After months of closure, Sweat440 is reopening the doors to three of their South Florida locations - South Beach, Coral Gables, and Brickell - in 2021 under new health and safety guidelines.
Your favorite “always on time, can’t use Miami traffic as an excuse because the next class starts in 10 minutes” studio - Sweat440 - is reopening their South Beach (January 2, 2021), Coral Gables (January 9, 2021), and Brickell (January 16, 2021) locations after closing their doors in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
So what has Sweat440 been up to since you’ve last dropped in for one of their popular 40-minute express sweats? Quite a lot actually.
“After our initial closure in mid-March, we launched a daily email campaign that sent In-Home Sweat440 style workouts with videos and instructions to all our members,” said Sweat440 Chief Operating Officer, Matt Miller. “Recently we have taken Sweat440 outdoors with a class series in both South Beach and Doral Yard. These workouts are body weight and band only, instructor led, and socially distanced.”
So what can you expect when the doors reopen? Well first things first. If you’re dropping in to the South Beach location you might want to get there early for your first visit back - they relocated upstairs in the same building.

“Our address is still 1916 Bay Rd., however we will be taking over the upstairs space which will feature a full studio redesign, new "blue room" lighting system, upgraded bathrooms, and an extra 230 square feet of usable workout space for increased social distancing,” stated Miller. “Additionally, all our studios will now feature a self-check in kiosk system that will be supported by our new proprietary mobile phone application.”
Sweat440 isn't taking any chances when it comes to COVID-19 and has implemented a ton of new changes to their studios to keep them safe and healthy for guests.
If you ask us, that’s pretty thorough. It’s great to see gyms like Sweat440 and others take the responsible approach to the pandemic while still providing their services to members.
“2021 will be a bounce back year for Sweat440 as we look to restart the rapid expansion we had planned before the pandemic hit,” said Miller. “Look for several more Sweat440 studios to open up both in neighboring South Florida communities and across the country. More details to come soon.”
And we’ll have them right here on StayFit305.com

At Float Plus, located in West Palm Beach, you can experience REST via float tanks that are filled with over a thousand pounds of magnesium sulfate, also known as Epsom salt. The salinity is as dense as the Dead Sea’s allowing the body to effortlessly float. The float tanks are filled with approximately ten inches of water and the water temperature is equivalent to one’s skin’s surface, 93.5 degrees Fahrenheit, making you feel weightless and one with the water. This was my first floating experience and I was looking forward to the deprivation of stimuli for a change and curious about its overall effectiveness.
There are so many ways in which we try to de-stress and unplug from the world: meditation, long walks, exercise, breathing techniques; however, for some, including myself, it’s difficult to completely “shut the brain off” despite these attempts.
Like the body, the brain needs to REST, or Restricted Environmental Stimulus Therapy that is. This form of therapy involves taking away as many stimuli as possible and in this particular case through floating.
Enter Float Plus - located in West Palm Beach, you can experience REST via float tanks that are filled with over a thousand pounds of magnesium sulfate, also known as Epsom salt.
I was given earplugs and instructions on how to utilize the controls for lighting and music. Once you step inside the tank and close the lid, the healing begins. Initially, my senses were firing off and in overdrive. I was trying to get used to the water and its buoyancy while acclimating to the fact that I was about to experience no external stimuli, sans clothing. Once I shut off the music and lights, I allowed myself to take in my surroundings. After about 15 minutes, I settled into a deeply relaxed state, floating in complete darkness, silence, and utter stillness which brought me to the point where I could hear my own heart beating. The hour went by way too fast.
Following my session, I sat with owner and Maryland native Philip Nuttle to discuss what led him to open Float Plus. A former USTA tennis player, Nuttle was well aware of the importance of restorative conditioning. When he relocated to South Florida, his longtime, childhood friend and ultra-marathon runner came to visit. During one of his visits, he asked Nuttle where the closest floating place was as he needed to go in preparation for an upcoming race. Nuttle had no idea what he was talking about. They eventually found one in Deerfield Beach and from there, Float Plus was born.
Nuttle felt this was the type of place residents in Palm Beach needed to find an escape from the outside world. He flew to California to do some research on various floating tanks, check out floating places in the California area to gather ideas from a logistical and operation standpoint, and chat with owners to obtain their perspective and guidance. He brought those ideas home and on this fall, Float Plus held its grand opening.
Nuttle expressed that floating provides several modalities that one can tap into such as visualization, in which athletes use in preparation for a big game or competition. On a physical level, floating produces positive hormonal shifts such as increasing serotonin levels and decreasing the production of cortisol as well as improve overall sleep quality, skin condition, mood enhancement, and the list goes on. Clinical studies have also shown that floating helps those who suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
The majority of Nuttle’s clientele consists of women, veterans, yogis, athletes, first responders, and corporate leaders. Many utilize floating to prepare for a game, a big presentation, life events, or to purely escape the everyday stressors of life. Professional basketball player for the Golden State Warriors Steph Curry has proclaimed to be an avid floater and raved how floatation therapy helps him with recovery, long road trips, and visualization.
Float Plus also has a sound therapy room, a sauna, and private showers for an all-around restorative experience. It is also is the only floating business that offers 45-minute float sessions rather than the typical hour, and an open float for those not comfortable being fully enclosed in a tank. To learn more about the benefits of floating, visit their website, https://floatplus.net/.
Body Fit Training is the newest studio in Fort Lauderdale, having officially opened last month. In each 50-minute class, members will experience proven training techniques for fast conditioning results. The Fort Lauderdale location is the second Body Fit Training franchise in the United States and the first on the east coast.
Body Fit Training is the newest studio in Fort Lauderdale, having officially opened last month. In each 50-minute class, members will experience proven training techniques for fast conditioning results. The Fort Lauderdale location is the second Body Fit Training franchise in the United States and the first on the east coast.
With a background in strength and conditioning, studio owner Andy Hanley decided to get into group fitness with Body Fit Training. Originally from Ireland, Hanley's brother owns two Body Fit franchises in Australia, where the concept was created.
"What drew me to the company was that it was a very well-considered approach to training, anchored to scientific loss," said Hanley. “There is constant variety but there is also consistency that builds familiarity and allows you to learn the workouts and patterns.”
The Body Fit system is made up of 10 programs, some more aerobic based, some more endurance based, all done within 4 to 6-week training blocks. Within those blocks, members are encouraged to progressively overload, meaning that they are gradually increasing the weight, frequency, or number of repetitions week over week. According to Hanley, this is as close as the average person will get to training as professional athletes do.
There are two floor coaches at all times to assist with form and offer direction. The technology at Body Fit Training is meant to enhance the experience, with heart rate statistics quantifying how hard everyone is working and screens showing the moves on the walls.
Body Fit workouts are designed to be high-frequency, with members attending up to six times a week. The rest and recovery are built into the workouts each week, making it easier to maintain training consistency and also making it more sustainable.
Body Fit also runs challenges three times a year to help members get extra dialed into their goals. While some challenges are based on body composition, others are based on strength gains and personal records. Challenges include detailed nutritional plans and specific goals, and of course, there are winners.
Members can manage their workout schedules and payments from the Body Fit app. Memberships also include access to BFT2U for virtual workouts. This allows members to do a similar session at home or while traveling. The workouts will have the same theme as the in-person class that day, whether it be power or endurance, and there is the same work to rest ratios. The app also gives you the option to do the workout bodyweight or with resistance bands.
Of course, BodyFit is complying with all current COVID-19 guidelines and best practices in studio and they invite you to come in and try a class. Check them out at 408 N Andrews Ave in Fort Lauderdale. For more information, head to their website or find them on Instagram at @bodyfit_fortlauderdale.

Sarah Sutin wants to teach you the world of aerial art. Owner and performer at Alchemy Circus, Sutin is also the main instructor and has a private rig with silks, straps, and a Lyra hoop. Sutin is a professional aerialist and flying trapeze artist and has been teaching and performing for over five years all over the world.
Sarah Sutin's journey as a professional aerialist and flying trapeze artist has taken her around the world, to resorts and hotels in the Dominican Republic, Turks and Caicos, Mexico, Canada, and back again, before settling in Martha's Vineyard.
It was there in Martha's Vineyard that Sutin was inspired to bring the magical world of aerial art to the masses. Now, Sutin and her team of high-flying, mind-bending, aerial artists are making Alchemy Circus accessible to all, no-experience required. Alchemy means a "power or process that changes or transforms something in a mysterious or impressive way," and that is exactly what Alchemy Circus encompasses.
After fine-tuning her offering to local in Martha's Vineyard, Sutin has brought Alchemy Circus to Miami, complete with a private rig, silks, straps, and a Lyra hoop. So what can guests expect? Exactly what you might imagine.
Sessions are 60 minutes in length and begin with a 10 to 15 minute warm up with stretching and mobility. From there, guests work on the apparatus of their choice, with the class structure pending experience level, comfortability, and skill progression. While beginners might work on technique, strength and basics, more advanced individuals will be challenged with more dynamic work. The session comes to a close with a cool down, some stretches, and aerial yoga if you're still craving more.
In addition to private, group, and kids classes, Alchemy Circus offers entertainment for corporate events.
Alchemy Circus is continuing to grow and expand their offering to include trampoline classes in the future. Classes start at $75 for one class or $350 for a 5-pack. Kids classes are $65 per class. For more information, visit https://www.alchemycircusmv.com/
It’s been a while since most Miamians have hit the club, but the pounding music and neon lights of Rukus Cycling in Coral Gables will make riders feel like they’ve stepped into a super-healthy discotec.
It’s been a while since most Miamians have hit the club, but the pounding music and neon lights of Rukus Cycling in Coral Gables will make riders feel like they’ve stepped into a super-healthy discotec.
The cycling studio on Giralda Ave has only been open for about a month, owner Vanessa Bauer said, but it’s already gaining a following. With five instructors and multiple classes each day, Rukus gives riders plenty of opportunities to get their sweat on and patrons will leave sweaty.
Rukus offers two class types, Prime and Surge, to fit into individuals’ busy schedules. Prime classes, said Bauer, are 45 minutes long and feature lots of intervals, while Surge classes are just as challenging but condensed into 30 minutes. The studio also offers a breakout room separate from the main class studio which hosts a few bikes and a monitor and allows riders to take pre-recorded classes at any time or even stream programs from Rukus’ partner, Peloton.
Bauer, a former professional dancer, said she got hooked on Rukus after visiting their studio in Orlando with a friend and decided she had to bring one to Miami. The Coral Gables location, she said, is the first franchise in South Florida.
New patrons get their first ride free at the studio, and there are a variety of membership options to choose from, ranging from $68 per month for four rides monthly to $168 for unlimited rides with added benefits like unlimited Peloton screenings and retail discounts.
The studio is taking COVID precautions, which are displayed for patrons on a standing sign in the studio lobby. The sign indicates that bikes are spread apart, an air purification system is in use, and that Rukus gives riders the option to have shoes and gear pre-staged for a contactless pickup before class.
Amenities include lockers, men’s and women’s restrooms and showers, a filtered water station, cycling shoes, towels, and drinks available for purchase. There is also a retail section selling branded merch, and the studio is a Lululemon affiliate.
Riders will definitely work up a sweat during the classes, and for competitive individuals, a screen at the front of the classroom displays rider stats. The music is poppy and upbeat, and instructors mix in climbs, sprints, and upper-body work for a well-rounded experience. The room is even surrounded by color-changing lights, which almost (keyword almost) makes riders forget they’re working out.

F45 Upper Eastside is a boutique fitness franchise that is sweeping South Florida. With nearly 20 locations in the market, it's a must-try experience.
All good things start with the name. For F45, the F stands for functional training, and 45 is the total workout time. But 45 minutes is all you're going to need at F45 Upper East Side.
The massively popular franchise, which to our estimate is approaching 20 locations in the South Florida market, is a mix of circuit and HIIT style training focused on everyday movement. The franchise seems to have struck a cord with group fitness goers, with Instagram users sharing their latest sweat.
Designed to unify the muscle groups of the body to improve performance, the F45 programming mix boasts 37 different workouts, using a combination of over 2,700 exercises so members are always experiencing a different workout. Some days feature more cardio, while others are centered around resistance training.

The YMCA of South Florida will offer swim lessons and water safety education to the children and families in the Sistrunk community, at the new L.A. Lee YMCA/Mizell Community Center.
Did you know that three children die every day as a result of drowning? If that wasn't horrifying enough, Florida leads the country in drowning deaths of children ages 1-4 years. In a state with over 8,000 lakes, miles of ocean front, and what seems like a pool in every backyard, something needs to be done.
Thankfully, Drowning Prevention is of the highest concern for the South Florida YMCA, and the new L.A. Lee YMCA/Mizell Community Center opening in Fort Lauderdale next year, will offer water safety and swim lessons to the community.
“Drowning deaths are the leading cause of death among small children, but we know drowning is preventable with swim lessons,” said Sheryl A. Woods, President & CEO of the YMCA of South Florida. “The Y is dedicated to making sure that all children have the opportunity to learn how to swim and that all families are educated about how to keep their loved ones safe in and around water – regardless of their race or ethnicity, or where they live.”
With the new pool at the L.A. Lee YMCA/Mizell Community Center in the Sistrunk community more people will be able to learn to swim, be safe and have the opportunity to enjoy water activities, with the goal of reducing the number of drownings in South Florida.
Here’s why it matters:
In addition to offering life-saving swim lessons and drowning prevention programs, the L.A. Lee YMCA/Mizell Community Center will also provide fitness and lap swim programming for all ages, including active older adults. For additional information, contact the YMCA at 954-334-9622, or visit ymcasouthflorida.org.
