The open-air tent at Legacy Fit Wynwood allows guests to train without wearing a mask while maintaining a 10ft social distance.
When Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez reversed his rollback Emergency Order that would have closed gyms once again during the COVID-19 pandemic, instead requiring gym guests to wear a mask at all times, Legacy Fit Owner Manning Sumner knew he needed to do something.
RELATED Miami-Dade Gyms to Remain Open with Agreed Upon Compromise
"We are going to do whatever we can to stay open, and do what's required," said Sumner. "As a business owner, you have to go the extra mile for members to feel comfortable coming back to your gym."
So how exactly did Sumner go the extra mile to keep guests walking through the door? Due in large part to the size of Legacy Fit's footprint in Wynwood, Sumner ordered the build of a temporary hurricane grade open-air tent allowing guests to train outdoors 10ft apart, thus not requiring a mask.
"You can choose to be a victim of your circumstances or choose to figure it out," said Sumner. "We have space, to provide our members the opportunity to not wear a mask, so then can stay 10ft apart, and go as hard as they want."
The tent is a 2,800 square-foot space where Sumner and the Legacy Fit team moved equipment spaced 10 feet apart where they can continue creating the coveted experience guests crave when stopping by Legacy Fit.
"The gym business is a numbers game, and when you're at 50% capacity, you got to get creative and get people in the doors," said Sumner. "At the end of the day, the virus isn't going anywhere. It's here to stay. We have to start living with the virus, and assess your personal situation."

iCRYO is a new health and wellness franchise offering a cool, holistic approach to overall body wellness and recovery in South Florida.
A new health and wellness franchise offers a cool, holistic approach to overall body wellness and recovery. iCRYO, which first opened in 2015 and is headquartered in Houston, is making its mark on the cryotherapy industry and quickly growing in popularity with 80 new locations planned to open throughout the U.S.
Cryotherapy originated in Japan in the late 1970s and was developed by a rheumatologist as a way to treat muscle and joint inflammation. Over the years it was discovered that using this rehabilitative cold therapy was also effective in treating other ailments and disorders such as migraines, anxiety, insomnia, and various skin conditions.
Now, South Floridians can enjoy the benefits of cryotherapy and other holistic body recovery services at iCRYO. iCRYO Fort Lauderdale is family-owned and run by Phil Gatti, Nancy Bartlett, and their son Chris Gatti. Both father and son are former athletes and quite experienced in the health and fitness industry. Nancy, who runs the accounting and bookkeeping side of the company, was also a former, competitive bodybuilder during a time when women were just beginning to enter the once male-dominated, fitness-enthused world.
Phil, a former minor league baseball player, opened his first gym in the mid-1980s in New York and remained in the industry for years eventually transitioning into personal training, fitness consulting, and nutrition counseling for people from all walks of life from athletes to seniors. His son Chris was a college football player and, like many athletes, suffered a sports-related injury. Both knew the importance of body recovery and overall wellbeing and decided to go into business together with a goal of combining health and fitness with a holistic approach. iCRYO made perfect sense.
The recovery and wellness center offers a variety of services Their whole body cryotherapy is among their most popular. This type of therapy sets off the body’s natural fight or flight response to accelerate recovery and decrease inflammation throughout the body. While in the chamber, you have the option to listen to music, move around, or stand still and meditate. Following 2-3 minutes exposure of extreme cold temperature, you will experience not only a rush of energy, but muscle/joint pain relief, and several other positive physical and mental benefits.
If you’re not yet sure about braving the cold, you have the option of trying out their localized cryotherapy, which concentrates on specific parts of the body where you’re experiencing pain or discomfort while reaping the benefits of improved skin conditions and minimized appearance of scarring. The same goes for their cryo facials which bring the addition of tightened skin, reduced fine lines, improved collagen production, and migraine relief.
Following these chilly services, you can warm up in their Infrared Sauna. This safe and effective therapy utilizes Infrared heat, the non-visible part of the sun’s spectrum that allows you to enjoy the benefits of the sun, without exposure to harmful ultraviolet rays. Regular visits of 30 to 40-minute sessions can release harmful toxins, increase blood circulation, burn calories, improve overall skin tone, and much more.
If you’re looking for some relaxation in your recovery journey at iCRYO and enjoy the benefits of receiving a massage, you must try their compression therapy. This system concentrates on your legs, hips, or arms using attachments that release compressed air to massage these targeted areas. Benefits of this service include the elimination of sore muscles, blood circulation improvement, reduction in lactic acid, and overall muscle recovery.
Another non-invasive service offered at iCRYO is body sculpting. During one of these slimming sessions, fat cells are destroyed and flushed out through your lymphatic system resulting in fat loss and improved skin appearance that take place almost immediately and over time depending on the individual. Free consultations are offered to find out which body sculpting plan is best for you.
If you are looking to boost your immune system, IV Infusion therapy is another service you can enjoy. With over half a dozen IV cocktails offered, iCRYO’s specially-formulated infusions and vitamin shots assist with strengthening your immune system, anti-aging, improving athletic performance, alleviating hangovers, reducing fatigue/low energy, and much more. iCRYO works with its own medical director to deliver the best source of vitamins, minerals, and hydration for maximum absorption.
Miami residents will soon be able to enjoy the many services and benefits at iCRYO as the Gatti family plans to open another location in the Brickell area later this year. Once you visit, you’ll never want to chill anywhere else.

Glutehouse in Brickell is Miami's hottet lower-body focused fitness concept.
Leg day is every day at Glutehouse – Miami’s latest fitness destination. The brand-new micro gym concept located inside Society Fitness is focused entirely on training legs, not a bad idea for a city that loves posting “suns out, buns out” Instagram pics.
RELATED Perfect Your Perky Peach with 3 Glute Activation Exercises
The concept is simple really. Each week there are two different circuit-training workouts – A and B. Workout A is offered Monday – Wednesday, and Workout B is offered Thursday – Sunday. The idea is that guests and members go through each workout once.
Here’s where it gets interesting, the circuit is “always-on” for guests. The entire circuit is five stations, 50 minutes in length, with one person starting every ten minutes.
RELATED 3 Booty Building Exercises You’re Forgetting to Do
“It’s a supplemental program to what you already do - train at your gym, and come to Glutehouse for your lower-body training,” said Glutehouse founder, Adam Becker, who has been working on the concept for nearly two years.
Becker is also the Co-Owner of Society Fitness, a popular Brickell hotspot for HIIT training. The launch of “Glute Camp,” a lower-body focused class offered at Society Fitness since early 2019, is what inspired Becker to design an entire concept dedicated to training legs.
RELATED Mel G Shares 5 Booty Building Exercises You Can Do Anywhere
What makes Glutehouse even better is the affordable price point. Glutehouse fills a price void between group fitness and personal training, often too big of a leap for the average consumer. But that price point comes with a catch … sort of. The circuit is monitored and assisted by an on-floor trainer who can coach and answer questions, but the exercises are preloaded each week onto a proprietary app that members can watch ahead of time and come prepared. In short, less personal training, more affordability.
“The app demonstrates movements, reps, instructors, and what and how you should be feeling,” explains Becker. “The app becomes your ‘personal trainer’ and the floor coach guides you through your workout.”

Glutehouse is currently in soft launch for $99/month, and expected to open with regular hours starting in September.

Gyms across South Florida are starting to open back up after COVID-19 quarantine, and owners are sharing their experience so far.
The South Florida fitness scene is starting to open back up, and the results are … positive with a splash of hope. Before we dive in to the now, let’s set the table.
After 78 days of closure, Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez announced on June 4th that gyms in the county could resume operations starting June 8th, while adhering to certain levels of guidelines and restrictions. That announcement came over a week after Broward gyms and fitness centers were given permission to resume business on May 26th.
Throughout quarantine, we heard firsthand from gym owners like Jessica Bergman of Downtown Strength and Conditioning, share stories of pivoting business models that resulted in success.
“We were thriving in this online environment although it wasn’t anything we ever thought about or even knew would be to do,” wrote Bergman in a May article here on STAY FIT 305. “We learned how to coach to remote athletes of every level, we learned about how to be better trainers, deliver cues, and “coach” people who weren’t physically next to us.”
RELATED 3 South Florida Gym Owners Share Life During the Quarantine
But as Gimenez spoke the words all gym owners were waiting to hear, a question popped into everyone’s mind – would guests and members return? Bergman and other owners knew changes needed to be made to accommodate the guidelines but to adapt to the behavior changes that were undoubtedly coming.
“First, we had decided to add classes almost every hour of the day,” said Bergman. “As soon as our morning class schedule went off successfully on Day 1, and the new program format worked, we realized this was going to be OK.”
That sentiment is shared amongst many gym owners and operators throughout Miami-Dade and Broward county.
“While legally we can only operate at half capacity, the love and support to get back into the studio have been 100%,” said Aurea Dempsey, Director of Marketing and Operations at SOL Yoga. “We had no idea how people would react and if they changed behaviors. Your living room is never going to replace human connection with others. Our new clients and returning members have been very patient – classes are selling out and selling out quickly.”
Patience is a common theme gym owners have noticed in their returning members and guests. In the current coronavirus climate, patience seems to be lacking, but not when it comes to the gym.
“Everyone has been kind, patient, and caring and it has made the class experience wonderful,” said Adam Becker, Co-Owner of Society Fitness in Brickell.
RELATED Kamps Fitness to Remain Closed Amid Gym Reopenings in Miami
Francine Acevedo-McCaughan, Owner of Code of Life on Key Biscayne shared similar thoughts, “We had to move the machines around in the studio in order to achieve six feet social distancing, and the clients actually really love it and say it looks even better than we had it before. Clients seem open-minded and amenable to all our new normal guidelines. Quite frankly, I think they are very appreciative that we are taking this seriously.”
So, as members and guests continue to make the decision best for them on whether to return to the gym or not, owners are remaining positive and hopeful.
“We hope to continue to see our gym and our industry recover and remember that even when the world outside our walls may be in a bit of a strange place; we are still the happy place for many of us,” said Bergman.
RELATED This Miami Gym Owner is Lobbying Congress to Include Fitness in a Coronavirus Bailout
Jessica Bergman, owner of Downtown Strength and Conditioning in Miami, shares the story of her gym's journey through COVID-19.
On March 18th Downtown Strength and Conditioning had to temporarily close its doors. Like many other fitness facilities, we quickly scrambled to figure out how we would approach this unprecedented time not just in the world but now in our gym and fitness community.
On the eve of our closure, our coaching staff met at the gym. I gathered our team of trainers and we brainstormed. We shared ideas on how we could keep our community fit, engaged, and positive through this pandemic. I knew the time to react would be of the essence, we had to have a plan for our members to keep them training with us; but how?
A few short hours later we had filmed several hours of content and launched a YouTube channel. Just like that, we had begun to navigate the world of online content without even realizing it. We shared our new channel with our members and I went to sleep, not sure what tomorrow would bring or the next day or the next. It was scary. When I woke up our channel had over 100 subscribers. Whoa, maybe this online thing could work.
In the coming days, I began to evaluate how we could reach our community moving forward. Would we be closed for weeks or months? We weren’t sure, so I looked at various platforms to deliver classes and content. It was at that moment that I realized we didn’t need to figure out how to “adapt” because we already were! The Pivot was inevitable if we planned to survive this.
In the coming days, we would begin to launch a full IGTV/IG Live program jam-packed with multiple daily live classes filled with our normal Crossfit + HIIT Bootcamp programming as well as weekly Yoga and Mobility. We realized that we could reach people at home, not just our members but people from all over the world. Our coaching team rose to the occasion and came together to lead classes online.
This “online thing” was working. We had new followers and exposure and started to say, what other content could we offer? How could we keep it going, growing and branch out to other areas that matter to the fitness community. People were home, how could DTSC enrich their at quarantine experience?
We began to offer healthy cooking demos, IG Live Q&A’s with industry experts, and collaboration workouts with vendors and partners; suddenly in a time of isolation we felt more connected than ever to other people! We had become a brick and mortar gym who had found itself delivering a complete schedule full of content.
Somewhere through the many days of burpees in my living room, and jumping lunges on my balcony, it hit me. I realized the closure that once had our team in a panic, had turned out to have a silver lining after all. We were thriving in this online environment although it wasn’t anything we ever thought about or even knew would be to do. We learned how to coach to remote athletes of every level, we learned about how to be better trainers, deliver cues, and “coach” people who weren’t physically next to us.
In the online world, we had the chance to workout with friends who had moved out of Miami, “workout” next to our family in other countries, deliver content that could be done anywhere with little to no equipment, and so much more. We had broken beyond our four walls and exposed Downtown Strength and Conditioning to an entire global fitness community online! We were excited; I was excited!
After the first few weeks of delivering and perfecting our online platform, we were in a rhythm. We saw members and “strangers” alike taking a class. We had people tuning in for workouts and additional content. This was great, but as the days became weeks and soon months we had to continue to evolve to ensure we would have a gym to come back to when the time came. The efforts to keep our members engaged wasn’t over, in fact, it had just begun.
Like many facilities, we had lent out equipment from our physical space to ensure our membership base had some help to train at home. We began to offer additional services complimentary as a value add, our in house nutrition coach offered nutrition counseling; which was especially valuable during this time at home.
We began to offer custom programming and remote 1-1 coaching with our trainers. Each of our trainers became responsible for a subgroup of members to give them weekly challenges, check-ins, and hold each other accountable. Each week I sent a weekly email update to our members filled with thoughts, updates, content, schedule, highlights, and more. I looked around and realized our members and team were more engaged than ever, another silver lining; we were getting in shape and eating better during quarantine!
Community is a relative term in the world of fitness. We make our “community." This pandemic taught us a lot, including that our community is bigger than our gyms, or style of training. Here in Miami with so many amazing gyms, training methodologies and programming we tend to keep to ourselves as it relates to our “type” of gym, training style and company we keep. That was all different now.
The pandemic unified us. Suddenly gyms who were “competitors” aligned, people who never tried Yoga took an online class, coaches, training and gym owners who had never spoken became fast friends. Personally I used this as an opportunity to be a mentor and a mentee alike. My gym owner peers and trainers taught me to be a better owner and trainer and vice versa. Another silver lining emerged, Unity among our diverse fitness community both near and far was apparent.
As many of us as owners and coaches begin to prepare our studios and gyms for a day when we can all train “together” again, I am reminded that we were never really apart. We emerge from this pandemic and mandated closure with new knowledge, new approaches to our training and programming, and how we connect with one another. Through adversity there is growth, and many silver linings to even the most difficult of circumstances; we just have to look for it. On that note, we will meet you at the Bar(bell) soon!
Some of your favorite JetSet Pilates studios are rebranding to be the new Tremble, including the Wynwood and Sunset Harbour locations.
Some of your favorite JetSet Pilates studios are under new ownership and rebranding to be the new Tremble. This rebrand includes the locations in Coral Gables, Wynwood, North Miami, and Sunset Harbour.
Aryan Rashed, prior JetSet co-owner and now Tremble CEO and owner, has been busy using the downtime of the quarantine to work through all the details of this rebrand as well as make improvements to the overall customer experience so that current and future members have a refreshed studio to come back to.
In addition to repainting studios and putting up new signs, Rashed is also taking her time picking out all of the little details that will complete Tremble. It is clear that Rashed has put a lot of thought into the name of the studio and the meaning behind the brand.
Mostly obviously Tremble comes from the physical element of trembling and shaking, and anyone who has taken a Pilates class before knows that you are focusing on working through the shake during your time there. Within the logo itself is a trembling B, meant to represent the body trembling.
Through trembling can also come a transformation.
"Tremble can be a positive opportunity and a chance to be able to grow," said Rashed. "Fear is an opportunity for change."
The irony of this new brand launch, the meaning behind its name, and the current global pandemic is not lost on Rashed. She is embracing the opportunity for change and making the most of what is a very unconventional time.
"The timing is unbelievable because we are living in a time of uncertainty," Rashed said.
Tremble is also an acronym for the studio's core values: Together, Resilience, Energy, More, Bold, Leadership, Everyday.
With all of this meaning, Rashed hopes to strengthen Tremble's current tribe of members as well as speak to new individuals in the community.
Adding to the class selection that members had come to know, Tremble has been listening to feedback regarding the format and length of classes and will introduce 45 and 60 minutes classes, and begin to focus on the upper or lower body on different days.
Join the Tremble Tribe online this month as they launch a new virtual program with prerecorded classes and moves you can do from home. A portion of the class costs will be going back to COVID-related charities.

Code of Life is a Pilates studio located in the heart of Key Biscayne in Miami and recently celebrated its grand reopening.
In order to live by the code of life, one must live a balanced lifestyle. The owner of Code of Life Pilates Studio strongly believes in this, hence the name. The trendy Pilates studio, located in the heart of Key Biscayne, recently had its grand reopening, celebrating a new business venture for the new owner, Francine Acevedo-McCaughan, also known as Perfectly Pilates on social media.
In other words, "Code of Life means an opportunity to start anew every day and achieve balance in your mind, body, and spirit,” says Acevedo-McCaughan. She points out that the code of life is not about perfection but about trying your best at anything you do with patience, acceptance, and peace.
Acevedo-McCaughan has always been passionate about the fitness world. She grew up as an athlete, playing soccer and cheerleading through college. Although Acevedo-McCaughan took on a career as an entertainment lawyer in Los Angeles, her passion for fitness led her to continue cheerleading and playing recreational soccer.
When she tore her ACL, Acevedo-McCaughan started rehab for her knee and Pilates was incorporated as part of her rehab, which reminded her of her love for Pilates. She later decided to go to Spain to rediscover herself. When she moved to Miami afterward, Acevedo-McCaughan started working for both Code of Life and Pilates ProWorks, she eventually completed her comprehensive teacher training, worked her way up at Code of Life until she became its owner.
“Anyone who tries Code of Life will gain peace of mind, a happy body, and an elevated spirit," said Acevedo-McCaughan.
In order to take a class, one must be present to achieve awareness and coordination of one’s breathing with movement, which leads to decrease stress and an elevated spirit. Following along the instructor’s cues and playing uplifting tunes brings positive energy into the room, allowing clients to disconnect from the outside world and focus on the task at hand. This also teaches the client to live a more focused and intentional life outside of the studio.
As beneficial as it is to the mind, clients also benefit physically from Pilates, a low-impact workout that is safe for everyone and one that is sure to strengthen and lengthen your muscles making you feel longer, stronger, and confident. It is safe for anyone to try and highly recommended to those suffering from chronic low back pain or any other injuries.
At Code of Life, the instructors emphasize moving with awareness, intention, and control, always following the Principles of Pilates while adding “creative and challenging variations to original exercises”. Code of Life offers private sessions and group Pilates classes, involving traditional Pilates, “Cardio” Pilates on the CoreAlign Machine, and “Hardcore” Pilates, which is an athletic type of Pilates and the most popular class.
Having a solid Pilates background and experience has helped Acevedo-McCaughan promote Pilates any way she can. She has taught in different cities around the US, and has appeared on TV shows such as, “Live It Up With Donna Drake”, “Entertainment Tonight”, and “Off The Wire”. She is also an Instagram ambassador for Tavi Noir grip socks and Carbon38 Activewear, which has allowed her to partner up with them to host events at Code of Life, including Bro-lates for men and a Back-To-School Teen class. She is planning to host a Mat Pilates class and Beach Clean-Up in partnership with Fill-A-Bag in Key Biscayne, along with other events happening in the near future.
As the community in Key Biscayne is very strong, the studio wants to be known to all, including those living right outside of the island and tourists outside of Miami looking to check off the top places to visit when they come to the city. In fact, Code of Life has been acclaimed as a must-go-to studio by clients from all over the world. Being located in the Key makes the drive over the bridge from Miami into the island an enjoyable one full of contentment and relaxation.
As Acevedo-McCaughan put it, “Code of Life is a destination! It’s Pilates in paradise!”
Ultimately, Acevedo-McCaughan wants to share her love for Pilates and its benefits with the world. “This life is analogous to Pilates itself, where every exercise is trial and error to achieve, but persistence and determination help you to achieve your goal.”
This is what Code of Life provides to all who have tried it and continue to attend. Check their schedule on Mindbody, ClassPass, or the Code of Life app, or for more information, check out the studio on Instagram @code.of.life, and @perfectlypilates to learn more about Francine Acevedo-McCaughan.

ROAM Fitness, located at Baltimore/Washington International airport, is an airport gym that takes all the hassle out of working out while traveling.
Working out while traveling can take serious planning and coordination. Not only do you need to find a place to workout - maybe your hotel gym, maybe a local gym or studio - but you also need to remember to pack workout clothes and shoes, and then figure out what to do with them once they are all sweaty.
Enter ROAM Fitness, an airport gym that takes all the hassle out of working out while traveling. Their current location is past security in Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport outside of Baltimore, MD, and it has been open for three years now.
ROAM Fitness was founded in 2015 by Ty Manegold and Cynthia Sandall. The two frequent fliers didn't like how travel days negatively impacted their bodies. The company was created because they believe that travel days don't have to compromise our health or our exercise routines.
While it may be small, ROAM Fitness has thought of everything you might need if you are trying to stretch your legs or burn off some extra energy before or after your flight. Need clothes? Lululemon sports bras, t-shirts, shorts, and leggings are available for women to borrow, while shorts and t-shirts are available for men. Need shoes? They offer Brooks sneakers for rental. Socks are the only thing you would need to either provide or purchase from ROAM.
The gym facilities feature a cardio area with a variety of equipment including treadmills, stationary bikes, an elliptical, and even a rower. There are two benches and free weights up to 50 pounds in a strength training section of the gym. Lastly, there is an open area with mats, medicine balls, TRX bands, resistance bands, blocks, and foam rollers, for stretching or miscellaneous workouts.
And when you are done working out, your day pass also includes 15 minutes of shower time. The private shower rooms include towel service and Malin+Goetz products. Visitors can also freshen up at ROAM's vanity area with hairdryers, dry shampoo, deodorant, and other thoughtful amenities.
For additional features that you would definitely want your airport gym to have, ROAM Fitness allows you to keep track of your flight time while you are working out with an in-studio display board. They also have lockers large enough to fit your carry-on luggage with power outlets to charge your devices while exercising.
In case you want to do some shopping, ROAM Fitness is an authorized lululemon and Brooks Running retailer, and they also sell a variety of drinks and snacks to round out your healthy airport excursion.
ROAM Fitness offers a day pass for just $25 and it is good from 24 hours of checking into the gym. Members can use their day passes at multiple locations as long as it is within the 24-hour window. If you have an awkward travel schedule or a delayed flight, ROAM Fitness can save the day by allowing you to get in a quick sweat and a nice shower.
ROAM Fitness is expanding to San Francisco International Airport next. From there, the company has large goals to make these airport gyms a commodity across the country. For more information on ROAM Fitness, check out their website at roamfitness.com.

President of Echelon Fitness, Lou Lentine, loved the vibe and diversity of Miami when he was looking for a new location. It also opens up new opportunities for local fitness instructors.
"This gives teachers in Miami the ability to teach at a larger stage," said Lentine. "There is not another brand doing what we do in Miami."
With two classrooms at their new Florida location, Echelon will soon be adding a variety of new class formats to their schedule, including yoga, pilates, boot camp, HIIT training, and meditation. These classes will stream live on their Reflect Mirror, a touchscreen smart mirror that brings live personal training experiences into the home. All classes are designed for all fitness levels.
Lentine believes the expanding repertoire of classes is what makes Echelon unique. They do not just offer cycling classes.
"When someone joins our studio, they get a variety of boutique classes under one roof," said Lentine.
For local residents, this new studio has locker rooms with charging stations, showers and towel service, hair and makeup stations, and retail where consumers can stock up on fitness gear and invest in home-based products like the Connect Bike or the Reflect Mirror.
In the coming months, Echelon Fitness will also be adding a smart rower and treadmill to their collection of products, and treadmill classes will also be filmed in Miami.
Unlike many boutique fitness studios, classes will be running all day, with different class lengths and a variety of times, making it really convenient to stop in for a class. For local residents, stop in for your first class free and try out your first month for only 99 cents. Echelon also has a Founding Member discounted rate of $99 per month for unlimited classes in the studio. This limited-time rate includes access to their on-demand library from home. Drop-in rates and class packs are also available.

The first-ever, free-standing rowing studio in Florida has opened in West Boca Raton. CITYROW had its official grand opening on February 8th.
With so many new fitness concepts emerging, it's almost impossible to keep up with the latest trends. However, one that is quickly making waves is interactive indoor rowing.
What once was the lone, obscure, and least popular exercise equipment collecting dust in the dark corner of the gym, a new, innovative, and more advanced rowing machine has made landfall to take its place.
These water resistance row machines consist of a large water tank located in front of the machine and with every stroke, you feel the realistic sensation of pushing through the water, ultimately giving you a tougher workout. The benefits to this low-impact, aerobic workout include increased endurance, toned upper and lower body muscles, stronger core, better posture, and enhanced metabolism and energy. In other words, you burn a lot of calories while building strength!
The first-ever, free-standing rowing studio in Florida has opened in West Boca Raton. CITYROW had its official grand opening on February 8th. The studio's owner, Dan Root was present for the ribbon-cutting. Root and his wife relocated from Indiana to Fort Lauderdale two years ago. After many years in the automotive industry, Root, an exercise enthusiast and avid runner, wanted to open a business that centered around his passion for fitness.
Root learned about CITYROW when watching The Today Show one morning. He discovered the show's staff were members of CITYROW in Manhattan. He decided to make the trip to New York City to take a class and was immediately hooked. After many months of planning, Root was the first to open a location in Florida. Root also plans to open a CITYROW in Fort Lauderdale within the coming year.
I also had the opportunity to meet and briefly interview CITYROW’s founder and CEO, Helaine Knapp, who was also present at the ribbon-cutting. I asked Knapp, who was in the software business prior to starting CITYROW, how she came up with the idea of opening her own club and franchise.
"I was a consumer of boutique fitness and after suffering an exercise-related injury, I needed a low-impact workout but also craved high-intensity and an experience that would change my body," explained Knapp.
So, in 2014 the first CITYROW opened in Manhattan. “We partnered with WaterRower to design an exclusively branded CITYROW Rower," said Knapp. "The black-stained, wood version rower features a custom-built Bluetooth monitor that includes data specific to CITYROW’s programming."
The 50-minute class I participated in consisted of approximately 15 people and the instructor. This blended class incorporated both timed rowing intervals as well as mat work with light to medium weights. You slowly work your way up to a faster, more intense workout on the rowing machine while maintaining the required pace rate.
Although it feels as if you are working as a team when rowing, the goal is actually achieving your individual best in meter distance. I have to say though, I often found myself trying to keep up and staying in sync with other rowers which maintained my motivation throughout the more intense parts of the workout.
This is definitely a full-body workout that utilizes every muscle and core strength to achieve the best results. Despite eating a full breakfast prior to taking the class, I found myself ravenous following due to the number of calories I burned. I highly recommend taking their free class so you can see for yourself.

Santuario in Miami wants to be a space that takes yoga to the next level, all the while making it feel like a getaway for people as they take their class.
Santuario, or sanctuary, is defined as “refuge, haven, harbor, oasis, shelter, retreat, hideaway.” Step into Santuario Miami Yoga, a bohemian, good vibes only yoga studio that guarantees you will feel relaxed and allow you to escape reality both body and soul as soon as you walk inside. Lola, the friendliest Boston Terrier and Santuario’s mascot, sits at the front of the door to welcome you in, immediately putting a smile on your face.
Jenny Sanchez, owner of Santuario, has been teaching yoga for about a decade. Having past experience owning a big yoga studio, she decided two and a half years ago to open a more intimate space designed for yoga that would create a community where people could come together and disconnect from the outside world. Growing her small space into something more than just a yoga studio has always been her goal.
"People don’t just come here to do yoga, they come here to see their friends," says Sanchez.
The island tunes, live plants hanging on the wall, outdoor shower, and a hangout patio give all of the laid-back feels one is looking for when coming to Santuario. It does not only make people want to join in on a class but also stick around before or after and hang out with others.
The studio also hosts a lot of events, such as BBQs in the patio and potluck dinners after yoga, giving people a chance to meet and get to know each other. Along with those events the studio hosts meditation and yoga workshops, and twice a year Jenny offers a retreat in Patagonia, Argentina. It is definitely a social space trying to bring the community together.
Sanchez adds, "The space is filled with tons of love and laughter! And lots of Bob Marley."
From advanced to beginner yogis, everyone is welcome to try any of the classes and be sure to succeed by the end of it. Whether you are just not feeling it and you just want to sweat and get a good stretch in, or when you need a hard workout and feel good about it both physically and mentally, Santuario has you covered. Elev8 gives their own twist on a conventional Pilates class by using a variety of different machines. Check them out today in Coral Gables, Miami.
Elev8 gives their own twist on a conventional Pilates class by using a variety of different machines. The result is that you will feel the burn while remaining entertained.
Among the different machines are the reformer, tower, and their own machine, an encompass. During a class, you’ll be moving from one side of the studio to the next, using these machines in sections and with props, similar to how you would in any other cross-training session. All of the machines are implemented to target those tiny muscle groups to help deliver benefits regardless of your goals, whether they be general wellness, maintenance, or injury prevention. The result is a high energy class for those looking for a more intense workout.
Founder Simon Silva has 20 years of classic dance experience. He explains that when he was injured, Pilates became his rehabilitation. Having later recovered, Pilates became his cross-training to avoid any future injury.
“It is an easy transition from dance to Pilates," says Silva. "It’s dance, but laying down and with springs."
With a playlist that will have you smiling, Silva and his warm staff will remain at a safe distance to guide you from one move to the next should you find yourself frozen in place after hearing your instructions.
"I worked as a full-time Pilates instructor in various studios before having my own,” states Silva. This allowed him the experience to know what works and what doesn’t.
Although you may have tried Pilates before, each studio can vary greatly in exactly what equipment is used and how. Silva has condensed all of the best for your workout with one common thread - all movements are about slow and strong control. This makes it easy to catch on and jump into the zone.
And what a sweet zone it is! Located on Ponce de Leon, this location is exactly what would come to mind when you think 'boutique studio'. You’ll want to arrive with time to spare for parking, which is metered, and traffic, which we know all too well is always a factor. Once inside, staff will orient you as to where you can drop your things and how to set up for your workout. From there, let the gorgeous space, the equipment, and props at Elev8 motivate you in keeping all your wellness goals in 2020!
