Society Barbell & Fitness

5 Questions with Lead Trainer of Society Barbell & Fitness, Tony Carvajal

Brickell's hottest new fitness facility, Society Barbell & Fitness, opened a few weeks back, so we thought we would catch up with lead trainer, Tony Carvajal, and see how things are going. Tony is a Level 1 and 2 Crossfit Trainer, Mobility Certified Trainer, Indoor and Open Water Rowing Certified Trainer, and Olympic Lifting and Gymnastics Certified Trainer. Needless to say, Tony knows what he is talking about when it comes fitness, which is why so many people are flocking to his gym. We picked his brain to get a little more insight into how he keeps his body in peak conditioning, and asked for some training tips. What is your favorite lift?Snatch. In my opinion, the Snatch is the most athletic movement that can be performed. It requires an immense amount of skill, balance, speed, strength and technique. The objective of the snatch is to lift the barbell from the ground to overhead in one continuous motion. It is also commonly used as a tool in training high level athletes in sports where powerful full body movement and explosion is required, and that is our objective at Society, to create athletes that are ready for whatever life throws at them. What is your favorite type of workout? My favorite style training piece is a Metabolic Conditioning Sprint workout. Something that involves multiple movements at a high work capacity at 90-100% effort for a short duration of time. What is your favorite Hero workout?A Hero workout is a workout that is named for a fallen Soldier, or First Responder. Generally these workouts are movements that that particular HERO favored and loved doing. These workouts are typically the hardest, most arduous workouts we will do and we do them happily and proudly as we know the fallen Hero laid their life on the line for our safety and freedom. My favorite is "Kalsu" - 100 Thrusters at 135lbs for time while performing 5 Burpees every minute on the minute until completion. Not only is this a strength based workout, it turns anaerobic quickly. It's the type of training piece that tests your entail fortitude. I would suggest many above average athlete to give this workout a try.Do you have any training tips for our readers? If I had to give one training tip I would say pick the movement or workout you hate the most. Then master the form and technique and do it until you have mastered it and eventually love it. Learn to do this and the possibilities for your progression as an athlete and in life will become limitless. How are things going at Society Barbell & Fitness since the opening? My partners and I are very focused on every last detail to create the right environment for any level athlete to thrive, feel motivated, push past limits and socialize with other like minded individuals. We are very grateful and proud of what we created and what I'm blessed to do everyday of my life. Not only have we created an environment where we take Fitness seriously, we have an environment where we take FUN seriously.

Aldi Plans South Florida Expansion, Starting With New Sunrise Location

Aldi recently opened its newest Florida store on Oakland Park Boulevard in Sunrise. This new location is one of a growing list of South Florida locations since the grocer first arrived in the state in 2008.

In the past decade, Aldi has expanded its footprint to more than 150 stores statewide and there are currently 39 Aldi stores in Palm Beach, Broward, and Miami-Dade counties.

Nationwide, Aldi is on pace to become the nation's third-largest "value" retail grocer, operating more than 2,000 stores in 36 states. Aldi recently invested more than $5 billion in a multiyear initiative to open hundreds of new locations.

"As we continue to expand, we promise to do everything in our power to offer the lowest prices, every day, without exception," Jason Hart, CEO of Aldi U.S., said in a press release. "In fact, as food costs continue to rise across the country, we're lowering prices on hundreds of items to meet our customers' increased need for savings."

The grocer's no-frills approach to shopping keeps overhead low. That also means Aldi doesn’t offer bags at checkout, so make sure to bring your totes. And bring change to rent a shopping cart for a quarter as well. (You get your quarter back when you return the cart.)

According to Chris Hewitt, vice president of Aldi's Royal Palm Beach division, the Florida expansion goes hand in hand with the company's push to increase its fresh-food selection by 40 percent over the past few years.

"Offering the best products at affordable prices is something that never goes out of style," says Hewitt. "We look forward to offering Florida customers more as we grow the Aldi footprint over the coming years."

FitLife Foods Reopened Its Plantation Location This Week

FitLife Foods Plantation reopened for business Monday after being closed for 13 months.

FitLife Foods is a meal prep company with in-store pickup and delivery, offering pre-made healthy meals and snacks, and health and wellness training. They have locations throughout Florida, including in Boca Raton and Fort Lauderdale.

On July 6, 2019, a gas explosion tore apart the plaza in Plantation where one of their stores was located. The blast was so powerful it leveled the restaurant and caused massive structural damage to everything else around it, forcing them to rebuild.

As part of the renovation, the Plantation location is now updated with a new look that FitLife is testing in different markets.

Fitlife Foods was the first business to re-open out of the 30+ businesses impacted by the blast.

"We hope that this location becomes a symbol for our company, our team, the Plantation community, and our customers," said Founder and CEO David Osterweil. "If there’s a lesson to be learned in all of this, it’s that 'It doesn’t matter what happens to you. It only matters how you react.'"

Follow their stories this week on Instagram @fitlifefoods to see their daily grand reopening giveaways.

How to Prep Your Kitchen for a Coronavirus Pandemic

Insome ways, of course, this situation is similar to hurricane preparation, wherewe frantically load up on nonperishables.

For starters, we might want to think about cooking.A month’s worth of supplies is a good estimate.

Also, we won’t lose electricity or our roofs. Soalong with the usual shelf-stable canned and packaged items we’re used topurchasing, we can buy perishable foods. But many fresh vegetables, fruits, andherbs go bad quickly or will be eaten before we’re able to go out and mingleagain.

In that case, Linda Gassenheimer, host of Food News and Views onWDNA (88.9 FM) and columnist for Quick Fix Dinner in Minutes, says, “Your freezer isyour friend." She advises stocking up on flash-frozen vegetables andfruits such as blueberries and strawberries. Because they're frozen just afterpicking, they often have more vitamins and minerals than fresh. “That broccoliin the produce section can be three weeks old,” she notes.

Nutrition-wise, Gassenheimer endorses leanproteins such as those big bags of frozen scallops and shrimp. “You can takeout what you need and put the rest back. Plus, they’re already peeled,"she says. "Just put them in a pot of cold water. Once they’re defrosted, you have cooked shrimp ready to use.”

Pulling from large batches — whether store-bought orhomemade — is clearly a smart idea. If recycling and trash services aredisrupted, you don’t want a kitchen or garage filled with dozens of sticky, smelly containers.

Betsy Karetnick, who formerly worked as the Morning Drive hostfor Martha Stewart and is familiar with prepping, cooking, and freezing inlarge quantities (and is this writer's sister), recommends stocking suppliesfor soups, i.e., hearty produce that lasts: potatoes, beets, carrots, celery. She also notes that of all fresh fruits, citrus keeps well in the fridge.“Bananas, like mangoes, can be peeled and frozen for smoothies and baking,” sheadds.

Baking is an excellent idea for families withchildren — it’s entertainment with an edible end — so add flour, sugar, bakingsoda, baking powder, vanilla extract, and eggs to your list. Plan to freezewhatever you don’t eat right away.

If you don’t want to bake, preservatives will do thetrick. Writers are best at practicing solitude, so what would they buy? PoetCatherine Esposito Prescott says she'll go for “those potato rolls that nevergo bad, and Entenmann’s products because they also never expire.”

For fresh herbs, buy them now and make pesto orpurée them with olive oil. Then freeze in ice-cube trays, release when frozen, and store in plastic bags so they don’t take up much room.

Feel free to treat yourself to gourmet items aswell. Go to Marky’s and buy truffles preserved in oil, as well as mustard, cornichons, foie gras, and sustainable caviar. Head to Costco and grab somehunks of cheese that make Jason Momoa’s head look small. In addition, ratherthan buying sliced deli meat that's sure to go rancid, opt for cured and driedsausages.

What’sthat, you say? Fats, salt, and nitrates? Forget about it. This is no time toworry about long-term harm to our arteries.

That said, don't load up the cheese drawer withpungent washed-rind cheeses such as Époisses de Bourgogne, which urban legendsays is so odorous it’s banned from public transportation in France. Even ifyou live alone, it flavors everything in the refrigerator.

Think quarantine might last longer than a month?Take a page from DoomsdayPreppers and order a year's supply of freeze-driedgoods from Walmart. The BaseKamp cheesy lasagna reportedly rocks.

And above all, be sure to stockpile your sense of humor. We'll all need plenty of that no matter what coronavirus brings.

Miami Beach

Miami Named Top Vegan City in America

The Magic City, known for its nightlife, beaches, and Cuban sandwiches, is now famous for its plant-based cuisine.

Miami has just been named the top vegan hot spot in the United States.

The ranking comes from a study by Hayes & Jarvis, a U.K.-based travel company. Though Miami wins for most vegan-friendly city in America, Dublin was awarded most veg-friendly in the world - one-fifth of the Irish city's restaurants offer vegan options.

Initially, Hayes & Jarvis explored the 50 most visited cities in the world for its survey. The company then analyzed TripAdvisor data to search for restaurants by cuisine and ratings. To be eligible for the final ranking, each city needed to contain a minimum of 500 restaurants. According to its website, Hayes & Jarvis analyzed data "between July 30, 2019, and August 1, 2019, to find the cities with the highest proportion of a particular restaurant's cuisine." The result is based on which cities boast at least 100 vegan-friendly establishments and have the highest proportion of them. Dublin was found to be the top vegan-friendly city in the world.

Next, the company turned its attention to the United States to find the nation's best cities for vegan dining. According to Tonje Odegard of the content marketing agency Verve Search, a new survey, conducted last week, explored vegan options in 250 cities across America. As with the world survey, U.S. cities with at least 100 vegan-friendly restaurants were considered to be included in the Top 10.

Miami - with nearly a quarter of its eateries offering at least one vegan option on the menu - came out on top. Charleston, South Carolina; Scottsdale, Arizona; Savannah, Georgia; New York City; Washington, D.C.; Orlando; New Orleans; Las Vegas; and Salt Lake City round out the U.S. Top 10.

Planta South Beach's chef de cuisine, Benjamin Goldman, says he's known all along the Magic City's plant-based food scene is thriving. "It's not a surprise that Miami, considering how eclectic and open-minded the community is, has become the most vegan-friendly city."

Goldman says vegan dining has come a long way from the once-stereotypical wheatgrass shots and sprout sandwiches. "Chefs who have not always cooked vegan, like myself, are using their approaches from nonvegan restaurants to re-create really good food out of plants. This is not something the plant-based community was used to in the past, so it’s a huge advantage."

Goldman says a plant-based lifestyle can be both delicious and beneficial for people and the planet. "It's about eliminating the footprint and honoring the body."

He says Planta, which OpenTable named one of the Top 50 restaurants for vegans nationwide, appeals to both vegans and nonvegans. "Planta is at the apex of vegan dining because not only is it a great restaurant with awesome food, but it offers a fun ambiance and superior service."

Planta is only one of many innovative plant-based restaurants in town. Plant Miami at the Sacred Space in Wynwood specializes in dishes using local produce, and the VShops is a completely vegan food hall in Coconut Grove. Miami is also home to the Seed Food & Wine Festival, set to return for its sixth season November 7 through 10 with a host of dinners, a tasting village, and many other events.

Erica Groussman of TRUWOMEN Wants to Change How You Snack

Snacking these days can be quite difficult. There are endless options, some of which are healthy for you, others not so much. So where do you begin? We caught up with Erica Groussman, co-founder of TRUWOMEN - a clean treat option that wants to simplify your decision making. Check out our interview with Groussman below.

Tell us a little bit about yourself - where are you from, how did youfind your way to the 305, etc.

I am originally fromBuffalo, New York and made the move to Los Angeles to study at UCLA. I hadalways wanted to explore the Big Apple, so after graduating, and working in Los Angeles in filmfinance for a few years, I moved back to the east coast to live in NYC.

During my time there, I met and fellin love with my husband who introduced me to the wonders of Miami Beach. Miamiis the perfect combination of sunshine, thriving businesses, and an emphasis onfamily life. I truly could not ask for a better city to raise my childrenalongside my amazing husband.

Tellus about your experience in the health and wellness industry.

Prior to startingTRUWOMEN, I have always been deeply involved in the health and wellnesscommunity. I’m a maven when it comes to spotting health trends, workoutconcepts, and consumable goods.

However, with more knowledge comesmore responsibility, and I began having great difficulty ignoring the gaps Ispotted specifically in the food market. We’ve seen such a great increase inalternatives that allow persons with food restrictions to enjoy more, but such a lack of quality and transparency iningredients. It was really my mission to make it so that more people couldenjoy delicious foods, while also getting the nutritious value that their bodies crave.

Tellus about TRUWOMEN - what made you start the company? Whatopportunity did you see? Where can we find the bars?

As a mom who is alwayson-the-go, I couldn't shake the fact that most snacks either taste good, yetuse ingredients I couldn't pronounce, or they use clean ingredients—but tastelike cardboard. And I knew I couldn’t be alone in demanding clean treats that Icould proudly crave.

Through the great network of friends, I crossed paths with my co-founder Stephanie Pyatt and she too became obsessed with blurring the lines between healthy and delicious. The more we asked women what they wanted to snack on, the stronger we committed ourselves to create clean products that most everyone can enjoy.

For TRUWOMEN, that meant doing the hardwork to make our protein bars vegan, gluten-free, non-GMO and free of sugaralcohols. Together, and many bites later, we perfected our indulgences to takeon the flavor profiles of the most iconic desserts, like fresh out the ovenchocolate chip cookies and melt-in-your-mouth glazed donuts. Our playful lineup of products is sold on Amazon and select smallretailers nationwide.

TRUWOMEN

Talkto us about the nutritional elements of the bar?

The protein bar aisle is crowded with bars full of lengthy and questionable ingredients. We wanted to make it easier for shoppers to feel proud of choosing our bars and sharing them with others, so we created a first-of-its-kind food category called Indulgent Nutrition™ which combines amazing taste with clean ingredients.

Our ingredients allow us to dream up healthyindulgences that are dairy-free, soy-free, gluten-free, non-GMO, and free ofsugar alcohols. These ingredients also allow us to maintaindesirable nutritional profiles, with around 200 calories and 12G of protein perbar. We really wanted to do the work for consumers, so that they could spend more time enjoying what’s under the wrapper rather than tryingto figure out what’s in it.

What'snext for TRUWOMEN?

Aside from our ability to quickly innovate and share new products, I am most excited about what we are doing with our business practices. It was important that we not only create a cleaner, healthier alternative for women to eat and share, but that we also practice better business by empowering women within the workplace.

We’re working to drive a new frontierof leadership for women - elevating and providing opportunities for them. From the women behind thecompany to the vendors we work with, TRUWOMEN supports female-founded,female-owned and female-managed businesses who also elevate women in theirrespective organizations. Our goal is to empower thisgeneration while inspiring the next.

Lia Ames

Quick 10 Interview With Miami Health & Wellness Entrepreneur Lia Ames

Growing up in developing countries, being active and eating healthy was just a way of life for Lia Ames. After settling in the states and enrolling at the University of Miami as an athlete, Ames has now gone on to launch one of the most recognizable South Florida meal delivery services - Lunchology. We caught up with Ames for a Quick 10 interview, but you can also follow her on Instagram - @lia.lunchology.

Tell us about yourself - where are you from and how did you find yourway to the 305?

I was originally born inMonrovia, Liberia to a mother who is Liberian and a father who is from LongIsland, New York. I had the pleasure of growing up a third-culture kid, livingall over the world in mostly “developing” nations.

My family moved to America in 2000so that my brother and I could get accustomed to the American culture andeventually go to college in the states. I made my way to sunny South Florida toattend and run Track & Field/Cross Country for the University of Miami andI never left. It's been my home ever since.

How did you get your start in the health and wellness industry? Did youalways want to be an entrepreneur?

I’ve been into athletics all mylife and was never raised on junk food - on the contrary, what was mostaccessible to us growing up in developing countries were fresh fruits andveggies and slow foods. For that reason, by circumstance, a healthy lifestylehas always been a part of who I am.

Growing up, I wasalways the kid trying to solve problems. Generating ideas, self-starting andbeing motivated to perform have always been strengths of mine. Moving forwardis my thing. I had the opportunity to work for two brilliant entrepreneurs; onein high-school and one right out of college. I never looked back afterthat.

Tell us a little bit about Lunchology. Why did you start Lunchology? Isthis your first project as an entrepreneur?

Lunchology was birthed from a need. In fact, at the time I was in needof healthy food made freshly for me. I was nine months pregnant and without theenergy to shop, prep, and cook my own meals, while preparing for my son andclosing down a venture that I had started one-year prior.

Prior to Lunchology, I had a company called Groutology that cleanedlarge scale, hard surfaces (tile, grout, carpet, etc.) with technology Isourced out of Arizona. It serviced large establishments like AMC Theaters,Moss Construction, Barry University, and many more commercial spaces. With eachnew venture, I have learned new ways to grow faster and become more efficient.

So what makes Lunchology different from all the other meal deliveryoptions?

Lunchology focuses on qualitymeals with flexible options to allow people to maintain eating our mealswithout getting bored. We specialize in modifying meals to fit people needs.

The client that uses Lunchologydoes not want repetitive meals delivered in bulk. They are people who value ahealthy lifestyle and want to create a better balance in their lives by usingour service to handle their meals, while they focus on managing their activedays.

We make fresh meals daily thatfit client requests, like “gluten-free” or “no seafood” and the food isdelivered daily at a time frame that works for them. Our goal is to makehealthy eating accessible so clients don’t make bad decisions when they findthemselves in a pinch.

Are you the chef? Do you have a say inthe menu? What are some of your favorite meals?

I am not the chef, just anoperator with a mission for a passion. We have a team of awesome chefs that puta lot of love into what they do. We also have the worlds most knowledgeable andenergetic nutritionist, Monica Auslander Moreno, who believes in well-balancedmeals that give to your productivity, rather than counting calories just toconform to the norm.

What is your favorite part about owning your business and being anentrepreneur?

I love to hear the testimonials about how Lunchology is making a difference in people’s everyday lives. We have worked hard to create a product that is not only useful for people to use, but it's intimate. We often get the chance to learn about what our clients are dealing with, it allows us to optimize the product to better fit each individual need. Being “in touch” makes me feel grounded.

What's the hardest part about owning your own business and startup life?

It's a constant balancing act. What we do doesn’t come with a blueprint to follow. So we have to make a lot of educated guesses when it comes to the business. It's fun but extremely challenging at times. I'm also a single mother, so finding the balance between my business, my baby (who are the same age) and personal goals is tough sometimes, but it's also doable.

What advice would you give someone looking to start their own business?

Of course, be passionate aboutwhat you do because that passion will be the thing that keeps you from strayingfrom the ultimate goal.

Find a good team, that rangesfrom cheerleaders to business mentors that push your limits, to support you.

Finally, be transparent. You’llneed this for your employees, your clients and yourself. People are morewilling to walk alongside you through the ups and downs when they believe youare trying your hardest to make a product that everyone can benefit from.

Let's talk mind & body - where do you like train?

Wow! How connected are the two!?I love a good run outside in the elements, especially a good downpour. But on aregular, I like to bounce around to some different gyms and studios.

Legacy Fit gives me a great bootcampfor me and my little one. Anatomy has an extremely challenging Mace class withGrant Weeditz, Train8Nine is in my neighborhood and through a CrossFit-likeworkout, helps me to incorporate weights (which kick my butt) in a quick, painful hour.

Do you practice mental health in youreveryday life?

Everyday! It's totally necessary for me in order to function with the challenges ofowning a business and being a mother. I have found over time that its never thesame practice. Sometimes it's working out, sometimes its travel, sometimes itsa good dinner and wine with friends. Whatever it is, I’ve learned to honor theneed however it shows up.

After her time as a student-athlete at the Univesity of Miami, Lia Ames launched one of the most popular South Florida meal delivery services - Lunchology.

Kangen Alkalized Water

Why You Should Be Drinking Kangen Alkalized Water

*This article was written and submitted by Miami fitness instructor Anthony Mendez.

Tap water and bottled water are popular choices, but there is a reason you should opt for Kangen alkalized water instead. Bottled water, for instance, may pose serious health issues due to the chemicals in the plastic containers which may leach out into the water. The use of BPA-free containers helps a little but still, there exist other chemicals which find their way to the water and your body.

On the other hand, tap water contains harmful contaminants that pose serious health issuesincluding causing cancer and complicating pregnancies. For the most part, tapwater is controlled in terms of the chemicals to be found in the water.

However, theselaws may sometimes be ignored as in the case of Florida. So far, Florida’s tapwater is ranked the worst. This is due to the contaminants found in the watersupply that exceeded the limits causing violations.  Chromium, TotalTrihalomethanes, radium, arsenic, uranium, thallium, and so many othercontaminants were found to be above the set legal limit

Kangen alkalizedwater, therefore, remains as the best alternative for its various benefitswhich are:

Itshealing powers

Kangen alkalizedwater has some proven health benefits such as deactivating pepsin to counteracid reflex, helping with blood flow, curing psoriasis, diabetes and helpingpeople with high cholesterol levels aiding weight loss. The one that carriesthe day, according to alkalized water proponents, is that it can cure cancer. To support this, cancer cells survive in acidic environments which is whyalkalized water becomes a cure due to its high alkaline pH. The water alsoreduces inflammation and improves the effectiveness of some chemotherapy drugs.

Balancingthe body’s pH

The body does agood job marinating the acid-alkaline balance but sometimes due to the foods weeat and the lifestyle we choose, the acidity level may rise affecting thisbalance. Alkalized water, whose normal pH. is 8 or 9, works to maintain balanceshould the body fail, by neutralizing the acidity.

Itis an antioxidant

Free radicals fromtoxic substances put the body at risk by weakening the immune system leaving itvulnerable to illnesses. Kangen alkalized water, therefore, helps boost theimmune system as it contains anti-oxidants which combat these radicals, unlikeoxidants which strengthen these radical risking your health.

Helpsthe detox process

Naturally, thebody removes acidic waste to cleanse the body but it also receives a boost fromdetox diets. The diets highly recommend drinking alkalized water for itsability to neutralize acidity and remove the toxins from the cells and tissues.

Itis good for cleaning food

It is a healthypractice to always wash your vegetables and fruits before use. It protects youfrom bacteria passed on from the many people who come into contact with thefood. But when you use Kangen water, you do more than just to kill germs.Kangen alkalized water helps remove pesticide remnants which could causecancer, affect the nervous system and even the reproduction process. Alkalizedwater, with high pH of 11.5 saves you from such adverse effects of pesticides

It is now clearwhy it is important to drink and use alkalized water to maintain good health.Kangen water, in addition to these benefits, is certified and the only medicalgrade water which serves as an anti-inflammatory agent, detoxifier and anantioxidant.

Tap water and bottled water are popular choices, but there is a reason you should opt for Kangen alkalized water instead.
