledging to work toward achieving a net-zero emissions target by 2050. Reducing emissions is an essential part of implementing Resilient305, the shared resilience strategy.

Nearly two years after opening in Coconut Grove, Transition Pilates has built quite the reputation as the go-to studio for pre and postnatal Pilates classes. Rachel Scherdin, owner and founder of Transition Pilates, has watched her business grow with new and expecting mothers looking to stay active.

“Being pregnant can be scary,” says Scherdin. “It seems like a giant list of things you cannot do. I love to help women feel safe, challenged, and educated during pre and post natal pilates.”
The boutique atmosphere of Transition Pilates certainly allows for this specialized training to take off. The intimate studio is equipped with five balanced body studio reformers, towers, and Pilates chairs, giving clients the one-on-one attention needed from the instructor, something mothers are looking for when they book a session at Transition Pilates.
“After trying different pre-natal classes, I found Pilates to be the best choice to keep me active during pregnancy,” said Maria Genge of Miami. “Rachel’s classes are amazing. They were the perfect balance of challenge, energy and safety. After classes I would feel reenergized and relaxed which can be hard to find especially in the later months of pregnancy.”
That glowing review of Scherdin’s class is pretty common, who has built an in-demand reputation with clients. Her focus on the core foundations, diaphragmatic breathing, and oblique strength to prevent diastasis recti (abdominal split), has Pilates goers flocking to her studio.
“I worked out with Rachel 2-3 times a week,” said Coral Gables resident, Casie Moore. “Not only did I feel good throughout my pregnancy, but my post C-section recovery was much easier. I also returned to my pre pregnancy weight faster.”
Teaching women about their bodies is part of experience, and why Scherdin says her clients walk away happy.
“I love to educate women about their pelvic floor,” said Scherdin. “Many women don't even know the function of their pelvic floor, where it is, how to relax it, or connect to it. Connecting, relaxing, and lengthening the pelvic floor is vital for an easier pushing phase during birth.”
Transition Pilates is located at 3183 SW 38th CT, Coconut Grove, FL. Parking is available. For more information, about pre and post-natal Pilates classes at Transition Pilates visit www.transitionpilates.com.

Create more space for the things you love to do through The Core Collection by Privé Pilates.
Established in 2021, The Core Collection™ is a collection of expertly designed OnDemand classes to help you awaken your body's natural intelligence, improve your posture, tune into your inner balance, and develop a well designed balanced body.
"A week after the lockdown in March 2020, I decided it was time to pivot and bring my dream of The Core Collection to life," said Alina Sedano, creator, instructor and NCPT. "I wanted to bring the 5 Star movement experience into people's homes. So instead of jumping on the bandwagon of offering zoom & virtual classes, I took my time to carefully craft and develop a collection of classes - designed after my proven method of teaching. My method is proven as I honed my technique while working with doctors, nurses, physical therapists and a sports chiropractic facility; helping injured athletes, seniors, and weekend warriors get back to their game."
Through The Core Collection, participants can escape to a place that inspires your physical and mental space through mindful movement, while creating enduring and positive change - that will serve you and your body for a lifetime. Elevate your movement experience!
Classes are based on the three pillars of health with MOVE WELL designed to improve alignment and create strong & mindful movement patterns, PLAY OFTEN, designed to increase range of motion and boost athletic performance, and SLEEP BETTER, designed to release tension, restore balance and melt away stress. There is something for everyone in the library of workouts, including functional foam rolling classes, restorative sessions, and core workouts, with new classes designed weekly.
Sedano says that her main purpose as an online instructor is to bring the 5 Star Movement Experience that can only be found at the top wellness resorts, into a person's home by offering them a peaceful private space to escape to with high-quality, alignment-based workouts designed to improve posture, strengthen & lengthen the entire body, release tension, and improve overall biomechanics. So they can feel stronger, but most importantly feel younger and be able to enjoy their favorite activities with a child like enthusiasm.
"I want to help everyone feel young again and strive to be the best version of themselves," said Sedano. "The Collection is designed to help you get back in your 'A' Game!"
"I have become so strong and flexible from her training, that I hit a golf ball further now than any time in my life. All because of her ability to strengthen and lengthen my body. I hit the ball further than most younger golfers now in my later years. I wish I had found Alina Sedano 10 years sooner." - Howard Ross, Golfer
"As a beginner, I have absolutely fallen in love with The Core Collection. The online classes feel like I'm doing a virtual private with Alina. She gently reminds you to check your form and alignment, while challenging you to move well. Thanks to Alina... I'm able to wear my favorite Chanel jacket again, after having my baby. The online classes give a busy mom a fun & relaxing moment to recharge." - Susan Merlo
"Alina is the best Pilates instructor out there! She makes the session fly by and keeps things interesting and challenging. Most importantly, her way of helping visualize what your body needs to do in order to use the correct muscles really helps get the most out of the workout. This is by far the most effective Pilates class I’ve ever taken." - Diana Sragowicz

Even the simplest yoga pose can require your brain to go into overdrive: How should you position your hands and feet? Where should you look? What’s the right way to balance?
On Tuesday, Lululemon launches a new yoga mat designed to cut down on these mental calculations and help you better focus on your practice. The $118 mat is covered with a pattern of 3D ripples, each of which has been positioned to guide you through the most common yoga poses. The idea is that users will develop muscle memory about where to position their bodies, rather than looking for visual cues around them.
Lululemon has a long history of catering to the yoga community since it launched more than two decades ago. For this mat, the designers spent two years conducting focus groups with customers and ambassadors, many of whom are top yoga instructors. “We discovered that what people wanted was to feel grounded in their practice,” says Chantelle Murnaghan, director of Whitespace, Lululemon’s in-house innovation and R&D lab. “When we dug into what this meant, it came down to not being distracted, so they could better focus on their practice.”
In their research, they found that yoga practitioners at all levels—even experts—are constantly using visual cues to get into the right poses, whether it’s looking at other people or looking at themselves in the mirror. Stephen Morris, a senior designer at Lululemon who led the design of this mat, wanted to create something that would allow people to find the cues on their mat instead. “We explored what it might be like for someone to simply feel their way through their practice,” Morris says. “Could they just develop the muscle memory to flow through practice without having to look around them?”
There hasn’t been much innovation in the yoga mat market over the last few decades. A few brands have created mats with lines on them, along with instructions about how to use them. But customers told Morris these could be distracting and were sometimes hard to see in a darkened room.
Lululemon took all of this feedback into consideration. They positioned ripples across the mat and used several techniques to decide on their placement. They looked at customers’ old, well-worn yoga mats to see where the indentations were, since these spots were clearly heavily used. And they polled yogis about the most challenging poses to master, which turned out to be downward dog, side angle, warrior II, and warrior III.
In the end, Morris’s team created a pattern of 3D ripples on the mat that can be used in a wide range of poses. “The ripples are meant to be gestural, not prescriptive,” Morris says. “And importantly, you can feel out where the ripples are, so you don’t need to search for them.”
The point of the mat is not to overthink the ripples. Users should just practice as they normally would, and over time they’ll find that their hands and feet naturally feel more comfortable in specific circles. The idea is that eventually this positioning will become second nature.
The mat comes out of a broader design philosophy at Lululemon called “the science of feel,” which looks at how people feel while they’re active, instead of focusing on the action itself. This can be tricky, since feelings are subjective, and there tends to be a range of responses to a particular activity. With clothes, for instance, they’ve found that some consumers enjoy the feeling of sweat, while others hate it; some women like feeling movement in their sports bras, while others like feeling compressed.
With this mat, Morris wanted to create room for diversity and variation. “A person’s yoga practice is so personal,” says Morris. “This mat is designed to support a wide range of experiences.”

They were born in far-flung cities all over the world, from Moscow to Furtwangen, Germany to Harrisburg, Pa. to Osaka, Japan. But they – or in most cases, their families -- wound up uprooting their lives to move to South Florida in search of year-round tennis weather, better coaching and competition, hard and clay courts, and an ever-growing number of tennis academies famous for turning junior prospects into pro players.
In the Miami Open women’s draw, seven of the top 30 players have South Florida ties, along with No. 36 Coco Gauff and No. 49 Sloane Stephens among the top 50.
The only one of the nine who was born in the area was Stephens, who was born in Plantation. The rest came as young girls, including Naomi Osaka, and sisters Serena and Venus Williams, who honed their skills on courts all over Broward and Palm Beach Counties.
On the men’s side, 13 Miami Open players have Florida homes and/or train in the state. Among them are Ryan Opelka, Frances Tiafoe, Sebastian Korda, Kei Nishikori, Kevin Anderson, and Mackenzie McDonald. John Isner, the 2018 Miami Open winner, trained at Tampa’s Saddlebrook Academy after leaving the University of Georgia.
The state’s reputation as a tennis mecca dates to the early 1970s, when Jimmy Evert started his tennis academy at Holiday Park in Hollywood, nine miles northeast of Hard Rock Stadium, where the Miami Open is being held this week through April 4.
At one point, Evert had seven players at Wimbledon, including his daughter Chris, who was a U.S. Open semifinalist at 16 and went on to become a legend. The Evert Academy eventually moved to Boca Raton and has been a training ground for many top American players. Both the 2021 Australian Open women’s finalists – Osaka and Jennifer Brady – spent time at the Evert Academy, as did Madison Keys, Taylor Fritz, Christina McHale, Frances Tiafoe, and Alja Tomljanovic.
Osaka, the world No. 2 and reigning U.S. Open and Australian Open champion, was asked on Friday whether growing up in South Florida helped her deal with the heat during her third-round win over her Croatian-born Australian opponent Tomljanovic.
“Well, interestingly, I remember hitting at Evert and Ajla was also practicing there, so it was funny, today (during the match) I was thinking she’s probably the one person that doesn’t mind the heat like me,” Osaka said. “I feel like my body has been able to adjust to the heat quite well. I actually really like sweating in really hot conditions where you feel like you’re really pushing yourself as an athlete.”
Over the past four decades, dozens of tennis academies sprung up in South Florida and the west coast of Florida. Nick Bollettieri’s famed academy drew future stars such as Andre Agassi, Maria Sharapova, Jim Courier, and current player Kei Nishikori. Saddlebrook Academy near Tampa is where Isner improved his game alongside Mardy Fish and James Blake, who is now the Miami Open tournament director.
“When I finished college, I knew first and foremost I needed to get out of Georgia,” Isner said Sunday. “As much as I didn’t want to leave Athens, I knew I had to make a decision for my career to get down to Tampa and get a little apartment there and just start practicing and training and try and get better at tennis.
“That’s what I did. It was very crucial in my development. I had a lot of great players I was able to practice with, a little bit older than me, James Blake and Mardy Fish. My first-ever coach, who was very instrumental to my career, Craig Boynton, was in Tampa. I realize how much of a huge role that played in the development of my career.”
Other top academies include the Rick Macci Academy in Boca Raton, the International Tennis Academy in Delray Beach and Nick Saviano’s High Performance Tennis Academy in Davie.
Two of the most prestigious junior tournaments are held in Florida – the Orange Bowl in South Florida and the Eddie Herr International in Bradenton. A few years ago, the USTA opened a 64-acre, 100 court national training center in the Orlando suburb of Lake Nona.
Brady, who is ranked No. 14 in the world, trained at the Evert Academy in Boca Raton from age 10 until she left for UCLA and now trains at the USTA site near Orlando. She spent her early childhood in Mechanicsburg, Pa., and the family moved to Boca Raton when she was nine.
“My parents were sick of shoveling snow, wanted a different climate, and also Boca Raton was a great place to start for a young junior tennis player,” Brady said. “It’s a lot more competitive down here. I learned early on that everybody here is ruthless, players will fight and cheat and grind their way through matches just to win, so that was something a little different for me.
“I was a little bit passive, a shy kid, so I kind of let some players walk all over me. But I quickly learned you have to be ruthless in this sport in the juniors.”
Sofia Kenin, ranked No. 4 in the world, moved from Russia to Pembroke Pines as a toddler. She remembers going to watch the Miami Open as a child, and says she benefited from practicing against other top junior players.
“There are a lot of great academies close by, a lot of girls in south Florida, I’m always practicing at Evert, hitting with some girls there and on other local courts,” Kenin said. “It is a huge benefit.”
Amanda Anisimova dreamed of becoming a pro tennis player when she was training at the JCC in Aventura and at Sabiano’s Academy. She is now No. 28 in the world.
“I grew up watching the Miami Open at Key Biscayne, I would go every year as a little kid,” Anisimova said. “I was excited to see Maria (Sharapova), Serena and Roger (Federer). I could only dream of playing in a tournament like that in the future and never really thought that would be possible. To be playing it myself so many years later is really special. Growing up in an environment where tennis is really popular and with so many girls playing at a high level, that made all the difference.”

Peloton and adidas joined forces and launched a new apparel line on Thursday, March 25 motivated by "shared values of well-being, inclusivity and community," according to a joint statement. Designed in partnership with Peloton instructors Robin Arzón, Ally Love and Cody Rigsby, the 11-piece collection marks the start of an ongoing collaboration between the two brands.
The two companies teamed up to "further foster a sense of community and acceptance, while empowering people to be the best version of themselves." With a nod to inclusivity, the apparel sizing extends to 2XL, and the collection also includes unisex pieces.
In an increasingly crowded and noisy fitness apparel sector, this partnership highlights how important it is for brands to be nurturing and engaging their communities. In particular, it shows how collaborations such as these are strategically important for brands wanting to not only offer something unique for their biggest fans, but also extend their reach by partnering with other brands with engaged communities.
Aimee Arana, General Manager, Global Training at adidas alluded to this importance in the joint statement, stating that “we have an incredible opportunity to help grow connected communities and continue to support people as they build their new fitness journeys at home."
In teaming up with Peloton, adidas is tapping into a growing community of at-home fitness enthusiasts. Peloton has shown significant growth during the pandemic, and and now boasts 4.4 million members worldwide.
Peloton and adidas are not the only fitness brands turning their attention to a more size inclusive range. Many other companies such as fitness retailer Athleta and Target's TGT +4.3% in-house fitness brand All In Motion have extended their size ranges and featured a wider diversity of body shapes in their marketing and in-store mannequins. Fitness brand Superfit Hero even extends sizing up to 7X.
When asked about the driving force behind the addition of more inclusive sizing, a Peloton spokesperson, speaking via email, emphasized that both Peloton and adidas have "inclusivity and community at the heart".
"It was inspired by the vibrancy and diversity of the adidas and Peloton global fitness communities" they added.
As Cody Rigsby, Peloton instructor and one of the co-creators of the apparel range said: "We...wanted pieces of this clothing to represent what we stand for. For me, that's not conforming to what "normal" is."
