Destination Sport Miami to be Multisport $150M Facility

Destination Sport Miami is a $150 million multisports facility planned for Miami-Dade County.

Destination Sport Miami is a $150 million multisports facility planned for Miami-Dade County.

Christopher Corey, a spokesman for the developers of Destination Sport, said it would be the biggest indoor multisports facility in North America at about 820,000 square feet. It would be constructed behind the TopGolf at 11850 N.W. 22nd St., within the Beacon Lakes business park. The location is just west of Florida’s Turnpike and the Dolphin Mall.

Destination Sport boasts Hall of Fame receiver Randy Moss for football, Hall of Fame center Bryan Trottier for ice hockey, former U.S. Women’s National Team coach Jill Ellis for soccer, All-Star forward Glenn Rice for basketball and All-Star pitcher Livan Hernandez for baseball.

“The athletes involved in this project aren’t just putting their names on it,” Corey said. “They are designing the academy programming that is going on in the facility.”

The features of Destination Sport are designed not only for locals, but are expected to attract people from across the county and around the world for training and competitions, Corey said. The indoor setting will allow people to train and hold events without fear of the South Florida rain or heat, he added.

The facility will include:

  • Two NHL-regulation ice hockey rinks
  • A turf field for football or soccer
  • 18 NBA-regulation basketball courts
  • An esports arena with daily programming
  • 36 volleyballs courts
  • 11 USTA-regulation tennis courts
  • A 15,000-square-foot fitness center
  • A 50-meter Olympic pool
  • A 25-yard warm-water therapy and teaching pool
  • An indoor surfing simulator
  • Several restaurants and cafes with a focus on healthy food
  • 16 party/event rooms
  • A pro shop
  • About 300,000 square feet of flex space
  • About 350,000 square feet for medical, office or retail space

“Now a parent can go to one building and have all of the sports for their children to play,” Corey said. “And meanwhile, the parent can go to the fitness center or the wellness programs or the rejuvenation spa.”

Corey added that the construction process is going "according to schedule." It's expected to take about 24 months to build.

Dan Weber, an executive at Tru North Capital Group, said private capital has been raised for the project to cover its anticipated $150 million cost and the team is currently finalizing the site design with architect Robert Andrus of Andrus Architecture in Rockford, Michigan.

"This is getting more exciting as we get closer to getting it cranked up," Weber said.

In May, the Miami-Dade County Commission approved $2.94 million in incentives for Destination Sport, which was called “Project Phoenix” at the time. The incentive application said the facility would create 229 jobs with an average salary of $63,834 over 10 years.

The Miami-based fitness brand will continue its expansion within the U.S. market over the next year with new locations slated to open in 2022 in Broward County, New York City and Los Angeles.

The new Miami Design District studio will be equipped with state-of-the-art fitness and recovery equipment. 54D is a 9-week program that combines high-intensity training, custom nutrition, recovery and community. 54D has a no-excuses approach to fitness, which the 54D team considers crucial in order to deliver measurable results.

“We have built an amazing community in South Florida with our Coral Gables studio and are looking forward to continuing to grow our local 54D family with our new Miami Design District location,” said Rodrigo Garduño, Founder and Creator of 54D. “We already have a waitlist for the new facility and are excited to welcome our new members.

We're sure you've heard of F45 at this point, but have you stopped by for a workout before? F45 Coral Gables is here to convince you why you need to come in and experience a workout!

The experience:

As one of the fastest growing gyms in Miami, F45 highlights exactly what the name stands for, Functional training, or Functional 45 minutes. Within these 45 minutes, by alternating each day with high-intensity cardio, strength, or hybrid formats, they utilize timed intervals to focus on not only building, but maintaining lean muscle as well as promoting fat loss. With over 5,000 rotating exercises, their programming allows them to never repeat a workout and offers variety to build strength, endurance, and confidence with each workout.

You should also know:

F45 Coral Gables emphasizes personal training in a group training environment with two trainers in every class to demonstrate each exercise with modifications or progressions, accommodating any skill-level. Not only do their trainers work to carefully correct form and challenge you, but they create unmatchable energy that gives the studio a special intensity.

The F45 music mixes pump up the studio throughout the week to carry the momentum up to our signature Saturdays when they host an in-house DJ to make your morning sweat feel like a party!

What makes F45 Training unique:

"At F45 Coral Gables we want to build you up, not beat you up.  It all starts with our daily 45-minute strength, cardio, and hybrid sessions, and culminates with our Saturday 60-minute high energy DJ party," said Eddie Matos, Owner of F45 Coral Gables. "Speaking of parties, we get together as a family outside of the studio every couple of months to celebrate wins and each other.  Makes for a truly special community."

Why members love it:

New members love the 2 weeks for $2 trial.  It gives them a full F45 experience while deciding if the studio is the perfect fit.  Members consistently boast about the contagious, unique energy of F45 Coral Gables. It is an energy that makes those 45 minutes not only a workout, but something to look forward to each day. It is what allows them to create more than a gym, but a close-knit community, a family. Not only do they want to see their members grow and succeed, but they believe in celebrating and commending wins.

The extras:

The Coral Gables F45 studio is one of the largest F45s in the US, offering a spacious 3,300 square foot space surrounded by a 360 degree view of South Miami, so it feels like you are working out right under the sun. Rarely is parking ever free in Miami, but at their studio you are likely to find parking free of charge in the lot below us or in the additional parking garage next door.

In the event you need to leave straight to work or any event, they have two showers stocked with all of the necessities (shampoo, body wash, conditioner, deodorant). Additionally, if you ever forget your water or feel low on energy, they offer the option of water, Gatorade, muscle milk, Celsius, Bang, and C4 available for purchase to be sure you are fully fueled, energized, and hydrated.

How to join in:

They are one of the only F45s in the area that offers a 2-week trial. While many gyms offer a trial day or week, for only $2 they offer local South Miami/Coral Gables residents (or surrounding areas) to come try them out for a full 14 days. Following the 2-week for $2 trial, their unlimited membership prices are very competitive.  In addition, they offer many specialty rates for healthcare workers, teachers, military, family, and a killer budget rate for students. For those not looking for a full membership, they offer the option of individual drop-in classes or weekly passes, and class packs.

Location:

They are located at 5958 S. Dixie Highway, 2nd Floor, in South Miami. There are also other F45 locations across South Florida.

Much Anticipated AKT Miami Opens in Midtown Neighborhood

One of Miami’s hottest fitness neighborhoods welcomed a new neighbor this past week, as AKT opened the doors to their new studio in Midtown Miami at 3407 NE 1st Ave., on the street level of the Hyde Midtown Miami building.

One of Miami’s hottest fitness neighborhoods welcomed a new neighbor this past week, as AKT opened the doors to their new studio in Midtown Miami at 3407 NE 1st Ave., on the street level of the Hyde Midtown Miami building.

AKT Miami has been a much anticipated concept since announcing their arrival to the Miami market back in 2019. AKT, named after original founder Anna Kaiser, is a dance based cardio and wellness brand that brings together a unique combination of toning, interval, circuit, and dance-based workouts to their club style studio.

Walking into the AKT Midtown Miami location, the studio has an elevated feel and vibe, that exudes energy and excitement. The dark colors, neon lights, and high-energy music set the tone immediately for what guests can expect when they step inside the studio.

The space itself has merchandise on display, lockers for storage while you’re sweating, bathrooms, and all the needed amenities you’d expect from a boutique fitness brand.

Once you step inside the studio, you are transported to what feels like the dance floor of LIV or Story, with flashing lights, mirrors, and playlists featuring the latest music from world renowned artists.

Guests have the option to pick from four different class types - dance, bands, tone, and circuit. No surprise what each entails, but “Bands” is the signature class first timers should try.

“Bands” is what drew me to the AKT brand,” said AKT Miami owner Maria Van Thienen. “It’s unlike anything I’ve ever experienced, and our guests love it.”

In Bands, you’ll alternate between functional cardio and longer strength intervals that focus on balance, agility, and full-body conditioning as you work all planes of motion. Enjoy bass pumping sound tracks while your highly trained instructor takes you through a heart-pumping workout.

“All of our trainers go through an AKT certification process that teaches them how to lead our uniquely styled classes, and to maximize your workout output,” says Van Thienen. “We are constantly changing out music, choreography, and workout routines so guests never plateau and can always see improvement along their fitness journey.”

AKT Miami has “cancel any time” monthly memberships, and class pack options for sale. Class sizes are roughly 15-20 people depending on the class type. For more information visit https://www.theakt.com/location/miami-midtown.

Ludlam Trail Announced as New Shared-Use Trail in Miami

Thanks to a million-dollar appropriation from the state of Florida, Ludlam Trail is yet another future outdoor space for residents and visitors to enjoy. The funding will be directed towards the design and construction of the trail, and once completed, the Ludlam Trail will enhance bike safety, mobility, and connectivity for Miami-Dade.

The trail is proposed to generally follow the north-south alignment between SW 69th and 70th Avenues, within the former Florida East Coast (FEC) Railway right-of-way, running 5.6-miles, between NW 7 Street and SW 80 Street. The project is located in unincorporated Miami-Dade County and the City of Miami, Florida

The purpose of the Ludlam Trail is to provide a new shared-use trail in Miami-Dade County that will include safe, dedicated, direct pathways for walking, running, and cycling; to encourage active lifestyles and the use of green non-motorized modes of transportation; and to enhance overall connectivity and accessibility between schools, parks, transit stops and residences, workplaces and shopping.

The proposed project supports the vision to provide an interconnected trail system offering transportation alternatives and reducing traffic congestion for a livable, sustainable County. Ludlam Trail will be a vital component of a seamless network of future greenway and water trails connecting to the Metrorail Dadeland North Station to the south and to other planned trails including The Underline/East Coast Greenway, South Dade Trail, Snapper Creek Trail, East/West Trail and Merrick Trail. It will enhance mobility and strengthen connections to neighboring communities, providing increased opportunities for economic development.

Included in the trail proposal are bicycle repair stations designed to include all the tools necessary to perform basic bicycle repairs and maintenance, from changing a flat tire to adjusting brakes and derailleurs. Also included are trail shelters or rest stops along the corridor to include drinking fountains with both bottle filling as well as pet accessible water stations.

For more information on this project and to help shape the vision, visit bit.ly/ludlamtrail.

Imagine Farms is Growing Delicious Produce in an Indoor, Hydroponic Farm in Miami

Lettuce lovers rejoice! Taste the difference with Imagine Farms produce, grown right here in Miami with no pesticides or preservatives.

Lettuce lovers rejoice! Taste the difference with Imagine Farms produce, grown right here in Miami with no pesticides or preservatives.

Originally named Box Greens, the company was started in 2016 by two sisters, Cheryl Arnold and Lisa Merkle, who were born and raised in Miami. Lisa was recovering from a life-threatening cancer diagnosis; and Cheryl, a serial entrepreneur had just exited her previous endeavor. While Lisa was recovering from surgeries and chemotherapy, Cheryl was looking towards a brighter future with her sister by researching, designing, plotting, and planning what would eventually become Imagine Farms.

With Imagine Farms, they created an indoor, vertical, hydroponic farm located in Little Haiti. Here they can sustainably grow a wide variety of lettuces, herbs, and microgreens, utilizing technology and minimally impacting the environment. Not only do they use 95% less water than a traditional farm, but there is also no pesticides or harsh chemicals, no food waste, and no agricultural runoff.

"We're an indoor farm, because of the precise growing conditions our greens are flavorful, crisp, and tender," said Lisa.  "Our customers are obsessed!  We never use pesticides or harsh chemicals and deliver salad greens that are ready-to-eat, 365 days a year."

The manifesto of Imagine Farms is to produce large quantities of food within urban cities, minutes from where residents live, work, and play. Distributing in close proximity to where the produce is grown minimizes food miles and reduces food spoilage and food waste.

Some of the produce currently being grown and sold by Imagine Farms includes their Happiness Blend, which is their version of mixed salad greens with romaine, green leaf, red leaf, and crispy, and Butterhead Babes, which is butterhead lettuce that can be used as a lettuce cup for culinary dishes.

Expect to see microgreens, salad turnips, sorrel, white Russian kale, leaf broccoli, and round Paris carrots soon, and they are always open to requests of what else they should grow.

Greater Miami can enjoy the produce within hours of harvest through their subscription with local delivery. The subscription is $18 per week for a pound of lettuce, or $20 a la carte. Deliveries take place on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and greens can also be picked up directly at the facility.

New subscriptions get their first order free with the promo code Imagine Free at checkout. Visit imaginefarms.com or find them on Instagram at @imagine_farms.

Studio Highlight: Body Roll Studio Midtown Miami

Body Roll Studio opened last year on Miami Beach and now they have a new location in Midtown Miami. They celebrated their grand opening on April 28 and are looking forward to helping you recover!

After opening their first location in Miami Beach, Body Roll Studio has opened the doors to their second location in Midtown Miami.

The experience:

Body Roll Studio machines are designed to massage and shape all parts of the body. An infrared heated roller with adjustable speed and heat supply provides a massage with elements of acupressure that stimulates lymphatic drainage. Mechanical pressure of rotating, distinctively-shaped wooden rolls improves blood and lymph circulation, what helps to speed the metabolism up, reduce fat tissue and eliminate waste products. If applied regularly, body roll massages reduce the volume of body parts, shape the body, firm the skin and breaks up muscle tightness. In line with above mentioned effects it provides one of the most effective methods of fat burning and cellulite reduction.

What makes Body Roll Studio unique:

Body Roll Studio lymphatic massage machines are equipped with infrared and collagen lamps. The infrared radiation hidden inside the machines widens blood vessels and helps remove toxins from the body by penetrating deeper layers of the skin.

The machines are set up with a special positions sequence and exercises are set according to the principles of lymphatic massage. The machine speed is set individually for each customer based on their previous visits and physical activity. It is crucial to drink enough water during the procedure as muscles work at their maximum when the body is sufficiently hydrated. Liquid intake before and after massage is also very important as it helps the body to eliminate residues more easily.

"This is the perfect treatment for a post-travel detox to help reduce swelling and water weight after a trip," said Rachel Gregson, Marketing Manager at Body Roll Studio.

You should also know:

The infrared lights on the rollers help to expand the blood vessels and detox deeper than a standard lymphatic massage would, and you can also target the exact areas of your body that you want to.

Why members love it:

The reduction in cellulite, looseness of muscles, and improved digestion after regularly rolling. The machine also burns up to 400 calories per session so people love that as well!
