Vertical barriers are expected to be installed on the most hazardous stretches of bike lanes on the Rickenbacker Causeway after a couple was killed while cycling there over the weekend, according to a plan made public by county administrators on Tuesday.
While details aren’t final, Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said her administration plans to install the barriers on stretches of the causeway considered dangerous for cyclists as part of a $250,000 upgrade that she ordered this week.
On Sunday, cyclists Yaudys Vera, 48, and Ogniana Reyes, 46, were killed by a collision with an automobile on the county-run causeway connecting Key Biscayne with Miami, reviving demands by biking-safety advocates for solid dividers between bike lanes and traffic lanes.
“It’s a short-term measure to address certain areas,” Levine Cava said of the barriers the Department of Transportation and Public Works plans to install along Rickenbacker bike lanes. “I don’t know that, in the long term, if that will be the answer.”

If you are looking for a graceful approach to your workouts, try Ballet Flow. The new workout is popping up at locations across Miami Beach this summer, with plans to launch at app soon as well.
Ballet Flow consists of simple, full body conditioning workouts done to a fusion of house music and classic music. The ballet-inspired classes are a balance between low impact exercises, technical ballet movements, and fast-paced combinations. These workouts target and tone lean muscles in legs, glutes, core, and the upper body with grace.
Ballet Flow is a unique approach to fitness and wellness thanks to their artistic approach. Classes require a mat and light 1-4 pound hand weights or bangle weights.
"Ballet Flow workout program/class is developed by what a dancer does on the center of the floor or mat to train, strengthen, and condition their bodies," says Natalia Cordero, Creative Director of Ballet Flow. " It incorporates more muscles and uses the full body to perform the movements. Dancers are looked as regal, graceful and most importantly strong. I want to bring out the dancer in you. Simple movements with beautiful results."
This ballet-inspired workout is popping up at two hotels in Miami Beach. Find it at Hotel Greystone on Monday, June 16 and The Sagamore Hotel South Beach on Monday, June 23. The pop up classes will have a Live DJ and sponsors that include Body Armor and The Mentis Company. A portion of proceeds will be donated to the Lotus House Women's shelter.
These classes are the start of Ballet Flows partnership with both hotels, offering classes every Thursday. Look for Ballet Flow's new app for on-demand workouts and live streaming by the end of the summer.
The drop in rate for classes is $20 for your first time, and $30 for each time after. There is also a special 8-class pack for $128 or a monthly membership for $79.99. For those who attend the June launch events, there will also be a special monthly membership promotion.
The pop up classes will be held at Hotel Greystone, located at 1920 Collins Ave in Miami Beach, and The Sagamore Hotel, located at 1671 Collins Ave in Miami Beach.

The City of Miami Beach and luxury residential development Five Park invite the community to join them for a celebratory ribbon-cutting event. On Wednesday, May 18 at 5 pm, they will be welcoming a sprawling 3-acre resilient park at 600 Alton Road. This important addition is set to transform the South Beach experience and connect neighboring communities in a way that’s never been done before.
“Instead of a massive wall of rental units, we now have this exquisite greenspace in a neighborhood where no one has a backyard,” said City of Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gelber. “This park will quickly become a welcomed amenity for nearby residents and a favorite gathering spot for our entire community.”
As part of the celebration, attendees will have the opportunity to explore all the park has to offer, including an outdoor gym, dog park, public art sculpture by Miami-based artist Mark Handforth and a whimsical playground designed by MONSTRUM. Additionally, guests can marvel at the park’s lush landscaping, canopies of native and exotic trees and hundreds of vibrant orchids planted as part of The One Million Orchid Project in partnership with the National Orchid Garden and Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden. Once visitors have thoroughly explored the amenity, they can enjoy light bites from Bodega, a sweet treat from Santos Churros as well as local, organic dog treats from Bowie Bites for their four-legged friends.
Aside from being a central gathering space, the yet-to-be named park at 600 Alton Rd. addresses a variety of sustainability issues on Miami Beach. With nearly 40 different plant and tree species throughout, the park plays an important environmental role to balance ecosystems, mitigate soil erosion, decrease urban heating effects, provide habitats for threatened animals and protect watersheds from destructive floods with a newly built bioswale.
The park was developed by TCH 500 Alton, LLC, a partnership between two of Miami Beach’s deepest-rooted real estate developers: David Martin and Russell Galbut. The development team, which is also behind the neighboring Five Park residential tower, constructed and donated the park to the City of Miami Beach’s Parks & Recreation Department as a gift to the community’s residents and visitors.
“The park will be a gateway for the City of Miami Beach, a destination for visitors, and an everyday amenity for residents, so we’ve taken the time to assemble a team of visionaries who have led some of the most transformational projects in the world,” said developer Russell Galbut of TCH 500 Alton, LLC. “We’ve created a vibrant community asset that brings people together while providing a design experience that rivals public spaces in the world’s greatest cities.”
“The park was designed with beautiful aesthetics in mind but also serves a broader environmental purpose,” said developer David Martin of TCH 500 Alton, LLC. “Its innovative sustainability and resiliency attributes will benefit not only the future residents of the adjacent Five Park tower, but also the entire surrounding neighborhood.”

Active wine enthusiasts rejoice! Wine Water is bringing you a refreshing alcoholic drink to be enjoyed all summer long. Inspired by the active, coastal lifestyle in Wilmington, North Carolina, Wine Water is for working hard and playing just as hard.
Wine Water is exactly what it sounds like - crafted with two simple ingredients, dry French wine and sparking water. There are no added flavors and nothing artificial. Compare that to other popular spirit and malt based seltzers available with unnatural ingredients and flavors.
Another perk - Wine Water comes in portable cans. Each can is 4.9% alcohol and just 69 calories, with 0 grams of sugar, low sulfites, and non-GMO. This means a can of Wine Water fits into gluten free and vegan lifestyles.
There are currently two varietals available:
On the palate, the bright acidity of the French Dry Rosé wine is balanced by the effervescence of the pure sparkling water. With aromas of strawberry and melon generously expressed, this simple but striking combination reveals an incredibly refreshing tasting experience - perfectly paired with an afternoon in the sun, by the pool, or anywhere good friends gather.
Aromas of exotic fruits including pineapple and mango are featured on the nose and palate, and are beautifully balanced with the effervescence of the pure, sparkling water. Simple but striking, Wine Water Sauvignon Blanc is the perfect expression of the Entre-Deux-Mers terroir in an approachable, incredibly refreshing, easy-to-enjoy presentation.
Two other varietals, Cabernet and Chardonnay, are arriving later this year.
A percentage of all Wine Water profits are donated to support clean water initiatives. You can find Wine Water at Trader Joe's across Miami. To see other locations, click here.

The City of Miami Beach has partnered with premier soccer development agency Upright City to launch a first-of-its-kind Seniors Soccer Champions Program in Miami Beach. The program is designed for men and women over 65.
The free program will also be open to Miami Beach residents who are over 55 based on availability. Preregistration is encouraged since participation is on a first-come, first-served basis.
“This is a wonderful program for any senior who is healthy enough for physical activity,” explained Miami Beach City Manager Alina T. Hudak. “Soccer is the perfect sport for any senior looking to improve their health, get outside or make new friends.”
Upright City founder Alex Avellanet said the program was created to address a lack of sports programming for seniors. She said her company’s mission is to “create positive social impacts, bring people together and create a better tomorrow through soccer — one city at a time."
Soccer has been shown to promote mental and physical health, making it ideal for seniors. It improves cardiovascular health, strengthens bones, raises oxygen absorption, increases mental alertness, enhances balance and is great for stress relief while helping seniors strengthen social bonds.
Retired international soccer player Pablo Lima will oversee the coaching effort. Lima played left-back on Uruguay’s National Team.
To sign up for the program, volunteer or make a donation to support the program contact Upright City via email at connect@uprightcity.com.
The program kicks off today at Flamingo Park Football Stadium in Miami Beach from 10 - 11 am and will be held on Tuesdays going forward.

Meet Mika Shevit, a Sunny Isles Beach resident and running powerhouse.
Mika Shevit: “Every single day since April 1st, 2021, I’ve run a complete half marathon: 13.1 miles, seven days a week.”
You heard that right. Mika has completed a half marathon every day for more than a year. Mika has logged more than 5,000 miles. That distance is the equivalent of running from Miami to Los Angeles and nearly back across the country again.
Mika Shevit: “Which is mind-boggling, but you can’t think about it like that. You have to just do one run at a time, and then you have to recover.”
But when you’re lacing up every day, recovery time is limited. The 47-year-old runs in the evening or early in the morning. It takes him about two hours to complete the 13.1 miles. But for Mika, it’s about endurance, not speed.
Mika Shevit: “The main reason I could run every single day is because I don’t overthink the run. It’s like brushing your teeth.”
But his first two attempts at running every day both ended with injuries on Day 75. The third time was the charm. Three weeks ago, Mika hit the magic number: 365.
Mika Shevit: “It was amazing. It was one of the greatest days of my life.”
The moment, plus selfies from his daily runs, are posted on Instagram, and all of his run times and routes are recorded on an app.
Mika Shevit: “It’s all completely documented.”
Earlier this month, with his family by his side, Mika’s accomplishment was recognized by the city commission. Sunny Isles Beach Vice Mayor Jeniffer Viscarra: “Now, instead of saying ‘Be like Mike,’ in Sunny Isles Beach we say ‘Be like Mika.'”
Mika Shevit: “Why? Well, first of all, I wanted to get in shape for myself, and I wanted to do something just way out there to prove to my kids that hard work really can take you so far.”
Mika Shevit’s hard work is set to take him to half marathon Day 400 on May 5. For more on his runs and routes through South Florida cities, click here or go to his Instagram page.

lululemon is launching a membership program — and it’s about more than workout clothes.
The athletic apparel retailer will debut two tiers of memberships, one free and one paid, in a bid to build a stronger base of loyal customers. The offerings come with exclusive access to items, events and fitness classes.
lululemon says the move could help the retailer lower its cost to acquire customers, as it creates the “most immersive fitness marketplace” in the industry.
While lululemon certainly isn’t the first retailer to launch a unique loyalty program, not many apparel businesses offer an option that customers pay for each month. lululemon could set an example for others to follow as the company and its peers seek new revenue streams beyond the rack.
The free membership option will give users early access to lululemon product drops and exclusive items, as well as invitations to in-person community events, the company announced Wednesday during an analyst day event.
The second option will cost members $39 per month, the same price as an all-access subscription to lululemon at-home fitness platform, Mirror. Current Mirror users will be rolled into this new subscription tier at no additional charge, the company said, which will also offer workout content from a number of studios that lululemon is partnering with, including Rumble, Y7, Pure Barre and DogPound.
Paid subscribers will also receive all of the perks included in the free tier, when both options officially debut in the fall.
“We want to continue to add as much value as we can in that $39 membership tier as possible,” said Michael Aragon, chief executive officer of lululemon’s Mirror, in his first media interview since joining the company. “It’s becoming a growth engine for lululemon overall.”

A group of Miami seniors were featured in The New York Times for their handball traditions in South Beach. In case you don't know, handball is a sport where players pass a ball using their hands, aiming to throw it into the goal of the other team. Read below for an excerpt of the article.
Nestled in the heart of South Beach, Flamingo Park has been a haven for handballers in South Florida since the 1970s. A half-mile from Miami Beach’s party scene, the quiet handball courts here have seen their share of world champions and are home to a consistent crew of players, most of them between the ages of 60 and 80. Fifty years of play have battered the once-vibrant pastel walls of the courts, which are now primed with a fresh coat of white paint. But you’re still likely to find the same motley crews and trash talkers of years past.
Aside from typical banter and arguments about the score, conversations often revolve around health — both physical and the health of the game. Hand surgeries, knee issues, bypass surgeries and car accidents are all fair game for the trash talking (and excuse-making). There’s an endearing camaraderie within the group that keeps people coming back.
The game has helped the current crew defy their ages, but some of them fear a lack of younger faces will eventually catch up to the sport. Concerns about the health of four-wall handball have seemingly been around for as long as the old courts of Flamingo Park, but the question remains: Can the sport survive with only occasional late bloomers joining the fray, or will younger players be needed to keep the game alive? For now, a group of older ambassadors will carry the torch.

Celebrate the International Day of Happiness at The World Happiness Summit this Friday, March 18 through Sunday, March 20 at the University of Miami. The 3-day event analyzes happiness from different angles, on an individual, relationship, organizational, workplace, education and community level, teaching attendees how to implement evidence-based tools to create a sustainable happiness practice.
Explore the six elements of well-being for a holistic approach to happiness. This includes mindfulness, fostering healthy living practices, finding meaning in your personal and professional life, creating and maintaining strong relationships, and more. The event will have simultaneous translation to Spanish at the in-person event and will also be live streaming.
Founder Karen Guggenheim had her ‘aha’ moment after her husband suddenly died from the flu and four days later, she had challenges figuring out what to do and how to be happy from the core. She quit her job and created the company WOHASU in 2016. Partnering with doctor Sandro Formica, Guggenheim developed a corporate training including the Chief Happiness Officer program co-certified with Florida International University’s Chaplin School of Hospitality Management, fostering positive culture at work. Under her leadership, WOHASU®, LLC was awarded with the “Key of the City of Miami,” by the Miami Mayor and the members of the Miami City Commission.
The summit days will begin at 7:30 am with an hour of yoga, and go all day with sessions that include sound bowl meditation, experiential breakout sessions on laughter, and group work with professional coaches for a holistic approach in different areas of life. You can check out the full speaker lineup here
On March 17, there will also be a pre-summit workshop by positive psychologist Robert Biswas-Diener and evening VIP Opening Reception co-hosted with Britto’s and the Happy Art Movement at Britto Palace.
