Want To Succeed As A Fitness Entrepreneur? Follow These 5 Pro Tips

I want to help you build an infrastructure and cultivate a philosophy that will put you on the path to a thriving wellness brand. Here are my tips for creating a successful fitness business.

Okay, so you are crushing it as a personal trainer or spin instructor or group fitness expert. And now you are ready to branch out and start your own fitness biz. Awesome! But here’s the thing: being a rock star at your craft and running a successful business is not mutually exclusive. At all. That’s a lesson that I – a fitness small business owner myself – learned after many, many years of hitting roadblocks, changing direction and learning what works (and what doesn’t). Through these lessons (which I share below), I have taken Pilates in the Grove from a 500-square-foot space to two, 1,600-square-foot locations that generate seven figures…and growing. And now I want to help you build an infrastructure and cultivate a philosophy that will put you on the path to a thriving wellness brand. Here are my tips for creating a successful fitness business.1. Understand Your WHYIt is crucial to not only understand WHY you are doing what you’re doing, but to be able to articulate that to your clients. Really think about it: what gets your juices flowing? What is your business’s purpose? And more importantly, why should your potential customer care about what you’re “selling”? In his book, “Start With Why” (which I highly recommend to any entrepreneur and their team), Simon Sinek writes, “People don’t buy what you do, they buy why you do it.” And that couldn’t be truer.2. Understand Your WHOI often hear fitness professionals say that “anyone can benefit from my services.” While that may be correct, it actually undervalues what you do and the service you provide. Creating a niche market and truly understanding your customer base (and how they think) will yield much higher returns, especially when budgeting where and how to spend your marketing dollars and time. So set out to become the go-to person for [fill in your fitness specialty]. Not everyone is your customer…and that’s ok.3. Build A CommunityPeople enjoy doing business with people that they like. It’s just human nature. It’s kind of like that restaurant you keep going back to, not because the food is the best, but because the host knows your name and the bartender remembers your favorite cocktail. Consumers like to feel special, and it’s no different with fitness clients. Growing a successful fitness business is not just about running your clients through a program of exercises, but about developing that personal relationship and creating trust. This approach cultivates clients for life, rather than for a season.4. Keep Your Clients On TrackSet goals for your clients, and then demonstrate consistency in helping them achieve those goals. Clients seek you out because they want something different or better than what they have or had. They are looking to you for guidance and accountability to achieve their desired results, so communicate with them. Speak directly about how often they should work with you for optimal results, and encourage them to schedule sessions for weeks and even months in advance. Keeping your customers consistent with their schedule improves accountability and ensures a full schedule for you.5. Continue To Learn & GrowThe world around us never stops moving forward, and neither should we. If you want your business to thrive, seek out opportunities to learn, grow and improve. With new studies about human biomechanics, treatment options and fitness protocols constantly emerging, there’s a lot of information out there. Attend fitness conferences/workshops, listen to podcasts and read. Read a lot. Train with an expert in your area, and soak up all you can from them. Surround yourself with a team that inspires and motivates you to be better. Even after 20 years in the wellness industry, I am still an education junky that seeks every opportunity to learn from the best. And I believe that has been a key to my success.I’ll be the first to admit that scaling a profitable fitness biz isn’t easy, but I can tell you from firsthand experience that it is possible. So get focused, work hard and prepare yourself to succeed. And finally, don’t worry about what the competition is doing. Focus on you, your clients and your goals. You are, after all, your best investment.

So much so, that they shared with us their Grit Fit Tips for safety. Here are four Grit Miami Fit Tips that will have you ready for your first class at Grit Miami:Check Your Ego – It’s important to stay within your own comfort level when deciding how much weight you can efficiently move. Grit Miami’s coaches are always on the floor to help guide you on just how much load is appropriate for your fitness level.Form Matters – A challenging yet attainable rep scheme is key. Once fatigue sets in, your form may be compromised, and that’s when injury usually occurs.Slow Down – Not only is the frequency imperative, but the speed at which you perform any movement is equally important. A slower pace, in some cases, may prove to be more beneficial since it keeps you mindful of form and technique. Know Your Limits – Being mindful of your own limitations is pivotal, especially in a group setting. It may be easy to imitate others’ rep schemes or the amount of weight they are stacking on their bar. In the end, each person must be in tune with their body’s abilities at that moment.

Sitting is the New Smoking: 3 Things You Need to Know

Here are a few videos for a quick explanation on why exactly sitting is so destructive to the body and some simple solutions that you can start today.

Legendary comedian, Jerry Seinfeld, said it best, “To me, if life boils down to one thing, it's movement. To live is to keep moving.”In a society where we spend an average of 12-hours a day sitting, movement has seemed to take a back-seat to technology (think laptops, phones, cars and TV’s).While moving our bodies has a direct correlation with overall health and longevity, it has an equally profound effect on our brain function, memory, and cognition. If I haven’t yet convinced you to sit less and move more, then maybe these scary statistics from the Center of Disease Control will.

  • Over 100 million Americans are living with Diabetes or Prediabetes
  • 1 in 3 Americans is obese (compared to 12% in 1960’s)
  • Americans spent over $100 billion in 2016 to “treat” back pain
  • Over 3 million deaths in the U.S per year are due to physical inactivity

Now, that is the bad news - but here’s the good news:YOU ARE IN CONTROLBy making some simple lifestyle changes, we can reverse a lot of the negative effects of Sitting Disease. By simply sitting less and moving more, we can dramatically increase our health and prevent future disease. In addition, you will likely see your focus and productivity improve with mood and energy levels increasing as well. Here are a few videos for a quick explanation on why exactly sitting is so destructive to the body and some simple solutions that you can start today.

Miami Beach Votes to Continue Allowing Kiteboarding

In a unanimous vote Wednesday, the Miami Beach City Commission left most of the beach open to experienced kiteboarders, backing off what one commissioner called a “knee-jerk” reaction to restrict the sport along the waterfront.

In a unanimous vote Wednesday, the Miami Beach City Commission left most of the beach open to experienced kiteboarders, backing off what one commissioner called a “knee-jerk” reaction to restrict the sport along the waterfront. Before a roomful of kiteboarders in blazers and tinted sunglasses, the commission set new rules: No kiteboarding south of 24th Street, or between 25th and 29th streets, where the beach is severely eroded and home to high-occupancy condos. But a small patch at 25th Street and everything north of 29th Street will be fair game –– as long as the kiters steer clear of swimming zones and are certified level three riders. All beginning kiteboarders will have to take their lessons at the designated learning beach on 76th Street, commissioners said, where Bouchet Brothers concessionaire has its stand, the Kite Shop, offering equipment, apparel and lessons. The motion settled a months-long battle between boarders, local residents, and public officials. Historically, kiteboarding has not been strictly regulated on Miami Beach, but an angry complaint letter lodged in October by someone who had been hit by a kite brought the sport to the attention of the city. After the city received the letter, Ocean Rescue installed a lifeguard tower at 26th Street, turning the kiters’ favorite launch spot into a swimming zone. One of the city’s few restrictions on kiteboarding prohibits the activity within 400 feet of a lifeguard tower.“There was one accident, and safety officials responded with a knee-jerk reaction,” Commissioner John Elizabeth Aléman said. “Lifeguard towers are for swimming safety, not kiteboard enforcement.”In addition to determining where kiteboarders could legally practice their sport, the resolution included three safety regulations, proposed by the kiters themselves.

  • Kiters must stay 200 feet from shore at all times.
  • Kiters must stay 50 feet from swimmers at all times.
  • Kiters can use the beach only for launching and landing.

Now that regulations have been determined, city staff will draft a plan to figure out who will enforce them. After the commission voted, two dozen boarders filed out of the room, cheering and clapping each other on the back.“I feel very happy,” said Bruno Perez, a Miami Beach businessman and longtime kitesurfer. “I’m glad the city was able to reach a consensus. I’m going to the beach today.”Residents who had opposed kitesurfing were also pleased. Although no representatives of the condominiums attended the commission meeting, several expressed their satisfaction with the result later in a phone interview.“We wanted regulation and enforcement. We wanted the kites restricted from going to close to shore,” said Otto Ramos, a resident of Oceanfront Plaza. “I’m very much glad this is over.”The only person who voiced unhappiness was Francisco Escudero, an 18-year kitesurfer who helped found the Miami Beach Kiteboarding Foundation, the nonprofit that established the safety regulations.Escudero runs Skybanditz Kiteboarding and has been petitioning the city since 2011 for a special permit to teach lessons. But teaching permits are very hard to come by, Escudero said. The Kite Shop has the only kiteboard teaching permit on Miami Beach. The kiter said he was pleased that recreational kiteboarding would continue along Miami Beach, but that he felt instructors had been scapegoated. Limiting lessons to the 76th street area would give The Kite Shop a monopoly on instruction, Escudero said.“I’ve been painted as the bad guy here,” Escudero said, “but there could be lessons at other locations along the beach. I’m just going to keep petitioning the city.”*This article was originally published on The Miami Herald by Tartly Hitt and can be found here. Photo by Daniel A. Varela.

With challenging total body workouts and complete nutritious meal-plans, F45 Doral is a one-stop-shop for a healthy lifestyle makeover and out-of-the box training for the most advanced gym rats. What is F45?F45 Doral is a circuit-style workout using functional exercises at timed intervals to get your heart rate up and tone every muscle. Husband and wife co-owners and head instructors at F45 Doral decided to open the franchise when Amanda was bored with her regular gym routine and couldn’t stay committed to exercise. The Brazilian Co-Founders – Amanda Silvestre, a nutritionist, and Ivan Pipolo, a fitness enthusiast – researched different training programs and were sold on F45 when no treadmills were involved in setting up the studio.“It was torture having to spend an hour by myself [on a treadmill]," said Sylvestre. "F45 is a community where people are excited to workout."What can you expect? There are different formats to each circuit class, like the "Foxtrot" class inspired by army training exercises, and "Brooklyn" - a class packing plenty of boxing punches. While "Foxtrot" and "Brooklyn" are more cardio-focused, the "All-Star" and "MKatz" workouts feature more weights and resistance training to build strength.F45 instructors demo each move on an LCD screen right in front of you before class begins. The screens also show a countdown timer and participants’ heart rate and earned fitness points. Just sync your heart rate monitor to the F45 challenge app. What is the F45 challenge? The "F45 Challenge" is an 8-week program designed for weight loss. The results are no joke - two Doral members have dropped over 100lbs combined. The challenge starts with a complete body analysis using InBody to measure fat vs. muscle mass and other biostatistics. The results are reviewed and analyzed, follow-by an orientation.Challengers will receive a meal plan complete with recipes and weekly grocery lists and commit to the F45 Doral workouts. The best part is the community support. Share your protein-packed food pics to Instagram with hashtag #f45challenge, compete in class for the most fitness points, and push your limits thanks to the coaches enthusiasm during the workout.Ready to try it? SobeKick Live Gives Viewers an On-Demand Workout From Anywhere

SobeKick has found a way to make it feasible for just about anyone to feel like they’re working out in Miami, regardless of their physical location, by introducing SobeKick Live.

Miami Beach is no stranger to the booming fitness industry spreading throughout South Florida. Sunset Harbor resident SobeKick, has found a way to make it feasible for just about anyone to feel like they’re working out in Miami, regardless of their physical location, by introducing SobeKick Live.SobeKick Co-Owner, Johnny Rock, was inspired to create the SobeKick Live program last summer, as a way to keep people who come to Miami motivated to be in the best shape of their life, with a “summer forever vibes” mentality. After messing with a few ideas, the design for an on-demand, live stream video feed of his Miami trainers pushing viewers to being the best version of themselves, was the solution.“The trainers are excited and motivated for the SobeKick Live program just as much as the online viewers,” said Rock. “It allows them to build their own brand and get more clients for themselves. Trainers are also compensated for the people tuning into the Live program, so they too are wanting to give it their all.”

SobeKick

SobeKick Live allows users to workout from anywhere with direct instruction from the SobeKick trainers. The Live program is on demand via web, iOS and Android, with Roku and Apple TV accessibility coming soon. With a membership, you get access to the SobeKick class lineup, ranging from Boxing Bootcamp, Cardio Kickboxing, Abs & Butt, Core, Yoga and more. 35 new classes are added every week, totaling 140 new classes a month.“I have been with SobeKick about four years now,” said Shay Medal, SobeKick member. “I absolutely love the online classes. It’s exactly like attending the actual class and just as motivating. In one-hour, I’m burning up to 800 calories.”SobeKick Live is offering a promotion, with the first 30-days as a free trial, with no credit card needed. The program runs $29 a month, and is a month-to-month membership, with no commitment.SobeKick also offers a yearly subscription for $199, a steep discount from the month-to-month package. They also have gloves, jump ropes, weights and standup boxing bags for purchase as well. For more information, visit http://sobekick.com/.

The Iconic Muscle Beach South Beach Set to Reopen March 3rd

The City of Miami Beach has announced that the six-week renovation of Muscle Beach, located at 9th and Ocean Drive, is set to reopen, Saturday, March 3, 2018, with a ribbon cutting ceremony scheduled for 10am.

The City of Miami Beach has announced that the six-week renovation of Muscle Beach, located at 9th and Ocean Drive, is set to reopen, Saturday, March 3, 2018, with a ribbon cutting ceremony scheduled for 10am.“MyEquilibria designs and manufacturers all of our own equipment,” explained Raquel Rodriguez, Co-Founder of MyEquilibria. “The prior Muscle Beach South Beach had a fairly small, but relatively complete outdoor gym consisting of basic bars. Our equipment is based on free body weight training.”The biggest upgrade comes in the form of MyEquilibria’s iconic “Tree,” an artistic rising 21-foot tall functional training system. When installed, the “Tree” is functional with a rings station, parallel bars, pull-up bar and elevated hooks for TRX and overhead resistance bands.Surrounding the aesthetically pleasing training “Tree,” will be 11 fitness accessory stations, some of which includes a twisting stability board, various handles, grips and bars, and a “wellness stone,” with low hooks for resistance bands and a low bar for triceps dips or incline push-ups. The stone is specifically curved and engineered to facilitate stretching, yoga, tai-chi and TacFit.“The designer of MyEquilibria’s “Tree,” Vito di Bari, and MyEquilibria Founder and CEO, Gian Luca Innocenzi, were both in touch with the Former Mayor Beach, Philip Levine, during the research and development stages,” said Rodriguez. “Mayor Levine was very supportive of the project, as was commissioner Ricky Arriola, and Parks & Recreation Director, John Rebar, who were all instrumental in pushing this project along.”The “MyBeast” section is a 30-foot long monkey bars, specifically designed for adults and athletes. Connected are 12 fitness stages which includes various handles, grips and bars for anything you can dream up, and a punching bag, stored in a lockable storage box overnight.“The sculptural elements are made from HPC (High Performance Concrete) and Ultra HPC,” said Rodriguez. “HPC is a mixture of reinforced concrete with granite or marble. Except for the newest line Calisthenics Pro, all of our equipment has the latest in international safety certifications specifically for outdoor fitness equipment.”The Calisthenics Pro makes up a separate area designed to replace the most popular equipment on the previous Muscle Beach design. A flag pole, converging parallel bars and tri-level pull-up bars, all freshly installed with the heights and diameters of the old equipment, but reinforced, painted and finished to prevent corrosion from the salt air and beach conditions. You can watch all of the action unfold on the Muscle Beach South Beach Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/musclebeachsouthbeach.

Consciousness in Motion at OM Movement

Everyone’s reasons for practicing yoga are different and OM Movement ensures to offer a space for a varietal of practices.

As someone that has been practicing yoga for several years, I have found that one central theme remains the same: Practicing yoga is a workout for your body and your mind. Everyone’s reasons for practicing yoga are different and OM Movement ensures to offer a space for a variety of practices. After a few classes at OM Movement, it proved that you really can exercise your mind, body and spirit at this studio. Located in central Coconut Grove, across from Peacock Park, the location couldn’t be more fitting and zen. The studio is beautifully decorated with thoughtful sayings, dreamy yogi merchandise and, my favorite part, a front desk adorned with plenty of sparkling crystals. Definitely an entrance that hums “Ommmm.”The OM Vinyasa class at OM Movement with Joan Varini was a reminder to why myself, and many others, continue to practice yoga. She began class with a reflection on the idea that everyone does practice for different reasons and stressed that yoga is meant to evoke a sense of community as the word itself means "union" or "connection."During the OM Vinyasa class, Varini led us through a 75-minute heated (81oF) class with each movement carefully explained, assisting us in reaching our best form while also providing her insight into yoga.OM Movement’s philosophy of “Conscious Movement” is evident throughout the studio. Each room is named after a yoga phrase such as prana, meaning "breath" or "primary energy." Located at the back of the studio, this room is outfitted with equipment such as kettlebells, medicine balls, and jump ropes. The Prana room is for their “Soul Sweat” group fitness class, a high-intensity group fitness workout where the class moves in groups from one station to another. In the "Soul Sweat" class, with Christian Oliveira, we moved through rounds of box jumps, ring rows, wall balls, v-ups, and burpees. All of the exercises were scalable to your level and Oliveira took the time to correct form and keep the class motivated throughout. A slightly different style of class than you would normally think to take at a yoga studio.Which is why the variety of the classes makes OM Movement so unique. In addition to Soul Sweat, the studio offers classes such as OM Power Yoga, Fluidus Method Yoga, OM Heated Power Yoga, OM Hybrid, Skanda Yoga, Aerial Yoga and even Mindful Meditation. Both classes had the same meticulous awareness of movement and form by the instructors.OM Movement is located at 2895 McFarlane Road, 2nd Floor, Miami, FL 33133. Visit OM Movement Studio for more information, class descriptions and full call schedule.

How do you motivate each other in and out of the gym?We motivate each other daily. We're very driven individuals and take our jobs/careers seriously. We aim to be healthy people so we can enjoy life to the fullest. There's things we both want to accomplish in our lives, and we understand that through hard work, this can be attainable.Do you have any favorite places to train in Miami? We love to train at Fitbox Method and Life (obviously). Also outdoors, whether it’s at a park, beach, field, etc. Variety is key, always got to change it up.Apart from fitness, what else do you do as a couple for fun? When we have the time, we love to relax at various pools around town- always looking for new ones to try out. We like to try new things - whether we go to a museum, restaurant, gym, beach, or travel. And we love dogs and Game of Thrones!

How did you guys meet? Did fitness play a part?We met 9 years ago one afternoon on a training session at LA Fitness. Fast forward to 2016, Jenny was looking for a personal trainer and found me again on Instagram. We started working together and one thing led to another. Luckily fitness played a major part. How do you motivate each other in and out of the gym? We support each other on a daily basis. Jenny helps me stay organized and she's also my muse. She is the love of my life, the one person I can call my soulmate and swolemate. Anthony has been my biggest motivator and inspiration. I am so grateful to have him as my loyal partner and best friend. He has such a positive influence on my life. Together we create great energy and ideas, especially to influence others to work harder for their goals. How much work goes into your Instagram? Who is most likely the first to suggest a gym selfie/photo?A LOT! Jenny loves recording some boomerang clips for our Instagram stories during our workout sessions.

How did you guys meet? Did fitness play a part?We met in Brazil in 2014, introduced by a common friend that told us that we were the most active people she knew (she didn’t know a lot of fit people), so she said we would be perfect for each other. I ended up moving out of Brazil, and spent a year in Miami by myself, until we reconnected via social media. Four months later, Ivan decided to move here with me. Six months later we got married in Las Vegas and opened F45 Training in Doral. How do you motivate each other in and out of the gym?Ivan is the most focused person I know, and my motivation is to become someone like him someday. He never skips a workout and is always sharp with his diet. I think my way to motivate him is to cook 6,000 calories for him everyday! What is your favorite cheat meal?Burger and Ice Cream.

Ron Gilbert and Jai Faith

Ron Gilbert + Jai Faith

  • Status: Married – Nine Years
  • Follow: @ronnodaysoff and @jai.faith

How did you guys meet? Did fitness play a part?I was in Miami on business and met Ron in a nightclub and bonded over our interest in fitness and basketball. From there, we started dating and Ron moved to the Bronx where I lived until a little over three years ago, when we switched things up and moved back to Florida. What is the most challenging thing about working out with your significant other? We actually enjoy training together because we both have different styles of training. We'll take turns with who plans the workout, and we don't go easy on each other, but also pull from each other's energy in the workout. How much work goes into your Instagram? Who is most likely the first to suggest a gym selfie/photo?We feel like Instagram is a way to share fitness tips, motivation and moments. Moments in the day where we are training our mind, body and soul, as well as just letting go, in an effort to encourage others to do the same. Moments with our clients or people that just inspire us. I usually have the trigger finger for a selfie before Ron does.Apart from fitness, what else do you do as a couple for fun?We love dinner out, movies and adventures, so weekend getaways are the best! Doing fun things with our little one to take him outside of his regular routine. We also love throwing a good BBQ (my dishes are Veggie Based). We both love serving at Potential Church. Ron serves with the Youth and I lead the Dance Ministry Team choreographing features for our church.
