Years after the ambitious project to develop the area underneath the Miami Metrorail was announced, The Underline has finally opened to the public. Today, The Underline opened the “Brickell Backyard” phase of the planned 10-mile linear park.
Meg Daly, president and CEO of Friends of The Underline, conceived of the public-private partnership after breaking both of her arms in a bicycling accident. Since then, according to the website, The Underline, “has been committed to transforming the underutilized land below Miami’s Metrorail—from the Miami River to Dadeland South Station—into a 10-mile linear park, urban trail and public art destination.
The Brickell Backyard phase is the trail’s northernmost point and encompasses the half-mile area extending from the Miami River to Coral Way, and the first phase to open.
In addition to the clearly marked walk/running path and separate bike path, here is what you can find in the Brickell Backyard of The Underline:
The River Room is the northernmost point of The Underline and connects to the Miami River Greenway at the Miami River and SW 7th Street. The River Room features a rolling topography of native grasses and pollinator plants. The city block will be the place for dogs and their owners to rest and play—right on the riverfront.
Located between SW 7th and 8th Streets, The Urban Gym allows guests to exercise with friends or solo in an outdoor gym complete with a flex court for half-court basketball, mini pitch soccer, fitness equipment, running track, and more.
The Promenade between SW 8th Street and the Brickell Metrorail station features community gathering spaces including a sound stage and plaza for health, wellness, and cultural programs, communal dining table, tables for board games and the Station Grove, a seating area at the Brickell Metrorail station entrance.
Stretching two blocks from the Brickell Metromover station to Coral Way and carved from native oolite rock from Miami’s Rock Ridge, the Oolite Room is nestled in a natural canyon of stone with four butterfly gardens and meditative spaces.

For most college students, it’s often hard to imagine the future when you’re surrounded by a stack of books in the University library half past midnight on a Wednesday. For David Alexander, it was no different. As a kinesiology major, a future in athletic training was the path unknown. But after graduation, Alexander made the decision to take a more corporate path in health and wellness that ultimately was the foundation for his future success.
“Starting out, the corporate path was helpful. You’re provided structure, client leads and resources to succeed,” said Alexander. “But it was a gauntlet that I eventually grew tired of. I knew I wanted my own facility and I knew I wanted to work with athletes.”
This career clarity shortly into his professional journey led Alexander to transition to the business side of fitness, a “personal development milestone” as described by Alexander.
Fast forward a few years, and that’s when the big break came. In 2011, Alexander was introduced to LeBron James while James was living in Miami and playing for the Heat.
“I was introduced to LeBron, Chris Paul and Dwyane Wade, and it reaffirmed my passion for wanting to work with athletes,” Alexander recalls. “I pulled in my business partner Donnie Raimon and we began writing the business plan that eventually turned into DBC Fitness.”
Now, 23 years later from those long hours at the library, DBC Fitness is a powerhouse in the fitness industry, servicing professional athletes from all sports, and local Miamians looking for an elite level of training.
“Our process begins and ends with science,” explains Alexander. “We use biomechanics as the foundation to our training programs so there isn’t any guess work. The human body moves in a certain way and we just take what that science tells us to build fitness programs for our clients.”
This approach has led to booming business for Alexander and Raimon, who alongside a staff of educated and independent trainers, service some of the most recognizable names in sports. But it’s not all about working with athletes at DBC Fitness, and the science and training isn’t exclusive to those high performers.
“65% of our business are general population guests who want to make sure their bodies are being approached the same way as the top athletes,” said Alexander. “One of the best things you can do is build your foundation. Then, you can walk in anywhere and do the workout.”
Now, with a new location in San Diego, DBC Fitness is focused on expansion, and adding to their certification program for fitness professionals. For Alexander and Raimon, the business may grow and evolve, but the science remains. And that means clients can always expect results.

For David Alexander, the goal was to always work with professional athletes. Getting there wasn't easy and took twists and turns.

We are so excited to announce our “25 Miami Fitness Trainers You Need to Follow in 2021” list. Scroll down to see if your favorite trainer made the list below, and check out our lists from the past.
2020 was a tough time for many brick and mortar operations in the Miami fitness scene. We saw some amazing gyms prove their commitment to surviving this year’s fitness rollercoaster surrounding COVID-19.
When we asked our readers to vote for their favorite gyms; the ones that helped them stay committed to their goals in 2020, we couldn’t ignore the strong presence of the Miami Crossfit community.
This year we are pleased to share the Miami Crossfit Affiliates You Need to Try in 2021 list, as we add this category to our yearly roundups.
Adding this list to our roundups was no easy feat. How did we find the Miami Crossfit affiliates we are recommending? Well, we looked at several key factors when visiting different boxes.
When visiting Miami Crossfit affiliates there were a lot of similarities and differences that stood out. For starters, each Crossfit gym or “box,” is affiliated with the training method and brand of Crossfit itself, however each gym is privately owned by a person or group of individuals; hence affiliated. This model allows Crossfit gyms to apply the Crossfit training methodology with their own interpretation, and vision. You can see a map of Miami Crossfit affiliates here.
During our visits, we realized that each Crossfit gym really was its own brand and experience, all while following the training blueprint. This prompted us to dig a little deeper as to what makes a Crossfit gym special, unique, and standout from other affiliates.
Coaching
Crossfit has developed a bad rap through the years, most recently with fitness personality Jillian Michaels who slammed the method publicly on her social media. Some boxes we visited had really stellar coaching. We learned that we could research a gym’s staff to find out if their coaches were Crossfit certified, and beyond. In addition to the Crossfit Level 1, we found many coaches working at the boxes we recommend not only held CF-L1’s but CF L-2, L-3, USAW Weightlifting certifications, Yoga credentials, and more. Crossfit requires their gym owners to also be certified, which we found unique to Crossfit gyms. These certifications set many gyms apart.
Schedule, Convenience, Accessibility
Class schedules and class types varied quite drastically at many of the boxes. We found 24-hour access options, diverse class types, 5:00 AM start times, and open or free gym times available to members. It was cool to learn that the top affiliates had programs for kids, weightlifting, yoga, bootcamp, online options, and more. It was clear the best Miami Crossfit affiliates had evolved through the ever-changing landscape of fitness. Many gyms included parking or were located near public transportation making training easy and accessible. A few offered options for remote programming to athletes who aren’t attending in-person or who are located remotely.
Facilities, Amenities and Environment
Thriving Crossfit boxes have evolved from the warehouse style blueprint, to now feature large outdoor areas, high-end equipment, immense indoor square footage, clean air-conditioned locker or changing rooms, showers, backyards outfitted with pull ups bars, unique spaces, artwork, onsite massage and PT, and even a historic landmark.
Program Format and Workouts
The options at our recommended affiliates were a fit for everyone - from general population, former collegiate athletes, the mom trying to stay fit, the member in need of personal training, and so on. Each gym programs their own workouts and we found programming to be an important factor for members.
Community
In some of the boxes we visited, it was clear to see the community was important to the culture. Some athletes and coaches we spoke to talked about events like the famed Wodapolooza (a large Crossfit sanctioned event in Bayfront Park which happens annually returning in 2022), the Crossfit Open, or gym specific group workouts, social events, beach workouts, and other gatherings. Many gyms we visited are involved in their local communities, fundraising for causes or gym members.
So, with that being said, here is our list of Miami Crossfit affiliates you need to try in 2021 (in no particular order).
Founded in 2008, this Kendall gym bares the title of oldest Miami Crossfit affiliate on their website. We loved the kick boxing and yoga options this facility offered along with options for kids. It’s a great gym for the entire family, and many of the members we met trained with their families. Give Crossfit Threshold a visit when you’re down south.
Peak 360 is owned by a former Crossfit Games athlete and it shows. This facility makes you want to work hard from the moment you set foot into their newly renovated space. Peak 360 is a long-standing icon among local Miami Crossfit athletes, and has a track record of working with other notable ones. They promise to help members get fit in all aspects of the word; physically, mentally, and spiritually - 360 degrees.
This gym had us at hello. When we first visited their website, we were overwhelmed with the sleek feel that soon revealed the many options from nutrition to online programming. Crossfit Soul gave us clear options on what type of programming would work best for us, and frankly every possible scenario. When we finally stopped by this Miami favorite we were ready to run with the team. This gym was the opposite of a one size fits all approach and somehow found the balance between “serious Crossfit,” and making Crossfit approachable to the masses. They proudly and deservedly boast some of Crossfit’s top athletes among their training community. Schedule a trial today and learn more about Crossfit Soul’s training methodology.
This neighborhood gym founded in 2012 is just what the doctor ordered if you’re in the market for a classic Crossfit wod with neighbors and friends. Crossfit Kendall boasts a long history of helping their community and making everyone feel welcome. This gym reminds us of what a Crossfit gym should feel like, with high ceilings and big garage bay doors. Early riser? This box offers a 5:00 AM option, great for those crazy weekday schedules. Don’t forget to take advantage of Crossfit Kendall’s in house nutrition coaching through their staff.
Located in the Ingraham Building in the heart of Downtown, we powered through a tough workout in this box meets landmark space. Downtown Strength & Conditioning or “DTSC” as the members called it, features a hefty class schedule, including various class types, and a focus on their USAW Barbell Club program boasting a USAW certified coaching staff. Walkable or bikeable for most of its membership base, this gym reminds you that Downtown Miami is the perfect mix of vacation feels and a rapidly developing urban utopia. Intense workouts set against some cool artwork, make sure you take a selfie on your way out. Three-day passes are available via their website.
This gym reminded us we were working out in the beautiful Wynwood neighborhood with an impressive outdoor backyard – sort of like an adult playground with weights. Crossfit Wynwood, in addition to traditional Crossfit has their WynFIT program. These HIIT style classes are a great starting point for people new to Crossfit and use lots of body weight movements and various pieces of equipment. Stop by Crossfit Wynwood and get some fun in the sun in their “yard.”
Reebok Crossfit Miami Beach is a true staple among the Crossfit world it would seem. A destination gym located smack in the middle of South Beach, its unrivaled in the area. Reebok CrossFit Miami Beach is on Alton Rd and somehow manages to fit an almost 7,000 square foot facility on Miami Beach. We loved the outdoor concept and proximity to Flamingo Park and the beach. A drop in’s dream, the workout of the day left us sweaty and wanting more. They offer discounts for long term contracts which was a nice perk for those who are ready to commit to their fitness with these fitness pros.
This massive space has the program to match, with 11 types of class options, including kids gymnastics. Their online community is something to write home about and in these COVID times its clear to see that Caution has you covered with online and remote coaching programs. They offer a 7-day trial on their website which makes trying this Miami Lakes gym out easy.
Move Lift Live will have you doing just that. This new(ish) kid on the block in Brickell is built on the principles of movement. Move Lift Live’s community also known as “the village,” isn’t just about lifting weights or getting your heart rate up. The coaches at Move Lift Live believe understanding the bigger picture, and the gritty details are the only way to guarantee and enjoy sustainable health and fitness. The space boasts two sides for different class types, a locker room, and on-site massage and physical therapy. Make sure you catch a yoga class while you’re there or opt for their Pulse class if you feel like something different. Complimentary sessions are offered on their website.
We learned that one of the owners of this Miami Crossfit gym is quite handy and it shows. Crossfit Yellow Falcon includes both a full indoor and outdoor training area complete with outdoor flooring and pull up bars, as well as an indoor area for weightlifting with the team to match. This gym offers training in a geographically desirable space near to multiple neighborhoods including Edgewater, Midtown, Wynwood and Downtown. Due to their well-rounded space, Crossfit Yellow Falcon offers a variety of programs and perks, like free parking and showers if you’re on the go.
Drop-in for the workout of the day at one of these Miami Crossfit affiliates you need to try in 2021.
It’s hard to argue that at this moment, no Mayor in America is working harder to improve the future for its residents than Miami Mayor Francis Suarez. COVID-19 is still a threatening and dangerous presence across the country, and very much here in Miami. But Suarez’s courting of Silicon Valley and the tech industry as a whole, has garnered national attention, and has given Miami a renewed sense of business hope beyond the tourism industry.
That sense of hope continued last week, when Mayor Suarez focused his attention back on the health and wellness of his constituents, and named Life Time Miami Marathon Co-Founder, Frankie Ruiz, “Miami’s Chief Wellness Officer.”
“I’ve never had an official sounding title in the public space other than being an advocate for health and wellness,” said Ruiz. “I am excited to work alongside Mayor Suarez to make Miami’s reputation for health and wellness world-class.”
Back in 2003, Ruiz co-founded the Life Time Miami Marathon, which jump started the South Florida running community. Ten years later, Ruiz and co. lead Run Clubs in South Beach, Brickell, Doral, Weston, Coral Gables, West Kendall, Homestead, and Kendall. In an article last year, STAY FIT 305 named Ruiz one of the five people who forever changed the Miami fitness scene in the last decade.
Sure, the Chief Wellness Officer position might be voluntary, but this is a home run appointment for Suarez. Ruiz is arguably the city’s most recognizable face and name in the wellness community, and can help focus the city on the necessary immediate and long-term improvements that will make a major difference.
"I think I can help with not only my ideas, but getting support and momentum for other people's ideas that impact the health and wellness community," said Ruiz. “Our park system could use some attention. Parks aren't amenities anymore, and shouldn’t be viewed as luxury things cities have to offer. In the world of COVID, well-designed and maintained parks are necessities that cities should be offering their residents.”
Ruiz is spot on with his comments. Miami is known for its beaches and weather, but if Suarez’s plan to attract industry leading companies to move to Miami is going to succeed, then life beyond the sand needs to be just as appealing.
“After COVID, the parks, along with a push for health and wellness, should be a city focus,” said Ruiz. “We need to turn our attention to symptom curing solutions, vs problem-solving ideas. A focus on overall health and wellness can make a major difference in everyone’s lives.”
Miami Mayor Francis Suarez has named Life Time Miami Marathon Co-Founder Frankie Ruiz, the city's Chief Wellness Officer.

Though the COVID-19 vaccine rollout holds out hope for an eventual return to normalcy, the near-term challenges of safely staging live performances remain real.
In December, Miami City Ballet tackled this challenge with its outdoor production of “George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker in the Park” in downtown Doral.
For its 2021 spring season, MCB extends this model further – bringing dance to South Florida neighborhoods with “To Miami, With Love,” a series of pop-up performances set in iconic locations including Lincoln Road, Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, Wynwood, Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, Miami Design District, and The Underline.
Admission to the performances is free, though tickets are required. And all performances adhere to the health and safety measures implemented by each locality or individual business. For those unable to attend in person, the pop-up performances will be freely distributed on MCB’s social media channels beginning the week of March 8.
“As a cultural institution, we wanted to demonstrate our love for this city that really made us who we are,” said MCB artistic director Lourdes Lopez. “When COVID hit, we thought we are not going to let go of our desire to thank this city, instead we will find other ways of doing it.
“And the idea of pop-ups came up. What better way than to go out and dance in all the iconic places this mosaic of the city has to offer?”
MCB and partnered with New World Symphony to perform on Lincoln Road on Jan. 30, as a nod to the historic Miami Beach beginnings of both organizations.
“Before this horrible pandemic, the 35th season of Miami City Ballet was going to be a love letter to Miami, and we still wanted to find a way to give back to the community, give people a chance to take some time to relax,” said Cameron Catazaro, a former MCB school student who joined the company as a Corps member in 2019.
When the pandemic forced the cancellation of MCB’s season, Catazaro quarantined at home in Maryland. During downtime, he began work on “A Lovely Feeling,” a pas de deux set to the plaintive prelude of Giuseppe Verdi’s opera, “La Traviata.”
“It came naturally to me to choreograph,” Catazaro said. “The music we dance to is why I love to dance.Locating the music and then imagining the steps that would work for it was the fun part for me. Seeing the music play out through the dancers is what I really love.”
Verdi’s music especially moved him.
“I would play it during quarantine while doing puzzles,” he said. “Every time it would catch my ear, and I would put the needle back and play it again.”
The pop-up also includes new work by Miami City Ballet Corps dancer and choreographer Julian Goodwin-Ferris.
“For this project, I really spent a lot of time studying the musicality of Balanchine’s ‘Square Dance,’” he said. “Balanchine has such interesting ways of sometimes following Baroque music’s structure.”
His new work, “Realized Inner Voices,” is a two-part pas de trois set to the music of 18th-century composers Georg Philipp Telemann and Jean-Marie Leclair.
“Realized Inner Voices,”one of his first choreographies, was inspired by a visit to Vizcaya Museum andGardens, where his ballet will be performed on Feb. 5.
“Vizcaya feels like a villa you would see in Italy, but it is also a mix of different styles and eras of European history,” he said. “Vizcaya’s mash-up of different European art is, in a way, similar to ballet that is choreographed today. Influences and ideas ften come from the large mix of the choreographers and ballets that came before, but the steps still trace their origin to the Italian court.”

Find out what's happening in your neighborhood this month by using our monthly guides - South Florida Sweat Guide: January 2021.
Your favorite “always on time, can’t use Miami traffic as an excuse because the next class starts in 10 minutes” studio - Sweat440 - is reopening their South Beach (January 2, 2021), Coral Gables (January 9, 2021), and Brickell (January 16, 2021) locations after closing their doors in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
So what has Sweat440 been up to since you’ve last dropped in for one of their popular 40-minute express sweats? Quite a lot actually.
“After our initial closure in mid-March, we launched a daily email campaign that sent In-Home Sweat440 style workouts with videos and instructions to all our members,” said Sweat440 Chief Operating Officer, Matt Miller. “Recently we have taken Sweat440 outdoors with a class series in both South Beach and Doral Yard. These workouts are body weight and band only, instructor led, and socially distanced.”
So what can you expect when the doors reopen? Well first things first. If you’re dropping in to the South Beach location you might want to get there early for your first visit back - they relocated upstairs in the same building.
*RELATED 10 Must-Try HIIT and Bootcamp Workouts in South Florida 2020
“Our address is still 1916 Bay Rd., however we will be taking over the upstairs space which will feature a full studio redesign, new "blue room" lighting system, upgraded bathrooms, and an extra 230 square feet of usable workout space for increased social distancing,” stated Miller. “Additionally, all our studios will now feature a self-check in kiosk system that will be supported by our new proprietary mobile phone application.”
Sweat440 isn't taking any chances when it comes to COVID-19 and has implemented a ton of new changes to their studios to keep them safe and healthy for guests.
If you ask us, that’s pretty thorough. It’s great to see gyms like Sweat440 and others take the responsible approach to the pandemic while still providing their services to members.
“2021 will be a bounce back year for Sweat440 as we look to restart the rapid expansion we had planned before the pandemic hit,” said Miller. “Look for several more Sweat440 studios to open up both in neighboring South Florida communities and across the country. More details to come soon.”
And we’ll have them right here on StayFit305.com

After months of closure, Sweat440 is reopening the doors to three of their South Florida locations - South Beach, Coral Gables, and Brickell - in 2021 under new health and safety guidelines.
