In a unanimous vote Wednesday, the Miami Beach City Commission left most of the beach open to experienced kiteboarders, backing off what one commissioner called a “knee-jerk” reaction to restrict the sport along the waterfront. Before a roomful of kiteboarders in blazers and tinted sunglasses, the commission set new rules: No kiteboarding south of 24th Street, or between 25th and 29th streets, where the beach is severely eroded and home to high-occupancy condos. But a small patch at 25th Street and everything north of 29th Street will be fair game –– as long as the kiters steer clear of swimming zones and are certified level three riders. All beginning kiteboarders will have to take their lessons at the designated learning beach on 76th Street, commissioners said, where Bouchet Brothers concessionaire has its stand, the Kite Shop, offering equipment, apparel and lessons. The motion settled a months-long battle between boarders, local residents, and public officials. Historically, kiteboarding has not been strictly regulated on Miami Beach, but an angry complaint letter lodged in October by someone who had been hit by a kite brought the sport to the attention of the city. After the city received the letter, Ocean Rescue installed a lifeguard tower at 26th Street, turning the kiters’ favorite launch spot into a swimming zone. One of the city’s few restrictions on kiteboarding prohibits the activity within 400 feet of a lifeguard tower.“There was one accident, and safety officials responded with a knee-jerk reaction,” Commissioner John Elizabeth Aléman said. “Lifeguard towers are for swimming safety, not kiteboard enforcement.”In addition to determining where kiteboarders could legally practice their sport, the resolution included three safety regulations, proposed by the kiters themselves.
Now that regulations have been determined, city staff will draft a plan to figure out who will enforce them. After the commission voted, two dozen boarders filed out of the room, cheering and clapping each other on the back.“I feel very happy,” said Bruno Perez, a Miami Beach businessman and longtime kitesurfer. “I’m glad the city was able to reach a consensus. I’m going to the beach today.”Residents who had opposed kitesurfing were also pleased. Although no representatives of the condominiums attended the commission meeting, several expressed their satisfaction with the result later in a phone interview.“We wanted regulation and enforcement. We wanted the kites restricted from going to close to shore,” said Otto Ramos, a resident of Oceanfront Plaza. “I’m very much glad this is over.”The only person who voiced unhappiness was Francisco Escudero, an 18-year kitesurfer who helped found the Miami Beach Kiteboarding Foundation, the nonprofit that established the safety regulations.Escudero runs Skybanditz Kiteboarding and has been petitioning the city since 2011 for a special permit to teach lessons. But teaching permits are very hard to come by, Escudero said. The Kite Shop has the only kiteboard teaching permit on Miami Beach. The kiter said he was pleased that recreational kiteboarding would continue along Miami Beach, but that he felt instructors had been scapegoated. Limiting lessons to the 76th street area would give The Kite Shop a monopoly on instruction, Escudero said.“I’ve been painted as the bad guy here,” Escudero said, “but there could be lessons at other locations along the beach. I’m just going to keep petitioning the city.”*This article was originally published on The Miami Herald by Tartly Hitt and can be found here. Photo by Daniel A. Varela.

The City of Miami Beach has announced that the six-week renovation of Muscle Beach, located at 9th and Ocean Drive, is set to reopen, Saturday, March 3, 2018, with a ribbon cutting ceremony scheduled for 10am.“MyEquilibria designs and manufacturers all of our own equipment,” explained Raquel Rodriguez, Co-Founder of MyEquilibria. “The prior Muscle Beach South Beach had a fairly small, but relatively complete outdoor gym consisting of basic bars. Our equipment is based on free body weight training.”The biggest upgrade comes in the form of MyEquilibria’s iconic “Tree,” an artistic rising 21-foot tall functional training system. When installed, the “Tree” is functional with a rings station, parallel bars, pull-up bar and elevated hooks for TRX and overhead resistance bands.Surrounding the aesthetically pleasing training “Tree,” will be 11 fitness accessory stations, some of which includes a twisting stability board, various handles, grips and bars, and a “wellness stone,” with low hooks for resistance bands and a low bar for triceps dips or incline push-ups. The stone is specifically curved and engineered to facilitate stretching, yoga, tai-chi and TacFit.“The designer of MyEquilibria’s “Tree,” Vito di Bari, and MyEquilibria Founder and CEO, Gian Luca Innocenzi, were both in touch with the Former Mayor Beach, Philip Levine, during the research and development stages,” said Rodriguez. “Mayor Levine was very supportive of the project, as was commissioner Ricky Arriola, and Parks & Recreation Director, John Rebar, who were all instrumental in pushing this project along.”The “MyBeast” section is a 30-foot long monkey bars, specifically designed for adults and athletes. Connected are 12 fitness stages which includes various handles, grips and bars for anything you can dream up, and a punching bag, stored in a lockable storage box overnight.“The sculptural elements are made from HPC (High Performance Concrete) and Ultra HPC,” said Rodriguez. “HPC is a mixture of reinforced concrete with granite or marble. Except for the newest line Calisthenics Pro, all of our equipment has the latest in international safety certifications specifically for outdoor fitness equipment.”The Calisthenics Pro makes up a separate area designed to replace the most popular equipment on the previous Muscle Beach design. A flag pole, converging parallel bars and tri-level pull-up bars, all freshly installed with the heights and diameters of the old equipment, but reinforced, painted and finished to prevent corrosion from the salt air and beach conditions. You can watch all of the action unfold on the Muscle Beach South Beach Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/musclebeachsouthbeach.

Strip away all of the gym selfies and #swolemate hashtags, and you’ll find some “fit couples” who’ve been shot by Cupid’s arrow. This group has successfully blended their love of fitness and their love for one another. Let’s get to know four Miami Fit Couples.
PJ Venturino + Oriana Alvarez
How do you motivate each other in and out of the gym?We motivate each other daily. We're very driven individuals and take our jobs/careers seriously. We aim to be healthy people so we can enjoy life to the fullest. There's things we both want to accomplish in our lives, and we understand that through hard work, this can be attainable.Do you have any favorite places to train in Miami? We love to train at Fitbox Method and Life (obviously). Also outdoors, whether it’s at a park, beach, field, etc. Variety is key, always got to change it up.Apart from fitness, what else do you do as a couple for fun? When we have the time, we love to relax at various pools around town- always looking for new ones to try out. We like to try new things - whether we go to a museum, restaurant, gym, beach, or travel. And we love dogs and Game of Thrones!
Anthony Mendez + Jenny Ho
How did you guys meet? Did fitness play a part?We met 9 years ago one afternoon on a training session at LA Fitness. Fast forward to 2016, Jenny was looking for a personal trainer and found me again on Instagram. We started working together and one thing led to another. Luckily fitness played a major part. How do you motivate each other in and out of the gym? We support each other on a daily basis. Jenny helps me stay organized and she's also my muse. She is the love of my life, the one person I can call my soulmate and swolemate. Anthony has been my biggest motivator and inspiration. I am so grateful to have him as my loyal partner and best friend. He has such a positive influence on my life. Together we create great energy and ideas, especially to influence others to work harder for their goals. How much work goes into your Instagram? Who is most likely the first to suggest a gym selfie/photo?A LOT! Jenny loves recording some boomerang clips for our Instagram stories during our workout sessions.
Ivan Pipolo + Amanda Silvestre
How did you guys meet? Did fitness play a part?We met in Brazil in 2014, introduced by a common friend that told us that we were the most active people she knew (she didn’t know a lot of fit people), so she said we would be perfect for each other. I ended up moving out of Brazil, and spent a year in Miami by myself, until we reconnected via social media. Four months later, Ivan decided to move here with me. Six months later we got married in Las Vegas and opened F45 Training in Doral. How do you motivate each other in and out of the gym?Ivan is the most focused person I know, and my motivation is to become someone like him someday. He never skips a workout and is always sharp with his diet. I think my way to motivate him is to cook 6,000 calories for him everyday! What is your favorite cheat meal?Burger and Ice Cream.
Ron Gilbert + Jai Faith
How did you guys meet? Did fitness play a part?I was in Miami on business and met Ron in a nightclub and bonded over our interest in fitness and basketball. From there, we started dating and Ron moved to the Bronx where I lived until a little over three years ago, when we switched things up and moved back to Florida. What is the most challenging thing about working out with your significant other? We actually enjoy training together because we both have different styles of training. We'll take turns with who plans the workout, and we don't go easy on each other, but also pull from each other's energy in the workout. How much work goes into your Instagram? Who is most likely the first to suggest a gym selfie/photo?We feel like Instagram is a way to share fitness tips, motivation and moments. Moments in the day where we are training our mind, body and soul, as well as just letting go, in an effort to encourage others to do the same. Moments with our clients or people that just inspire us. I usually have the trigger finger for a selfie before Ron does.Apart from fitness, what else do you do as a couple for fun?We love dinner out, movies and adventures, so weekend getaways are the best! Doing fun things with our little one to take him outside of his regular routine. We also love throwing a good BBQ (my dishes are Veggie Based). We both love serving at Potential Church. Ron serves with the Youth and I lead the Dance Ministry Team choreographing features for our church.

January is in the rear view - still sticking to that New Year's Resolution? According to U.S. News, 80% of New Year's Resolutions fail by February. Why do we have such a hard time sticking to goals that mean so much to us?To help answer that question, we asked 15 Miami fitness trainers the secret to goal setting. They gave us tips on how to achieve all sorts of goals, not just New Years Resolutions, and how to get back on the wagon if you've fallen off.Jacqueline Kasen – Body Architect, AnatomyBlock out an hour daily for the gym. It’s easy to say that you’ll hit the gym a few times a week, but as you know, things seem to always pop up last minute, ruining your gym plans. Make sure to set a time dedicated to the gym so you can hold yourself accountable. If it means setting a meeting in your calendar or going with a friend, do it. Treat going to the gym like a serious appointment that can’t be missed.Taylor Walker – Personal TrainerFind an instructor you love. There are hundreds of different types of workouts out there, and thousands of trainers, coaches and instructors, that you may or may not connect with. Find an instructor that inspires you and makes you want to work harder every session. The workout is a great motivator, but the instructor will make or break your consistency and help you stick with your long term goals.Gabriel Varona – Co-Founder, Stunna’s FitNow that the hype of the new year is over, reassess your goals and make sure they are realistic. Don’t give up, but don’t over commit to the gym or your diet. Be realistic and push yourself.Vanessa Marrero – Personal TrainerPlan ahead – plan the days you’re going to workout and write it down so you can see it. This helps with staying committed to an “appointment” with yourself. Space out your days so you don’t feel the stress of everyday life and your new commitment to the gym.Starr Hawkins – Co-Founder, Ass N AbsIt’s all about consistency. Set little goals and work on them everyday for the bigger goal. If you’ve already stopped following through on your goal this year, or haven’t started, it’s never too late to begin.Mason Trafford – Co-Founder, SoccerShapeNew Years resolutions have to change from resolutions to a way of life. Whatever you’re doing has to become part of your daily routine. The best and easiest way to make something a habit is to enjoy it. Surround yourself with a team or a group of good people who push you to be your best. Never underestimate the power of having fun. Achieving goals is always easier with a good team behind you.Nikki Pepper – Body Architect, AnatomySet SMART Goals - specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, timely – and keep them posted where you can see them every day. Some suggestions include a white board, your phone screen background, on a piece of paper on your nightstand or on your mirror in your bathroom - anywhere you’re bound to look at them daily.Rachel Scherdin – Instructor, PilatesBreak down your goal. I am a firm believer that if you set your mind to something you can do it, but its important to break down large goals into smaller ones. If your goal is to run a marathon, first build towards a 5K, and slowly add more miles after that. Then the large goal won’t seem so far off.

Gui Dapelo – Trainer, Barry’s BootcampSet smaller scale, realistic goals. Instead of focusing on “new year resolutions,” focus on “new day resolutions.” Never let a bad day derail you from your ultimate goals. Give yourself positive reinforcement you need to actually want to work towards your goal.Michelle Bertran - Founder, FierceFit MiamiOne thing we tell our FierceFit members to stay on track with their goals is to visualize them. Whether it’s putting a picture of their goal physique on their fridge, or writing their goals down and reading them every day, visualization is key.Illysa Vivo – Trainer, The Fit ShopGoals need to be a little fun. Choosing a schedule, gym and workout that excites you is key, and putting it into your routine. This should be something you look forward to that will keep you on track.Troy Walker – Recovery Specialist, AnatomyFor people who put in hard work at the gym or office, sleep is the time for physical and mental repair, making it essential to your training program. Throughout the day, our bodies are under enormous amounts of stress. Sitting at your desk puts stress on your core. Carrying gym bags or groceries puts stress on your shoulders. That’s just the physical side of things, not to mention the mental. Sleep is critical to help your body recover.Amanda Mestre – Yoga for AthletesRemember your “why.” Every day when your alarm goes off, sit-up and spend the first five minutes remembering your “why.” This is the reason behind you want to reach your goals. This is more important than the actual goal, because this is what is going to light that fire inside your soul. After you think about your “why,” visualize yourself as already having achieved it. Notice the emotion running through your veins and let that carry you through the day.Laura Ann-Roberts – Instructor, DanceBodyIf you slip up one day, there’s always tomorrow. Put a reminder or alert on your phone, so when it goes off, you read your goal that you’ve written down, reminding yourself what you are working towards. Hopping on a bike in Miami takes guts. Even for experienced cyclists, navigating aggressive drivers and oblivious pedestrians isn't easy. Picking a safe path is essential, which is why the Venetian Causeway has become one of Miami's most used bike routes. And the 2.8-mile stretch of asphalt that is the city's two-wheel superhighway just got an upgrade: Last week, Miami Beach unveiled new green bike lanes, hoping they will serve as a clear visual of the "share the road" mentality many Miamians have a hard time grasping. Those in the local bike community say the lanes make cyclists feel safer while signaling to drivers and pedestrians that bicycles also have a right to the road."The Venetian Causeway is already a favorite route for many," says Rydel Deed of the Miami Bike Scene. "If the green bike lanes encourage more people to ride their bikes, then that’s a step in the right direction."The initial plan would have limited the green bike lanes to just the portion of the causeway that's within Miami Beach city limits, but the county later agreed to put up the money to extend the lanes all the way to the city of Miami. The new lanes will extend 2.5 miles both eastbound and westbound, according to the Miami Bike Scene. For those who ride eastbound into Miami Beach, the city has also added hundreds of new bike racks since 2015, including 275 that were installed in 2017. Last week, Miami Beach unveiled 65 new long-term bicycle parking spaces at the 17th Street garage across the street from city hall, giving bike owners a place to park overnight or between rides. And if you need to do a quick tire change or brake adjustment, the city has you covered there too: Bicycle repair stations have been set up in South Beach at Washington Avenue and 11th Street and in North Beach at Ocean Terrace and 73rd Street so you can fix whatever is wrong and get back on the saddle.*This article was originally published on The Miami New Times by Jessica Lipscomb and can be found here.*

Consistent exercise provides both people and dogs with physical and mental benefits. Not only does exercise release endorphins, but it also helps improve coordination and balance for you and your pet. As if you needed another reason to workout with your dog, research has shown that people are more likely to continue with a weight-loss program if they exercise with their furry companion. Double win! Here are five pet-friendly workouts to keep you both active.
Some dogs were born to retrieve. Whether it’s a tennis ball, a Frisbee or bone, go outside and play a game of fetch. While your pup goes bounding after the ball, engage in some muscle-building exercises like crunches, lunges and squats. For some cardio, race him for the ball and squeeze in some sprints.
Yep. “Doga,” as in dog + yoga, is a thing and it’s all about the pet-human bond. Not only will your pooch act as a prop for your poses, but you’ll help him or her try some poses of their own. After all, your pup has already mastered downward dog.
Swimming is a low-impact exercise that you and your dog can both do. While most dogs love to swim, not all are comfortable in the water. Make sure to slowly introduce swimming to your dog by having him or her walk into shallow water with you. Keep water safety in mind, just as you would with children. And if swimming seems to not be your dog's cup of tea, consider one of the other exercises on this list.
Sand provides resistance, so walking on the beach is inherently more demanding than walking on concrete or other hard surfaces. Visit a nearby dog-friendly beach to shake up your routine walk around the neighborhood.
What better way to exercise with your dog than paddle boarding? While your canine co-pilot rides on the nose, you’ll get a killer ab workout in. Chances are, you’ll both take a dip in the water, so make sure your dog is wearing a life jacket. Before embarking on a physical fitness routine with your dog, consult your veterinarian. Just like physical fitness programs for humans, steady, progressive conditioning is the best approach for dogs. When conditioning a dog to increase fitness, consistency is a key to success. It is far better to take a 20-minute walk every day than a 2-hour walk on Sunday. A slow, steady build of intensity over time helps avoid injury and is more comfortable for the dog. For dogs that require additional challenges, you can advance to more intense activities like field trialing, flyball or agility competition. This article was written by Dr. Michael Sanwald, veterinarian at www.FetchMyVet.com.

A hot city with even hotter natives, it’s no surprise Miamians are constantly staying on top of their fitness and wellness regime. For Nikol Kovalchuk, Russian singer turned fitness model, there’s no other place to train at other than the Magic City. Married to llya Kovalchuk, professional hockey player, and mother of four — exploring a variety of fitness routines from power training to boxing and plyometrics became an escape outlet that allowed the model to reconnect with herself. With a deep admiration for professional athleticism, Nikol has focused on ensuring she is well-educated in both the physical training and nutritional aspects of fitness. Training six days a week under a disciplined workout routine that encompasses mind, body and soul, has allowed Nikol to work with the industry’s best coaches, dietician and trainers. With plans to create her own fitness platform that will help other women and busy moms fall in love with fitness and nutrition, Nikol shared the top three exercises she swears by to ensure she maintains a toned and bikini ready physic year-round.HIIT exercises - Also known as high-intensity interval training. Torch maximum calories in a minimum amount of time. Think alternating between bursts of high intensity exercises followed by short periods of active recovery. Examples include burpees, push and squats, sit up and jumps or jog and sprints. Do this about 2-3 days a week.“Everyone has at least 45 minutes to spare 3-4 days a week,” says Kovalchuk. “In the morning I schedule when that time is for me and stick to the promises I make myself. I try to get this focused workout in while the kids are at school and there is no distraction. They key here is to know it’s a short amount of time. You can do anything for a brief period and you need to keep your intensity level up to it’s maximum when you are doing your high-intensity training. Only you can help you.”Fitness bands - To target thighs and gluts, strap the band above your knees, assume squat position and move in and out like a jumping jack keeping knees bent to tone your lower body.“I try to use fitness bands twice a week,” says Kovalchuck. “I target four areas at a time. I do 12 reps for each targeted area and repeat 3 times. It’s simple and fun and I even put on 80’s music to get me in the mood for when this type of workout became popular.”Lunges – “While dumbbells are not only great for your quadriceps and glutes, but your hips and abs have to work harder when you hold the weight on just one side of your body,” says Kovalchuck.“The core is also kept engaged to maintain balance. Simply hold a dumbbell in your right hand and punch it up to the sky as you step forward with your right leg and lower your body until your right knee is bent at least 90 degrees for a proper lunge. Push yourself back to the starting position and repeat 10-12 times before switching sides.”“I will do 3-4 sets of these lunges 4 times a week. This is the best way to tone your legs and if I skip a day I can see a difference. I suggest starting with regular lunges. When they seem too easy add a little bit of weight. Don’t overdo it though.”
For Nikol Kovalchuk, Russian singer turned fitness model, there’s no other place to train at other than the Magic City.

I had the chance to meet these three innovative entrepreneurs and take part in their 7pm class. The workout began with some running drills to get the body moving and prepped for what was to come.Throughout the workout, we worked through agility circuits that included a soccer ball to aid in coordination while moving. We ended with some strength exercises that included pushups, sit-ups and planks for the core, squats for glutes, followed by a "cool off.”The atmosphere was fantastic. Good music was blasted and most importantly, the workout was challenging and well rounded. All three coaches were very motivating and knowledgeable and were there to help members achieve their best results. For more info and a first-hand experience visit: soccershape.org
